Fū’s Background

Fū was a gifted young child among various children from Konohagakure. He was selected and recruited by Danzō personally to join the Root, which upset Inoichi Yamanaka. He was trained directly under Danzō’s supervision. Later, after being well-adjusted to the regulations of Root, he was teamed up with the freshly recruited Torune, whom he instructed about the workings of Root, and eventually they became close friends with each other.

Five Kage Summit

Fū and Torune were chosen by Danzō to escort him to the Kage Summit in the Land of Iron. During their journey, they were ambushed by the Prajñā Group, where Fū and Torune held back upon Danzō’s orders as their leader wanted to perform his skills. After they arrived and the meeting commenced, Fū and his partner rose up to Danzō’s defense during the Fourth Raikage’s outburst and Zetsu’s successive appearance.

After Zetsu informed them about Sasuke’s presence in the Land of Iron, Fū and Torune attempted to rush and eliminate him, but were stopped by Danzō, as he was put under surveillance since he tried to control Mifune. Later, Fū alerted Danzō when Sasuke’s sensor located them, and they subsequently fled with Danzō upon Sasuke’s appearance before them. Ao immediately pursued them.

Danzō ordered Fū to stop Ao, and either retrieve or destroy the Byakugan he possessed. Fū left several traps, including a ragged doll that attacked Ao, which forced him to retaliate. This activated the curse and Ao got trapped in the puppet, and Fū took control of Ao’s body. As he attempted to remove the Byakugan, Ao’s seal decals were activated and covered his eye. After attempting to remove the tags with a kunai, he sensed Chōjūrō and Fifth Mizukage approaching him, and he immediately bound Ao’s hands and tied a kama to a tree branch, and told Ao that he was going to simply take his head. He then jumped towards the kama, but the Mizukage arrived in time to catch him.

Acting as Ao, Fū explained that his body was being controlled, but apologized to her and Chōjūrō for causing them any worry and asked the Mizukage to untie his hands. The Mizukage was preparing to do so while also offering to remove the seal of the Byakugan, to which Fū consented, as he intended to destroy Ao’s eyes as soon as his hands got free. However, the Mizukage didn’t untie his hands, and asked Chōjūrō to lend her the Hiramekarei, as she explained that the real Ao would never apologize to Chōjūrō, and that Ao was fully aware of the fact that even she wasn’t able to remove the seal over his eye. He then insulted the Mizukage for seeing through his deception before leaving Ao’s body.

Returning to his body, Fū apologized for his mission’s failure. Soon, Tobi ambushed them as they approached the Samurai Bridge. While Danzō prepares for battle, Fū and Torune distract Tobi long enough for him to undo his Sealing Arm Braces. While Torune is attacking Tobi, Fū slipped behind him and attempted to use the Mind Body Switch Technique on him, but failed because Tobi phased through a pillar.

Tobi emerged suddenly behind Fū, who responded fast and slashed at him with his tantō, only for the assault to phase through Tobi. Tobi grabbed and tried to strike him, but Torune threw a kunai at him, prompting Tobi to let go of Fū and become intangible. Fū attempted to entice Tobi into assaulting him so that Torune could infect him with his rinkaichū. Tobi pretended to counter-attack as Fū assaulted him but slipped past him. Torune then ran to hit Tobi, but Tobi went intangible as part of his plan, leading Torune to hit Fū instead. Torune retrieved the bugs and cured Fū while clutching his arm in pain. Tobi swiftly took both of them to another dimension before they could continue fighting.

Fourth Shinobi World War

Tobi insisted that Kabuto Yakushi display the Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation technique to relieve some of his concerns about Kabuto Yakushi’s motivations. Tobi, however, freed the captive Fū and Torune since he lacked the requisite sacrifices. Torune was killed both mentally and physically by Tobi, who subsequently commanded that Fū be used to reincarnate the former. Obliging, Kabuto began the ritual, while Fū remained still in the ritual’s seal. He shouted out as smoke and dirt began to encircle him, before his body and soil were replaced by those of Torune.

Fū’s Personality

Similar to other members of the Root, Fū lacks personality as a result of the grueling training regime Danzō subjected him to at an early age. As such, he serves only as a tool to carry out Danzō’s orders. The only distinguishing feature that he and the other members have displayed is strong commitment to Danzō. As a result, while occupying Ao’s body, he didn’t hesitate to take out his own eye, calling it a “small price to pay”, and he faced Tobi alongside Torune without fear or losing his temper. Despite Root’s teachings, Fū truly regarded Torune as a trustworthy buddy.

Fū’s Appearance

Fū initially appeared as a typical Konoha Anbu, complete with a white cloak and mask. When he removed the mask, he revealed himself to be a young man with auburn hair and amber eyes. He donned a short, black jacket with red straps on the shoulders, as do all Root members, which indicates his commitment to the organization. He also wore a red short kimono with a black sash under the jacket, black gloves, dark-coloured pants, and normal shinobi sandals.

He wore a light brown short kimono with a black sash, gray leggings, and shinobi sandals as a child in Root. He was also wearing black bracelets.

Fū’s Abilities

Danzō claimed that he and Torune were two of Root’s most skilled shinobi. Fū was an astute sensor, detecting that he, Torune and Danzō were still being chased by Ao. He could instantaneously detect when Tobi appeared behind him and react accordingly. As a child, he proved to be skilled in taijutsu, able to skillfully deflect a young Torune’s attacks without getting infected by his rinkaichū. As an Anbu, he was also skilled in kenjutsu, brandishing a tantō for fast slashes.

Ninjutsu

Yamanaka Clan Techniques

Fū was knowledgeable in the many skills of the Yamanaka clan. Aside from using the clan’s Mind Body Switch Technique, he could use his trap-making talents to use a cursed seal variation that allows him to transfer his consciousness into a scarecrow-like puppet with kama and kuwa for limbs that he can then freely use to attack his target. When the puppet receives or deals damage to the opponent, the cursed seal is activated, transferring the user’s consciousness into the opponent’s mind, while the latter’s is transferred into the now-immobile puppet.
