Hyūga Hizashi was a Konohagakure Jōnin, who belonged to the Hyūga clan. He is Neji Hyūga’s father, and younger twin brother of Hiashi Hyūga.
He was a member of the Hyūga branch house, who sacrificed himself in order to protect the main branch family and pride of the Hyūga Clan. Hizashi’s death had a great effect on his older twin brother Hiashi, who became rigid and disillusioned into believing that strength is the only necessity to survive.
Hizashi’s death prevented a conflict between Konohagakure and Kumogakure but the relations between two villages remained tense for the rest of their lives. The circumstances behind Hizashi’s death are well-known to Konoha’s high-ranking shinobi, the majority of whom view Kumogakure’s actions as a significant transgression.
Nonetheless, Konoha has attempted to use the entire incident to force cooperation from Kumogakure, which emphasizes the fact that Kumo owed Konoha a great amount of debt. Neji was unaware about the truth behind his father’s death. He only came to know about it from Hiashi, after his defeat in the Chūnin Exams.
Naruto’s words and the truth about Hizashi’s death transformed Neji drastically, and he decided to write his own fate, as he died similarly shielding Hinata and Naruto during the Fourth Shinobi World War, and thought about the freedom his father must have felt in such a moment.

Hizashi was born just a few seconds after his twin brother Hiashi. Hiashi was chosen the successor to the Hyūga clan solely for this reason, whereas Hizashi was made a member of the branch house. He was branded with a curse seal to ensure his lifelong duty to the main branch family.
Hizashi eventually had a son named Neji. Hinata, Hiashi’s daughter, turned three years after Neji was born. Neji was granted his own curse seal, as was traditional on the third birthday of the next heir. Hizashi was angry that his son was sentenced to the same destiny as him, and he put up with it for a time. But, as time passed, Hizashi recognised Neji’s natural talent with the Hyūga clan’s skills.
At the same time, Hinata was proving to be unfit to be Hyūga’s future leader. Hizashi became increasingly open with his disapproval of the main house, eventually manifesting as deadly intent, after becoming enraged that Neji was being denied his full potential due to his birth. Hiashi, sensing this, activated Hizashi’s curse seal as punishment, bringing immense pain to Hizashi and giving Neji reason to mistrust the main house for the first time.
Hiashi later assassinated the Head Ninja of Kumogakure to save Hinata in an event that became known as the Hyūga Affair. Kumogakure requested Hiashi’s body as preparation; in actuality, they wanted the Byakugan’s secrets. Hizashi was recommended as Hiashi’s body double by the Hyūga elders and Konoha’s leadership.
In addition to safeguarding Hiashi, the head of the Hyūga, and the Byakugan’s secrets from being revealed; Hizashi consented. He immobilized Hiashi with a single hit when he tried to complain. He then revealed that he was not doing this to protect Hyūga’s structure, but to save his brother’s life, prevent war, and for the first time in his life, chose his own fate. Before dying, Hizashi urged Hiashi to inform Neji of his decision, regretting that he had only shown Neji his bitterness in life.
In preparation for the Fourth Shinobi World War, Hizashi was revived by Kabuto Yakushi to fight against the Allied Shinobi Forces, before being mobilized with Asuma Sarutobi and Dan Katō, where he questioned why this was occurring when Dan informed him of their current situation.
Relocated to the shore of the Land of Lightning, Hizashi emerged from the sea with the others, before attacking the opposing First Division when he made landfall. When confronted by his brother, he apologized to Hiashi for posing as an enemy in front of him, despite the branch house’s duty to defend those of the main house.
Hizashi remarked that this was simply the fate forces in him as a branch member, lamenting that it was penance for his rebellion and that it even negated his wish to die for the sake of the clan and community. Hiashi, on the other hand, denied this and said that Neji and Hinata were now fighting together on the battlefield as comrades supporting one another, not just to preserve the clan’s bloodline. After finishing their conversation, the two proceeded to battle.
While they were battling, Hizashi was startled to see Chōji’s butterfly wings overshadowing the battlefield, before being halted by the latter’s colossal fist. When Chōji fled to stop the rampage of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, the other shinobi were left to deal with Hizashi.
Hizashi’s soul was freed along with the other reanimated shinobi after the Impure World Reincarnation technique was canceled.
Hizashi firmly believed in the Will of Fire. Despite his bitterness for the Hyūga’s main house, which he regrets exposing his son, Neji to, he remained loyal to his clan and was willing to sacrifice his own life to protect the secrets of his clan’s kekkei genkai and save his brother’s life.
Hizashi was a mirror copy of his brother Hiashi except for the fact that he had been branded with the Hyūga Main Family’s Juinjutsu on his forehead. He had long, black hair and featureless, white eyes, which he shared with the rest of his clan. Throughout his life, he was spotted sporting a variety of clothing.
While on duty, he wore a long-sleeved, loose-fitting kimono held closed by an object, which appeared to be the clan’s standard clothing. He wore a plain black uniform with mesh armor underneath, a black forehead protector, and an obi around his waist while on duty. After assuming his brother’s identity, he dressed similar to him and wore a basic white kimono with a dark-coloured belt and a brown, long-sleeved haori.
Very little was shown about Hizashi’s overall abilities, yet he appeared to be a skilled shinobi. According to his son Neji, Hizashi’s strength was comparable to that of his twin brother Hiashi. His skill and fame were also such that Kabuto Yakushi chose to reincarnate him during the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Being born into the Hyūga clan, Hizashi was born with the Byakugan which gave him near 360 degree x-ray vision (with the exception of a little blind patch at the upper thoracic vertebrae) and the capacity to perceive the chakra pathway system.
Hizashi, like other members of the Hyūga clan, excelled in chakra regulation and the conventional Gentle Fist fighting style, and was even proficient enough to fully immobilize his brother with a single stroke. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Hizashi and his brother were shown to be evenly matched, with neither obtaining the upper hand. He was also noted to be stronger than his older brother.
He also demonstrated the usage of techniques from the Gentle Fist Art that were only available to members of the main house, such as the Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven — repelling many opponent attacks with the normally exclusive skill.
