Lady Tsunade allows Naruto to go on a mission to find out about Menma's Memory in the Land of Rice with Neji and Tenten. Nan and a few other villagers mistake Naruto, Tenten, Neji, and Menma for members of a band of bandits that have been terrorizing their town when they first arrive in their hamlet.
He instructs the shinobi to hurry and leave if they have no business being there after they have established their identities. Nan tells his sister Ran not to worry about such things since there is no such thing as a nice shinobi and then shows them the sea of graves before telling them to leave the village after she asks them to get rid of the shinobi who are harassing them and their community.
He addressed Naruto and Menma again, saying that he urged them to go while they worked to construct a defensive front for the village. However, they were adamant about aiding the community in any way possible, but they turned it down.
