The information of Riichi's past is somewhat mysterious and very little is known about his upbringing or his skills. In the anime, he only made a few brief appearances. However, during the attack of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox on Konoha, Riichi, along with Fugaku Uchiha, was seen evacuating citizens to the southeast shelter.
Riichi made his debut in the anime in the Chunin Exams Arc. In the arc, he first appeared during the final round of the Chunin Exams and was introduced as one of the ninjas guarding the East Gate. He was complaining to his partner that he did not want to be there guarding the gate and wanted to watch the Chunin Exams’ final round. That’s when they noticed smoke coming out of the woods nearby.
Riichi then appeared in the Akatsuki Suppression Mission. He was a member of Niju Shotai (Twenty Platoons in English) who were tasked to investigate the mercenary group known as Akatsuki. His squad was dispatched to one of the Akatsuki's hideouts, which they had already infiltrated. Nevertheless, their research was fruitless because none of the S-rank criminals ever showed up.
Later, Riichi appeared in Pain’s Assault Arc in Naruto Shippuden. In the anime, Riichi was one of the ninjas guarding Konoha’s borders, stationed outside the wall of the village, along with Tsuzumi Sarugaku and other fellow ninjas. When the Six Paths of Pain and Konan infiltrated Konoha, they eliminated Riichi’s squad. Later, Riichi and the rest of the squad were brought back to life by Nagato Uzumaki’s Outer Path — Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique.
In the Past Arc: The Locus of Konoha, during a flashback, it was revealed that he was once captured by a shinobi from the Jomae Village. He was later rescued in a hostage exchange for Hanare, a kunoichi, a spy from Jomae Village.
Riichi has not appeared since this incident; thus, his absence makes it impossible to say whether he is dead or alive. He is currently assumed to be alive and well unless any information comes to light indicating otherwise.
Riichi is described as a cheerful guy who often has a smile on his face. He also likes to do what he enjoys instead of work, which is something he often complains about to others.
Riichi has small, black eyes, thin eyebrows, and shoulder-length brown hair. He is dressed in the typical Konoha shinobi clothing, including a flak jacket, dark-blue underclothes, a Konoha head protector, and standard shinobi sandals.
Details concerning Riichi's abilities are still unknown because of his sparse appearance in the series. However, it is stated that Riichi is a skilled jonin of the Konoha, which speaks for his capabilities as a shinobi.
Riichi is also a playable character in Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Blazing.
In Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Blazing, his rank is stated to be of a chunin.
