Substitution Jutsu is a type of Jutsu where the user guards themselves against a harmful attack by switching their body with another object.
This Jutsu allows people to switch targets with other objects, usually a wooden log. It activates the moment the attack lands on the user, but requires perfect timing to cast it. It is also seen as being used as a weapon by attaching paper bombs to the log as well.
This technique can only be used on attacks that intend on harming the caster. Kakashi tells the trio to come at him to hurt him during the bell test, and when Naruto uses all his strength to attack, he is able to switch with a clone of Naruto himself. He also easily dodges Sasuke’s Shuriken this way.

Substitution Jutsu is a basic Ninjutsu that almost every Ninja knows. Its origins are unknown and its first usage is seen all the way back in the third episode of the Naruto series. Kakashi Hatake is seen to be able to easily dodge many attacks cast on him by Team 7.
Although it is a basic E-Rank Jutsu, using it efficiently requires an incredibly high amount of skill. Only a few shinobi are seen to be able to use it efficiently. This Jutsu is derived from the Body Flicker Jutsu, which helps Shinobi go from one place to another by applying chakra, making it seem like they were teleporting.
This Jutsu does not work against attacks which do not intend to harm you. One of the examples of this that is seen in the anime is in the fight between Jiraiya and Pain. When Jiraiya uses his Wild Iron’s Mane against Pain, he is easily able to substitute. But when Jiraiya goes with the intention to capture, it is easily doable thanks to its non-threatening nature.
Although Substitution Jutsu is a very common Jutsu, not many people put it to use. Sometimes it is used to escape, sometimes to attack. Difference in use can determine the way this Jutsu works. It can be used to create an opening for an attack, or to escape from a deadly situation.
Team 7 is on a mission to escort a villager, but is ambushed by Mist Ninja. All hope is lost when they capture and kill Kakashi. Sasuke protects the villager even with the cost of his life, but Kakashi comes to rescue thanks to Substitution Jutsu.
After Sasuke almost gets overwhelmed by Killer B, he finally somehow takes him down and brings him to the Akatsuki. However, all they received was a Substitution Jutsu. This not only causes a disparity between Sasuke and Obito, but also lets him escape. It also leads to the Five Kage Summit, which would be the reason for all the Shinobi becoming allies.
Sasuke uses his Shuriken Jutsu on Kakashi and to everyone’s surprise, although it was brutal. However, Kakashi uses this as an opportunity to determine where Sasuke is by escaping with a Substitution Jutsu.
Naruto finally gets an opportunity to prove himself to his peers by sneaking up on Kakashi using his highly advanced Shadow Clone Jutsu. Just when Kakashi was going to get hit at full force by Naruto, he only hit himself.
Obito and Kakashi duel and he thinks that he is finally able to defeat Kakashi. However, in the final moment when he was about to land the finishing blow, Kakashi uses the Substitution Jutsu to get behind Obito and finish the match.
A. Substitution Jutsu works by replacing yourself with a nearby object, usually a log of wood. Due to the attack hitting something, it creates the illusion of the attack actually hitting the user.
A. All ninjas who have Chakra are able to use the Substitution Jutsu. It is only a matter of being able to execute it well. Although Naruto can use the Substitution Jutsu, he is not seen executing it much in the anime.
A. Rock Lee is an exception to the usual Substitution Jutsu due to him not having any chakra at all. Although he can’t use it the traditional way, it is still possible for him to compensate with speed.
