Itachi joined Team 2, a Hidden Leaf genin squad, after graduating from the Ninja Academy. Itachi Uchiha, Tenma Izumo, and Shinko Inari made up Team 2, which was captained by Yuki Minazuki.

In their first year, Team 2 had earned a name for themselves. They were tasked with accompanying the Feudal Lord of the Land of Fire on his regular visits to Hidden Leaf. During this mission, they were ambushed and had to endure enemy attacks. Tenma is slain by a masked man, later revealed to be Obito Uchiha, during this assignment.

After Tenma's death, Shinko withdraws from the shinobi life while Itachi's Sharingan was awakened as a result of this incident. After being promoted to Chunin, Itachi quit Team 2.

Catch the Ninja Cat

In the anime, Team 2 was assigned to track a certain ninneko (ninja cat). They were dispatched to the Sky District for this assignment and the Sky District is a seemingly abandoned city where the Uchiha Clan stores their weaponry. Nekobaa is in charge of the Uchiha Clan’s weaponry and the ninja cat in question possesses whiskers with unique quality. Its whiskers were required for the production of special medicine. Genin of the squad were finding it hard to get a hold of the ninja cat as it was quite agile. After multiple embarrassing failures, Itachi manages to catch the ninja cat in the end.

Feudal Lord’s Escort

Impressed with their success rate within their first year as a genin squad, Team 2 was assigned to the honorable task of escorting the Fire Daimyo (Feudal Lord of the Land of Fire) during one of his annual visits to the Hidden Leaf Village. During this mission, they were ambushed by a masked man (Obito Uchiha). Team 2 stood their ground and confronted the enemy in order to protect the Fire Daimyo. During this conflict, Tenma lost his life at the hands of Obito. The death of Tenma shook Shinko to her core and she decided to quit the life of a shinobi. Losing his comrade and his friend, Itachi was filled with sorrow which resulted in the awakening of his Sharingan.
