Dojutsu, also known as Visual Prowess, are abilities that reside in and utilise the user's eyes as a medium. Dojutsu manifests mainly in the members of a specific clan; for instance, The Hyuga Clan possesses The Byakugan, and The Uchiha Clan possesses The Sharingan. When the Dojutsu is overused, the user is prevented from using it for a while.
It is possible to acquire Dojutsu by transplanting the eyes, but that comes with a catch. If the Dojutsu is acquired by this means, then its use and prowess are limited, and it takes a toll on the user’s body if he does not have a genetic susceptibility for it. It also consumes a lot of the user’s chakra and may lead to death if overused.
The history of Dojutsu can be traced back to the Ancestral Times when Kaguya Otsutsuki arrived on Earth. Kaguya possessed the Byakugan and manifested the Rinne Sharingan after she consumed the Chakra Fruit from the God Tree.
Hagoromo Otsutsuki, son of Kaguya Otsutsuki, inherited her strong chakra. In the anime, he is the first to awaken the Sharingan after he sees the corpse of Haori, his love interest, by the God Tree. The Sharingan is a derived form of the Rinne Sharingan.
When Hagoromo confronts his mother, Kaguya makes him fight his brother, HamuraOtsutsuki. His Dojutsu progresses to Rinnegan when he nearly kills his brother and sets him free from his mother’s control. He then heals his brother and they fight side by side, sealing Kaguya in the end.
The descendants of Hamura, the Hyuga Clan, inherited Byakugan. Hagoromo then had two sons, Indra and AshuraOtsutsuki. They inherited different aspects of their father’s prowess. Indra inherited his strong chakra and mental strength, along with his Dojutsu. Ashura inherited his life force and his physical prowess. The descendants of Ashura became known as the Senju Clan, and the descendants of Indra Otsutsuki inherited Sharingan and became known as the Uchiha Clan. It is said that one who acquires both Senju and Uchiha Chakra can manifest the Rinnegan. Madara Uchiha became the second individual after Hagoromo to awaken Rinnegan during his lifetime, after he implanted HashiramaSenju’s cells in his body.
Byakugan is the Kekkei Genkai of The Hyuga Clan. Its origins tie back to the Otsutsuki Clan. With the use of Byakugan, the user can see through objects or living beings and see the Chakra Points and Chakra Flow in someone's body. The user is capable of clearly seeing at a distance of miles, depending on the user. It provides the user with almost 360-degree vision.
The Sharingan is manifested by selective members of the Uchiha Clan. It is one of the Three Great Dojutsu. Its powers originated from Kaguya Otsutsuki’s Rinne Sharingan. Hagoromo Otsutsuki was the first to manifest in the anime.
The Mangekyo Sharingan is the evolved form of Sharingan. Only a few members of the Uchiha Clan have had the privilege of activating it. These eyes are renowned as The Heavenly Eyes, which are capable of seeing the truth behind all of creation. Its appearance differs with different users.
The Rinnegan is a Dojutsu that is renowned as the highest rank Dojutsu among the Three Great Dojutsu. It is said that the one who wields the Rinnnegan will either save the world or become the very reason for its destruction, in times of chaos and disorder.
Rinne Sharingan is a Kekkei Mora Dojutsu. It is the predecessor of the famous Dojutsu, Sharingan, and Rinnegan. In the series, it was first manifested by Kaguya of the Otsutsuki clan after she had consumed the Chakra Fruit of the God Tree.
