Asuma Sarutobi was the son of the Third Hokage and the leader of Team 10 that composed of him, Shikamaru Nara, Choji Akimichi and Ino Yamanaka. An exceptionally skilled jonin who fought with a unique combination of special knuckled trench knives and Taijutsu, he was one of the many adult figures introduced in Naruto early on. However, even a shinobi as skilled as him can meet his match.
The organization of rogue ninja known as Akatsuki contains some of the most powerful shinobi to walk the land, and as standard operating procedure they tend to work in pairs. One of their newest pair of members were a pair nicknamed the 'Zombie Pair' due to their sheer difficultly to kill thanks to their unique abilities. Their names were Hidan and Kakuzu, and despite being partners they hate each others guts. Asuma and Team 10 would be dispatched in order to ambush the pair in the middle of a bounty hunting excursion. However, things would take a dramatic turn for the worst.
Hidan would be revealed to be a disciple of the cult like faith of Jashin, and through taboo experimentation had become functionally immortal. He would be run through by various weaponry and even decapitated by Asuma himself, yet not only would he survive these attacks, it would seemingly completely unfaze him.
Upon securing some of Asuma’s blood, thanks to his signature weapon in his triple bladed scythe, the full extent of his horrible power would be revealed. Using himself as a sort of makeshift voodoo doll, Hidan could sync his body with whoever’s blood he consumed, taking on a skeleton-esque appearance and causing any damage inflicted upon his body to be mirrored upon his chosen victim. At the climax of this battle, Hidan manages to plunge his scythe through his own heart, instantly killing Asuma.

Hidan was a child born in Yugakure- the Village Hidden in the Hot Springs. One day, he would venture into a place known as the Valley of Hell, where the smell of rotting corpses and sulphur permeated the area. Hidan would be suspected of being the one to cause this mass death by his fellow villagers, which would only push him closer towards villainy. The land of Yugakure was a land that was slowly transitioning away from the world of Shinobi into a noted tourist destination known across the land. Hidan despised this development as he believed that the way of Shinobi was one of constant conflict and death, and in a fit of rage slaughtered many of his fellow villagers before leaving and becoming a rogue ninja
Shortly after leaving Yugakure, Hidan would encounter the faith of Jashin. Entranced by its absolute teaching of slaughter, he fully devoted himself to the belief and after series of rituals and experiments, Hidan would achieve immortality. The village of Yugakure was not done with him however, as they would solicit the services of Akatsuki in order to seek justice for their slaughtered brethren. However, Hidan impressed the organisation by fending them off, even managing to destroy his future teammate Kakuzu’s heart. Konan would formally offer Hidan a place within their ranks, which he would formally accept.
Despite being a man of religious faith, Hidan was an abrasive personality with a foul mouth, and was constantly at odds with others within the organisation. No one found him more annoying than Kakuzu, the same man he had wounded in his initial meeting with the Akatsuki. Ironically, this made them the best possible partners for each other.
With both being functionally immortal, they could constantly fight and harm each other with no real meaningful drawbacks. They would come to be known as the “Zombie Pair”, a duo of undying shinobi who seemed virtually invincible. They would successfully capture the Two Tails Jinchuriki, and manage to slay even the hardiest of Shinobi, such as Asuma Sarutobi.
It would take Shikamaru’s brilliant tactics, where he lured Hidan into a trap before blowing his body to smithereens and then trapped him in a hole filled with rubble. This finally incapacitated him once and for all.
Hidan’s main ability that is completely central to his character is his functional immortality. While he technically can be harmed and even dismembered, he will never truly die thanks to the blessings granted to him by Jashin. This ability works in tandem with his blood rituals he concocts by drawing a symbol of Jashin on the ground using the blood of his opponents, syncing their bodies together and mirroring any damage done to himself onto them.
Since Hidan cannot die from these injuries, it is a surefire way for him to quickly kill his opponents. Hidan’s main weapon is his massive three bladed scythe attached to an extremely long chain and metal pole that he uses with deadly precision and grace. He is capable of pinpoint accuracy in throwing it around the battlefield, and uses it in order to draw the blood from his foes necessary in order to complete his Jashinist rituals. Even a single cut is enough for him to perform the ritual.
Hidan also possesses an incredible amount of agility and stamina. He was capable of dodging nearly all of Asuma’s blows as a Taijutsu expert and needed the assistance of Shikamaru’s shadow binding jutsu to even land hits. It is also what allows him to wield his signature scythe with such precision and ease.
Relative to the rest of the Akatsuki, Hidan’s amount of special abilities actually isn’t as large as you would expect. He is very straightforward in his fighting style, draw blood using his giant scythe and exceptional Taijutsu skills in order to conduct his blood rituals to incapacitate and kill his opponents. Given how efficient and effective these methods are, he has no real need to expand his skillset, at least that is his belief.

"Every damn time… That's not something you say to me… If they can kill me, I couldn't be happier. Although… I don't think they can!
"Hell that hurts… You go and stab me all over… Damn both of you… Divine judgement awaits heathens ignorant to the pain of others."
"Yeah hurts good doesn't it? Attacking the vitals is such a waste! This pain, this is the best! As the other dies, their agony radiates through my body! And living through it feels even better!"
"I'll never die… Even if you destroy my body, and I'm left with nothing but my head… I'll escape somehow… and when I do, I'll find you and bite your throat out!"
As one who is physically immortal, Hidan’s fights tend to be pretty straightforward. He knows his win condition in gathering his opponents blood to use his Jashinist rituals to slay them, although he certainly likes to take his time to torture and torment his foes. As the Akatsuki tend to travel in pairs, Hidan is not commonly found without his zombie partner in crime Kakazu in his battles.

A. Even as a child, Hidan always had an unusual fascination with death, as displayed by his curiosity of the Valley of Hell during his youth. He was a firm believer in the order of the shinobi world at the time, a state of constant war and death. The faith of Jashin was a tailor made fit for his beliefs.
A. While buried under a tremendous amount of boulder rubble, Hidan is still very much alive due to his immortality, albeit without his body parts connected to each other he is completely incapable of escape on his own
