Gamamaru’s Background

Gamamaru witnessed Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s enslavement of the country via the Infinite Tsukuyomi over a thousand years ago. Years later, he approached Hagoromo and Hamura Ōtsutsuki, the princess’ twin sons.

He exposed the dark nature of Kaguya’s regular ritual to the God Tree to them and pressed upon them to discover the truth. The twins approached Gamamaru after discovering the people being sacrificed to the tree. He then revealed the truth about their mother’s acts and the dangers posed by the God Tree, which was constantly draining Natural Energy from the planet and depleting the supply.

The twins asked Gamamaru to teach them senjutsu as he had planned to do from the beginning. When Hagoromo completed his senjutsu training, a messenger toad arrived to alert him and Gamamaru of Hamura’s abrupt departure which they assumed to be because Kaguya had uncovered their plot.

Gamamaru returned to the village to evacuate the residents for the impending conflict and handed over a parting gift to Hagoromo: a sacred seal tag crafted over generations by the Sage Toads that could once restore someone from near death. He then watched Hagoromo battle Kaguya, only to have to fight a brainwashed Hamura.

Gamamaru watched as Hagoromo fatally wounded Hamura which resulted in the awakening of Hagoromo’s Mangekyō Sharingan and Rinnegan. Many years later, Gamamaru prophesied to Hagoromo about a “mischievous blue-eyed youngster who would reunite the tailed beasts and changing the world in the future.”

Years later, Gamamaru approached Hagoromo once more after the latter sent his two sons, Indra and Asura Ōtsutsuki, on separate journeys to determine the successor for Ninshū. He frequently met Hagoromo to discuss the latter’s goals for his boys as time passed by. While following Hagoromo’s wish not to intervene, Gamamaru would still keep an eye on the two brother’s development from afar.

Centuries later when Jiraiya was training at Mount Myōboku, the now-elder Toad Sage issued a prophecy about him. His first prophecy was that Jiraiya would become both a great ninja and an unrivalled pervert, and that he would travel the world as sage, “observing all creation, watching as nature takes its course,” while also writing a book. Gamamaru also prophesied that one day Jiraiya would have a pupil with the ability to rescue or destroy the world, and that Jiraiya’s action would influence which route this kid took.

Pain’s Assault

Years later after Jiraiya’s death, The Toad Sage used the Telescope Technique to observe Nagato and Naruto’s encounter. Jiraiya initially believed that the youngster indicated in the prophecy was Minato and then Nagato, but just before his death, he came to realize that the boy was Naruto.

Toad Sage witnessed Naruto persuade Nagato to sacrifice himself for the sake of Konoha’s inhabitants, to which he told Gamabunta that both he and Jiraiya were mistaken as the prophecy was about Naruto and Nagato. He wonders whether the Tale of the Utterly Gutsy Ninja was truly the key to altering the world.

Fourth Shinobi World War: Countdown

Before the commencement of the Fourth Shinobi World War, the Toad sage summoned Naruto to make a prediction. He predicted that Naruto would face a “monster with octopus tentacles” and a “young man with powerful eyes.” He also saw that Naruto should be given the key and thus instructed Gerotora to do so.

Gamamaru’s Personality

At his old age, Gamamaru constantly appears to be smiling and has his eyes closed or squinting. He is presented and describes as senile and occasionally out of touch with his surroundings, therefore he forgets things easily and rapidly. However, when reminded, he is still able to remember things and can simply tell things precisely.

He is also very intelligent as a sage and is quick to stop Shima and Fukasaku from bickering and encourages unity. He appears to have respect for Jiraiya, unlike most toads, and had urged Shima and Fukasaku to cooperate with him.

Gamamaru’s Appearance

Gamamaru is one of Mount Myōboku’s largest inhabitants, easily equalling Bunta, Ken and Hiro in size. He has a brown complexion, with a white tummy, and is wrinkled and squinting. He is dressed in a professor's hat with tassels and an orb on top. He also sports a necklace bearing the toad’s village emblem for “oil”.

The location where he summoned Jiraiya and Naruto to perceive their prophecy is surrounded by what appears to be huge scrolls, and he sits in a shallow pool of water with the character for “sage” imprinted on it.

Gamamaru’s Abilities

Being the eldest toad sage of Mount Myōboku, Gamamaru is very wise and has extensive knowledge who is greatly respected by his fellow toads. He is shown to be extremely long-lived, having existed since at least before the arrival of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki on Earth.

Senjutsu

Gamamaru is a powerful Senjutsu user. He had a deep understanding and control of Natural chakra even at a very young age, he could easily lift massive stone structures. His knowledge and talents were so vast that he played a critical part in assisting Hagoromo and Hamura in stopping Kaguya, having personally educated them.

Ninjutsu

He could employ Water Release to create a powerful stream of water capable of repelling a large bear through solid rock. He can also observe anyone from a wide distance if he knows the person’s chakra pattern through his crystal ball.

Divination

Gamamaru can see into the future, but only to a limited extent, as evidenced by his prediction that Jiraiya will accept a student known as either the Saviour or the Destroyer of the world. He has even placed a prophecy on Hagoromo himself, which he still believes to the present day. It is uncertain whether his ability stems from his Sage rank.
