In the anime, Hagoromo was born in the Land of Ancestors. He was the son of Kaguya Otsutsuki and Tenji, the leader of the Land of Ancestors. He also had a twin brother who was named Hamura Otsutsuki.
Kaguya was a member of the fearsome Otsutsuki Clan and had consumed the Chakra Fruit from the God Tree and possessed formidable prowess because of it. Being her son, Hagoromo inherited strong chakra from his mother and unmatched physical prowess.
Hagoromo grew up in a peaceful environment under his mother’s rule. Hagoromo and his brother were forbidden to go near the God Tree but when they deduced that people who visited it never came back, they approached the tree. After witnessing the God Tree, they came across the reality behind their mother’s rule.
Hagoromo also discovered the corpse of his love interest, Haori, who died after her life energy was sucked away by the God Tree. This trauma caused the awakening of his Sharingan.
Enraged with his mother’s methods, Hagoromo confronted her. Kaguya used her prowess to manipulate Hamura and had him fight to the death against Hagoromo. He fought his brother and landed a fatal blow after he could not find any other way to free Hamura from their mother’s influence. He awakened the legendary Dojutsu, the Rinnegan, which is the natural evolution of Sharingan caused by the trauma he felt by hurting his brother.
Hagoromo used his medical prowess to heal Hamura back to health, freeing him from Kaguya’s influence along the way. Both brothers joined forces and fought against her. Kaguya merged with the God Tree, Ten-Tails, and battled her sons to reclaim her chakra that they had inherited.
After a prolonged battle, Hagoromo and Hamura managed to seal Kaguya by performing the Six Paths: Chibaku Tensei. They extracted Ten-Tails and sealed it within Hagoromo, which led to Hagoromo becoming the first Jinchuriki of the Ten-Tails.
The Six Paths: Chibaku Tensei the brothers performed was so big that it supposedly became the moon in the Naruto World. After Kaguya was sealed, Hamura decided to migrate to the moon to protect the seal and stay close to their mother. Meanwhile, Hagoromo set out on a journey and traveled across the world to fix the damages caused by their conflict.
Hagoromo believed that the path to a peaceful era could be formed by love. He knew that his dream of a peaceful world could not be achieved in a single lifetime, so he entrusted others with his dream.
He traveled on roads and spread his ideals, known as Ninshu, and distributed chakra among his followers. Later, Ninshu gave birth to Ninjutsu, a vital asset of a shinobi, and gained Hagoromo the title of Father of All Shinobi. Soon, the practice of Ninshu gained popularity and his ideals aided their war-ridden era. Hagoromo soon became revered as the Saviour of the World.
Hagoromo soon married and had two sons, Ashura and Indra Otsutsuki. Because of a complication during pregnancy, his wife died sometime after she gave birth to their second son. Hagoromo decided to entrust his dream and legacy to his sons when he met his ultimate demise.
Indra was a prodigy who had inherited his father's mental energy along with his visual prowess while Ashura inherited his physical prowess and strong chakra but was a little clumsy and playful in nature. As they grew up, Hagoromo sent his sons on a mission to save a dying country each and elected Ashura as his successor based on their results.
Indra relied on his own strength while Ashura pursued the path of cooperation and love. Ashura would work together with others and grow stronger along with his companions and make friends everywhere he went. Following his younger son’s approach, Hagoromo divided the Ten-Tails chakra within him into nine entities with their own mind and personalities. These nine entities became known as the Tailed Beasts.
Soon after, the Nine-Tailed beasts parted ways while Hagoromo mentioned that they all were still linked with each other and in time, someone would come along the way who would bring all of them together. In the anime, the followers of Ninshu built temples in nine different locations where each tailed beast resided and lived its life and was protected from the outside world.
After he had extracted all of the Ten-Tails chakra and divided it, Hagoromo was weakened and was left incapacitated for several months. Despite his weakened state, he managed to stay alive by the husk of the Ten-Tails. At some point, Hagoromo sealed the Husk in the moon as well and was on his deathbed.
He had chosen his younger son, Ashura to be his successor, which left his elder son, Indra unsatisfied and filled with bitterness. Indra was being manipulated by Black Zetsu, the physical incarnation of Kaguya’s will, and waged war against Ashura which continued even after their natural lifespan.
In the anime, Indra approached Hogoromo on his deathbed and stated that if he fails to defeat Ashura in this lifetime, their souls will reincarnate and fight till eternity. Fearing that the reincarnation of Indra might eventually try to take Ashura’s prowess for themselves in the coming generations, he created a tablet with their history which can only be deciphered by the Rinnegan and partially interpreted by the Sharingan to guide Indra’s descendants.
The tablet was passed down through generations in the Uchiha Clan, descendants of Indra, and became known as the Uchiha Stone Tablet. Without Hagoromo’s knowledge, Black Zetsu had tampered with the tablet and manipulated the Uchiha clan members to recreate the Infinite Tsukuyomi and revive Kaguya through generations, something that he succeeded through Madara Uchiha.
Although Hagoromo had died, his consciousness stayed alive and traversed through centuries to guide the reincarnations of his sons when the time came. Centuries later, in the Fourth Great Ninja War, he approached Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, the reincarnations of Ashura and Indra, and entrusted them with his Yin and Yang Seal and Six Paths Chakra to help them defeat Madara and eventually Kaguya if she was revived.
He asked both young shinobis to share their perspective and their future goals. Even though he did not find himself fully aligned with Sasuke’s perspective, he entrusted both Naruto and Sasuke with his prowess to rectify the mistake he made with his sons when he entrusted only one of his sons with his legacy which led to this war. After the war was over, Hagoromo’s consciousness disappeared along with the souls of Kage he had summoned and returned to the afterworld.
Hagoromo was a kind-hearted individual as he always longed for a peaceful world. He never hesitated to fight for the benefit of others. Hagoromo was extremely powerful and possessed godlike abilities, but he never regarded himself as a superior being. In fact, he thought of himself as a mere escort to guide others to a peaceful world.
Hagoromo had a strong personality and sought out the benefit of others. When he found out the secret behind his mother’s peaceful rule, he did not hesitate to confront her and battle her despite knowing how powerful she was.
With the exception of the occasional immaturity that comes with adolescence, Hagoromo's personality in the anime stayed largely the same as in his youth. One instance is when he gloated over the fact that Kaguya's attempt to turn Hamura against him not only failed but also gave him the opportunity to awaken his Mangekyo Sharingan and Rinnegan.
Hagoromo had a calm and patient personality. When he met Naruto Uzumaki, he remained calm despite Naruto’s outbursts and insecurities. Although he is revered as a God in the shinobi world, Hagoromo did not hesitate to alter his dialect to suit Naruto’s vocabulary.
He had strong beliefs and opinions but he was always open to hearing out the views of others and did not force his philosophy and perspective on others and would often change his approach whenever it was deemed necessary. He was not rigid in his perspectives and would add the knowledge he gained from others to his viewpoint. Despite knowing Sasuke Uchiha’s plans for the future, he still gave him a chance and entrusted him with his prowess.
Hagoromo believed that the secret behind a peaceful world is love. He went on a journey and distributed his chakra to others and soon gained many followers. He believed that chakra would help them to connect and understand each other, which will eventually lead to a better relationship and a peaceful era.
This ideology and practice of chakra became known as Ninshu. When his son, Indra, shared his fear of chakra being used as a weapon in the foreseeable future, Hagoromo expressed that that is not in their hands and trusted the future generations with it.
Although he was renowned as the Saviour of the World, Hagoromo knew that the peaceful world he dreamed of could not be acquired in a single lifetime. He established his beliefs and entrusted the future generations to realize his dream world.
Hagoromo was a curious person who was also very open-minded. Hagoromo nonetheless gave Sasuke half of his power after learning of his radical ambitions to revolutionize the world in order to observe how things would play out differently.
In his advanced age, Hagoromo was a tall, pale-skinned guy with deep wrinkles and a prominent jawline. He had pale brown, shoulder-length hair that was spiky and braided to hang down in front of his left ear. He also had a beard that was short when he was younger and tapered down to his waist as he got older.
In the anime, Hagoromo had white eyes without pupils and two horn-like protrusions that protruded from either side of his forehead. Additionally, he had a crimson Rinnegan-like mark in the middle of his forehead that the anime referred to as his Third Eye. In the anime, this marking appeared when he first awakened his Mangekyo Sharingan and Rinnegan.
Hagoromo dressed in a white, full-length kimono with a high collar decorated with a pattern of six black magatamas; below, he wore a necklace likewise made of six black magatama. A larger, black Rinnegan mark was visible on the back of his kimono, and beneath it was a design of nine tomoes organized in three rows of three.

Hagoromo possessed a special ability unique to him, known as the Creation of All Things. With this ability, he was able to turn fantasy into reality and he was also able to create anything he desired out of thin air. This technique was based on the Yin-Yang Release and created the tailed beasts with this very ability. When he shared this technique of his with Naruto Uzumaki, he was able to create an eye for Kakashi Hatake and save Might Guy’s life, and restored his vitality.
Hagoromo also possessed the ability to create up to 10 Truth-Seeking Balls, which are made up of the Yin-Yang Release, the Six Paths Sage Chakra, and the five fundamental chakra natures. He usually formed one of the orbs into a Shakujo with two heads. The sun and moon are each represented by a ringed hoop on one end and a crescent-shaped curve on the other.
He can also create the holy sword known as the Sword of Nunoboko with this malleable chakra, which he allegedly used to mold the world. Here is a list of all the jutsu and abilities that Hagoromo possessed in the course of the manga series and its anime adaptation:
