Gerotora is a Mount Myōboku scroll toad, a rare species that closely keeps whatever secret is placed on its scroll abdomen until its contractor dies. He lives in the belly of his contractor and is well-known for his endurance.
Gerotora guarded the scroll containing the “key” to the Eight Trigrams Seal, which was located on Naruto Uzumaki’s belly. It was passed down from Minato Namikaze to Jiraiya, to hand it over to Naruto, once he became capable of controlling the Nine-Tails and its power.

Gerotora protects the scroll that serves as the “key” to the Eight Trigrams Seal, which is located on Naruto Uzumaki’s stomach. Minato Namikaze summoned him during the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox’s attack on Konoha, and engraved the key into his stomach for safekeeping. When Minato died, he handed the key to Jiraiya.
Gerotora was summoned again about two years after Naruto became a Jiraiya’s pupil. Jiraiya wanted to help Naruto have better control over the Nine-Tails power, so he ordered Gerotora to unleash a little bit of chakra, while instructing Naruto to control its demon cloak up to producing two chakra tails.
While Gerotors expressed his disapproval, Jiraiya insisted that he was ready. Much to his dismay, Gerotora did exactly as he was ordered but soon the plan backfired. The Nine-Tails used this opportunity to force out more chakra, driving Naruto into a “Version 2” form with four tails and seizing control of Naruto’s body. Jiraiya acted upon it immediately to redeem the chakra and save Naruto when Gerotora noted that he was right to be cautious about this situation.
Before he began his fight with Pain, Jiraiya summoned Gerotora to discuss the key to the seal on his abdomen which was engraved by Minato. Jiraiya wanted the scroll to get to Naruto since he was afraid he would not survive in his upcoming battle. Gerotora was furious about this decision, he angrily refused, and claimed that Naruto still wasn’t ready. This was because he believed that Jiraiya had failed to teach Naruto how to extract out the Nine-Tails’ will when he tapped into the beast’s chakra after using the key to weaken Naruto’s seal, a move that nearly killed Jiraiya in the process.
Jiraiya argued that the key’s technique was designed in a way that Minato had intended for Naruto to accomplish an unknown technique. Gerotora reluctantly agreed as Jiraiya left for his battle.
After Jiraiya’s death, Gerotora was present when Naruto was informed about the incident. He sat and listened as Fukasaku told about Pain, who was Jiraiya’s killer, and also witnessed Naruto’s outburst.
The Great Toad Sage summoned Gerotors and instructed him to deliver Naruto the key to the Eight Trigrams Seal. Gerotora noted that he does not blame Naruto for being hesitant to use the key, to which Fukasaku asked him to elaborate the details. Gerotora described the seal’s intricacies as well as the risk of releasing the Nine-Tails if Naruto's willpower wasn’t stronger than the Nine-Tails’.
Naruto revealed what had happened when the Nine-Tails took over him, and stated that he would need the Nine-Tails’ chakra to face Sasuke Uchiha, so he signed the contract. Gerotora then entered inside Naruto’s belly through his mouth, but Fukasaku had to kick him to get him down Naruto’s throat.
Gerotora appears to be a very doubtful individual, as he refused to believe that someone from the founding days of Konoha could be alive even until the term of the Fourth Hokage. He also doubted Jiraiya’s faith in Naruto that he would someday be able to control the Nine-Tails and its power, but it was only for Naruto’s safety that Gerotora was concerned about.
He is a black and orange toad with dark marks around his eyes, lips and a circular mark right below his mouth. His abdomen may stretch as a scroll toad to show a scroll, which when concealed gives him the appearance of wearing an obi.
Gerotora has an excellent endurance and someone who will safeguard the secret entrusted to him, which is engraved on his body as a scroll toad. It appears that he can also levitate.
