Gozu (Root) in Naruto

Very little is known about his childhood as Gozu’s past is still shrouded in mystery. Gozu was a member of Konoha’s Anbu unit and thus as a part of the Anbu, Gozu’s real identity is unknown. Due to his limited appearances in the series, close to nothing is known about his lineage or background other than the fact that he was one of Konoha’s finest shinobi and a member of Anbu Black Ops in the Root Faction.

Gozu first appeared in Itachi Shinden: Book of Dark Night. Gozu and his younger twin brother Mezu had their bodies surgically changed to resemble Kagen Uchiha who worked in the logistics department of the Konoha Military Police Force so they could take turns and spy on the Uchiha clan as Kagen. Gozu wore a red marking mask that resembled a monkey while he wasn't in the village pretending to be Kagen.

For many years, both reported their discoveries directly to Danzo Shimura. In the year preceding the Uchiha Clan Downfall, also known as the Uchiha Clan Massacre, they also assisted Itachi Uchiha in his efforts to prevent the clan's attempted coup. Gozu was reportedly assassinated by Itachi after the clan was annihilated so that Itachi could pose as him and approach Danzo.

Due to his lack of appearance in the series and any related information, almost nothing is known about Gozu’s personality. Judging from his Anbu status and affiliation to the Root faction, he was loyal to Danzo Shimura and would go to any lengths to achieve his goals.

Gozu is a novel-only character and does not make any appearances in the Naruto manga or anime.

Gozu was never seen unleashing his abilities in the Naruto series. Judging from his Anbu status, it is safe to say that he was a remarkable shinobi with formidable strength and remarkable abilities.
