Since Nemui’s past is still a mystery, not much is known about his early years. He was a genin of Konoha and participated in the Chunin Exams at the same time as Itachi Uchiha. Very little is known about his lineage or past due to his limited appearances in the series.
Nemui first appeared in Itachi Shinden: Book of Bright Light and the novel revealed that Nemui passed the initial rounds of the Chunin Exams with flying colors. In the final phase of exams, Nemui was paired against none other than Itachi Uchiha, the child prodigy, in the semi-final round.
Nemui was pretty agile, and his fighting style alongside his ability to battle while sleeping, gave him an edge in his battle as it made Itachi’s genjutsu ineffective against him as he was unable to cast it. Itachi was having some trouble at first; however, he finally found an opening in Nemui’s defense and was able to cast genjutsu. After becoming a target of Itachi’s genjutsu, Nemui was traumatized by the experience and was unable to continue the battle, resulting in Itachi’s victory.
Nemui has not appeared since. Therefore, it makes it close to impossible to determine his current status. For the time being, based on his prior status, he is presumed alive until any additional information comes to light suggesting otherwise.
Due to his lack of appearance in the series and any related information, almost nothing is known about Nemui’s personality. Judging from his limited appearances and actions, it can be said that Nemui is kind of lazy, sleepy-head by nature, evidenced by his nickname, Sleeping Nemui.
Nemui also showed cowardly nature after he was a subject of Itachi’s genjutsu; he was so traumatized and consumed by fear that he could not continue the fight and gave up.
Nemui is a novel-only character and does not make any visual appearances in the Naruto manga or anime.
Nemui was an exceptionally skilled genin of Konoha. Nemui's primary power is the ability to fight while sleeping. Nemui purposefully falls asleep during a battle in order to fight efficiently. When sleeping, he can fight with such skill and proficiency that Itachi has trouble keeping up with him.
He is also resistant to any jutsu that requires eye contact, including Sharingan-based genjutsu. However, Nemui's fighting style has one big flaw: he must frequently wake up to maintain awareness of the battle. During these times, opponents have an opportunity to attack, which Itachi exploited, resulting in Nemui's defeat.
