Around 40 years before the Fourth Shinobi War, Iwagakure chose Roshi to be the host of the Four-Tailed Beast. Later, he left his village to learn how to control his Tailed Beast power.
Kisame and Itachi Uchiha tracked down Roshi, but Kisame decided to fight him alone. Kisame successfully captured the Jinchuriki after a tough battle by taking advantage of Roshi's weakness in Water Release. After that, Kisame brought him to one of the hideouts of Akatsuki, where the Four-Tailed was extracted and later led to Roshni’s death.
In the Fourth Shinobi War, Roshi was reincarnated by Kabuto Yakushi to battle the Allied Shinobi Forces with the other deceased Jinchuriki. The reincarnated Jinchuriki was seen to possess a Rinnegan and Sharingan in place of their left and right eyes, respectively. Along with having a chakra receiver implanted in their body, each jinchuriki also had their unique tailed beast resealed within them.
Later, Roshi and Tobi were sent into battle when they encountered Naruto and Killer B, with Roshi leading the charge and applying pressure with his Lava Release: Scorching Stream Rock Technique. Roshi took advantage of the opportunity to attack Naruto directly when Naruto was telling him about the Rinnegan's power. Before Naruto told him any information, Roshi was able almost hit Naruto with his Lava body.
The heat continued to burn Naruto's face despite his avoidance of the attack. Still, when Roshi struck again, Naruto took the blow to destroy the chakra receiver implanted in Roshi's chest but Han kicked Naruto to avoid Naruto’s Rasengan from destroying Roshi’s chakra receiver. Roshi was later stopped by B using his sealing technique after becoming exhausted from the Eight-Tails' deadly attack. He escaped by switching into his Version 2 form before the technique was finished, and he then burned the Eight-Tails. Roshi reunited with the other reincarnated Jinchuriki and ran past them toward Naruto and B.
When Roshi fought Killer B and Naruto again, Tobi forced him into his full Four-Tails form and he attacked the Eight-Tails. Roshi grabbed one of the beast's tails, threw the two jinchuriki upward, knocking Naruto off balance, and then got ready to eat him. But despite B's efforts to hold the Four-Tailed Beast, Naruto attempts to push himself between the beast's jaws and is soon swallowed up. While Roshi resists B's attempts to free his captured buddy, Naruto secretly spoke with Son Goku. When Naruto multiplied, Roshi was forced to vomit Naruto.
When Son Goku was resealed inside the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, Roshi's body was left behind as he attempted to stop Naruto from removing the chakra receiver implanted in the beast's chest. The Eight-Tails protected Roshi's unconscious body from the next blast when a changed Naruto's Tailed Beast Ball soon clashed with the group ball created by the other tailed beasts. Later, when Naruto was alone with the other Tailed Beasts and their Jinchuriki, it was revealed that Roshi had asked his beast whether it believed that they had also chosen the wrong path in life. Then he declared that he had not forgotten the beast's name while not being considerate enough to have spoken it.
A happy Roshi asked the beast if calling it "Son" would be acceptable as the two disappeared. Roshi and the other jinchuriki were killed, and B grabbed their bodies and held them in Gyuki's tentacles when Son was resealed inside the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Roshi and the others experience a brightness as the Reanimation is released, and then their bodies begin to fall apart. Roshi's soul is sent to the afterlife.
Roshi used to show no emotion to Son Goku or to most people. Later, he said that all the Jinchuriki could have chosen the right path if they had been more like Naruto Uzumaki after watching and knowing his struggle against Tobi and Pain.
He also said that despite being Son Goku’s Jinchuriki for more than forty years, he had not softened enough to speak to the beast by its real name. He made peace with the beast by telling it that he never forgot its name before being resealed inside the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path.
He was dressed in a fitted black suit, mesh-armored shirt, long-sleeved magenta kimono top, and ankle-length sandals. He wore a brown ribbon around his waist, a brown chest plate resembling armor and a bag in the front, a brown back plate attached to the front with mesh armor, and armored collars hanging to the sides.
Roshi had red hair, a beard, and a mustache, which resembled Son Goku's body color, which is also red. His Iwagakure head protractor consists of a head guard that looks like a crown. Later, when he left the village, he removed the Head Protector and chest guard.
Roshi was one of the most powerful shinobi of Iwagakure and one of the most skilled Jinchuriki who could manifest the Four-Tailed Beast’s power. In the fight against Kisame Hoshigaki, he was able to damage the Samehada Blade. Kisame had to fight with him seriously, which he rarely does with his opponents as he is very strong.
Roshi was able to use the Lava release, which is a combination of Fire and the Earth release. He is a Kekkei Genkai user, and he can shoot Molten Rocks from his mouth. He is even able to create armor made of Lava. Roshi can also transform into Version 2 mode and use the Tailed Beast Bomb.

Roshi's headdress is described in the manga as having a golden ring on the left side. The golden ring on Roshi's headgear did not appear in the anime. This was later included in episode 256.
The name "Roshi" combines the characters for "old/elderly" and "purple." It can also refer to an "old teacher/master."
To keep the jinchuriki from turning traitor, the host is traditionally chosen from the family of the village's own Kage. It's possible that Roshi was related to one of the Tsuchikage. Because Son mentioned Onoki with some familiarity, it's likely that Roshi knew him.
A. Roshi was from Iwagakure.
A. Roshi was the host of the Four-Tailed Beast, Son Goku.
