Sage Mode in Naruto

Sage Mode is an empowered state that can be obtained by combining the natural energy with one’s chakra to form senjutsu chakra. Sage Mode allows users to tap into the natural forces of the world, which unlocks new techniques and enhances existing ones with new senjutsu chakra.

Users who can properly balance their chakras with natural energy will not see any animalistic modifications in their bodies. The only exception is black pigmentation surrounding their eyes and the eyes themselves, which vary depending on where the individual learnt Sage Mode. There are various forms of Sage Mode performed in the entire series by notable characters, with each of them having their distinctive powers and abilities.

Sage Mode advances the user’s physical strength, reflexes, perception and durability. It also enhances the user’s ninjutsu and taijutsu. It also grants users the ability to sense chakra around them without needing to see them.

Creation and History of Sage Mode

Sage Mode has been taught in two locations: at Mount Myōboku by the toads and in Ryūchi Cave by the Snakes. To invoke Senjutsu, Sage Mode users must have “extreme chakra levels”. It is also critical that their bodies be able to withstand the additional power. Because of this, Orochimaru, who discovered the Ryūchi Cave and gained the power to shape Senjutsu chakra, was unable to perform Sage Transformation to enter Sage Mode.

To enter Sage Mode, the gatherer must remain completely still in order to be one with nature and balance the natural energy with their own physical and spiritual forces. Senjutsu will not work if the person applied too little natural energy to it. If they consume too much natural energy, their bodies will turn to stone forever; people will also be converted into the animal whose school from where the senjutsu was taught.

Mount Myōboku’s toads have created a number of tools to aid in Sage Mode learning. The applicant’s body will begin passively absorbing natural energy after applying a specific oil. If this oil is transported outside of Mount Myōboku, it will evaporate, making it solely usable for learning. The toads also have a special staff that, when struck, drains all of the gatherer’s natural energy, undoing any transformations before they become permanent and the user turns to stone.

At Ryūchi Cave, one must be bitten by the White Snake Sage, who injected natural energy into them. According to mythology, if one’s body is powerful enough to resist the injection, the power will be accepted without reservation. Otherwise, the snake will consume the human whole.

Forms of Sage Mode

Throughout history, there are different variations of Sage Mode depending on where the individual trained.

Sage Transformation

Sage Transformation is a method of achieving Sage Mode that involves a bodily reaction displayed by members of Jūgo’s clan. They get greater physical capabilities and the capacity to do different shape-shifting feats by exposing their particular body fluids to natural energy.

Notable Users of Sage Mode & Their Transformations are:

Naruto Uzumaki

Naruto Uzumaki’s irides turn yellow, and his pupils are toad-like, with orange pigmentation around his eyes.

Jiraiya

Jiraiya was unable to properly balance his own chakra with natural energy, and as a result, when using Sage Mode, his nose grows larger and develops warts, his teeth sharpen, he grows a goatee, and he develops toad-like eyes. Some of the physical changes, such as the toad posture and webbed feet, are helpful and improve his maneuverability, and he can actively materialize the changes to take advantage of them.

Hashirama Senju

Hashirama Senju’s irides turn yellow, and a black pigmentation surrounds his eyes that extends to his ears with an additional round marking on his forehead with a dot in the center.

Minato Namikaze

Minato Namikaze’s irides turn yellow and he gets toad-like pupils, with an orange pigmentation around his eyes.

Jūgo

Jūgo’s complexion darkens and his sclerae become black. He also has a black stripe extending down the bridge of his nose from the middle of his forehead. He gains a significant boost in general abilities, but succumbs to his bloodthirsty side, as indicated by a change in his voice.

Kabuto Yakushi

Kabuto has snake-like irides, blackened sclerae, and purple pigmentation around his eyes that extends down to his shoulder blades. His snake-like features intensify as he grows four horns, prompting him to declare that he had symbolically evolved from a “snake” to a “dragon”.

Mitsuki

Mitsuki acquires a cyan chakra cloak that forms ethereal snakes around his body to increase the range of his attacks. A single horn protrudes from his brow and he develops black marks around his eyes.

Koji Kashin

Koji Kashin has toad-like irides, with dark pigmentation around his eyes.

Tailed Beast Sage Mode

Naruto gains the ability to combine Sage Mode with his Tailed Beast Mode after gaining the cooperation of the Nine-Tails. The red irides turn orange, and the slotted pupils of conventional Nine-Tails transformations blend with the Sage Mode’s eye pattern to produce a cross-like pattern. Naruto’s shroud’s design also changes. While in combined form, Naruto obtains access to both forms’ advantages, such as the ability to augment Tailed Beast Balls with senjutsu chakra.

The combination of both forms provides greater power than either Tailed Beast Mode or Sage Mode alone, allowing Naruto to compete with the likes of Obito Uchiha as the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki. Naruto’s proficiency with this form had improved to the point where he could fly within it and effortlessly shatter Truth-Seeking Balls during his confrontation with Toneri Ōtsutsuki two years after the War.

Six Paths Sage Mode

Six Paths Sage Mode is a divine metamorphosis bestowed by Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki to individuals with unwavering faith and the courage to never give up. It dramatically increases the user’s abilities and allows them to use a variety of new techniques.
