When Butsuma first appeared, he scolded his youngest son Itama for crying as the newest battle fatalities were buried — one of his kids, Kawarama, among them — because shinobi were not supposed to express emotions. When Hashirama challenged him about sending a youngster like Kawarama to fight, Butsuma struck his son in the face, saying that Kawarama died as a true shinobi.
With Hashirama doubting whether it was death that made a shinobi worthy, and whether they weren’t just perpetuating an eternal cycle, he warned him that anybody with a weapon is an enemy. When he had reached his limit with Hashirama, he was about to strike him again but Tobirama intervened and explained that Hashirama was only grieving. After calming down himself, he told Hashirama to do the same.
Later, Butsuma had Tobirama follow his brother and report back to him after learning that Hashirama had been spending time with an unknown person. Butsuma revealed to his son that Madara was an Uchiha and that in order for Hashirama’s actions to not appear treacherous in front of the other Senju for hanging out with a child who had killed several of their strongest, he needed to spy on the young man and kill him if he ever discovered the secret mission. He afterwards followed Hashirama to where he met Madara and observed as Hashirama and Madara fled the area.
Butsuma prepared to make a move after realizing Hashirama must have alerted Madara, but was met by Tajima and Izuna Uchiha as both Butsuma and Tobirama greeted them contentiously. As both sides attempted to assault the other’s son, trying to gain an advantage over the other because they were evenly matched, their sons deflected their potentially lethal attacks. Butsuma listened as his son tried to reason with their opposition as Hashirama joined the battlefield. Butsuma subsequently watched in disbelief as the young Madara awakened his Sharingan right in front of them, and wondered whether he had just woken it.
Butsuma appeared to be a stoic and calm man, yet he was also severe and combative. He lost his cool and even hit his son Hashirama when the latter mentioned using innocent children as shinobi, claiming that they had died as real shinobi and would not stand for his son sullying that memory.
He believed that teaching one’s children to be the greatest shinobi could be the most loving thing a parent could do for their child. He and Tajima were also quite similar as a result of their constant clashes, both in skill and mindset, which was why each confrontation presumably ended in stalemate. They were even willing to kill each other’s progeny merely to create an opening to attack each other.
Despite the fact that the time he lived in made him appear to be a harsh dad, he adored his sons. He kept it a secret from the rest of the clan after learning Hashirama frequently went out to hang out with a member of the Uchiha Clan to avoid Hashirama being labeled a traitor. He was also enraged when Hashirama “disrespected” Kawarama, but when Tobirama pointed out that Hashirama was depressed, he stopped beating Hashirama and told him to calm down.
Butsuma was a tall man with dark eyes and shoulder-length black hair held back out of his face by a piece of light green fabric tied around his brow. He also had pronounced jawlines and wore the red standard armor of the time, which was branded with the Senju insignia on the front and both sides of the shoulder plates, as well as mesh armor underneath. He also wore a sword over his right shoulder, which was often contemplated by a tantō over his left shoulder guard. He is shown wearing black civilian robes similar to those worn by his clansmen while in the Senju clan’s castle.
Little is known about Butsuma’s abilities, but the fact that he occasionally carried a sword on his back and a tantō on his shoulder suggests that he practiced kenjutsu. His might was also said to be comparable to that of his rival Tajima Uchiha, a Sharingan wielder. He was a tremendously gifted shinobi if he could survive till maturity during a time when many young children died in warfare.
(To Hashirama) “What we’re doing is simply being respectful. Once you set on the field of battle, regardless of age, you will be treated accordingly. Raising our children into capable shinobi… is the most sincere form of love a parent can give!”
A. Butsuma Senju is known to be as skilled as Tajima Uchiha on the battlefield. The fact that he managed to survive long enough during the war-torn era is proof of it.
