Deidara was an Iwagakure shinobi and he learned the Explosion Release from Oniki who was a member of the Explosion Corps. Even though he was praised for his clay sculptures, Deidara wanted to reach greater heights for his art, which made him steal his village’s kinjutsu which allows a person to knead chakra into their desired shape. He uses explosive clay against his enemies. Deidara became a bomber and offered his services to many different countries.
Deidara’s way of working caught the eye of the Akatsuki, and they sent Itachi, Kisame, and Sasori to recruit him. Deidara refused to accept their offer. Itachi then challenged him, stating that if Deidara won, they would leave him alone; but if Itachi won, Deidara had to join them. Itachi easily defeats Deidara with his Sharingan, and Deidara joins the Akatsuki where he was partnered with Sasori.
Their first mission was to get rid of Orochimaru for betraying the organization. When they arrived in the Land of Wind, they witnessed Orochimaru performing the Impure World Reincarnation, but he retreated as his technique was incomplete. Deidara tried to kill him by blowing up his base after which he and Sasori searched the ruins but they weren't able to confirm his death as they couldn't find a body. Deidara went back to Iwagakure and destroyed it by planting a bomb and flying away.
Deidara hadn't forgotten how Itachi had beaten him with his Sharingan, and so he loathed him for the rest of his life. He knew that Itachi was a compelling opponent, so he trained a lot aiming to get revenge on Itachi and he also created C4.
When Deidara was partnered with Sasori, he was cool and relaxed. He never lost his smirk during a battle, even when he was blamed by his partner. There was a shift in his personality after he was partnered with Tobi, as he used to quickly get angry at his partner’s childish and disrespectful behavior.
He was also a sadistic arsonist in nature and did not enjoy a good fight, he rather thought of blowing up his enemies in a brutal way. He also had a habit of ending his sentences with ‘yeah’ and ‘hm.’ He also respected the ideals of others as he allowed Gaara to protect his village before kidnapping him. He also called Gaara noble.
He refers to his explosive ninjutsu as art and is usually seen saying “Art is an Explosion!” He sees every bombing he does as an accomplishment. He refers to his style as superflat (a type of art) and claims that pop (an art style) is dead now. He would boast about his works of art and even did this during his battle.
He was so full of pride regarding his art that he thought that nothing could defeat it. This led to him abandoning the original strategy planned while battling Sasuke, he changed the tactics to show off his art. He always thought that Itachi’s Sharingan was unartistic and despised that he was defeated by its genjutsu.
Deidara referred to Sasori as ‘Master Sasori’ as he had a lot of respect for him since he was a fellow artist. He also admitted that Sasori was more powerful than he was. Despite this, they also frequently argued with him over the true nature of art. Deidara believed that art is something that lasts for a moment and Sasori believed that fine art lasts for a long time or forever.
This was reflected in their fighting styles where Deidara made clay sculptures and Sasori made long-lasting puppets out of humans. Irrespective of their differences, Deidara respected Sasori’s beliefs. He was quite sad when Sasori died.
In contrast, his relationship with Tobi was very different as Tobi had great respect for Deidara and called him ‘senpai.’ His childish nature angered and irritated Deidara a lot. This was a surprise to the other Akatsuki members who viewed Deidara as calm and less serious. Tobi used to unintentionally anger Deidara and this made Deidara attack him, which was a sense of comic relief in the show.
But during the serious battle, they put their bickering aside and work well together. He warns Tobi whenever he’s about to do a dangerous attack. Even though they fight a lot, Deidara has a minor sense of appreciation for Tobi.
Deidara has slanted blue eyes and long blond golden hair which he wears in a half ponytail leaving the rest hanging down. His left eye on which he wears the eye scope is covered by bangs. The eye scope tells us that he is a long-distance fighter which can be seen in his fight with Sasuke. It is not permanently attached to his face.
After using Iwagakure’s kinjutsu on himself he developed a mouth on both of his palms and the left side of his chest which is stitched up. He also uses this kinjutsu to supply explosive release into his clay. Before joining the Akatsuki, he wore a blue and gray kimono jacket with a fishnet under-shirt, khaki pants with sandals, and a belt-like pouch with a chain. His blond hair used to be tied in a low ponytail at that time and he used to wear an Iwa forehead protector.
After he joined the Akatsuki he wore their signature cloak with navy blue pants, matching shinobi sandals, and the Akatsuki ring on his ring index finger, which was teal in color. He also wired black nail polish on his fingers and toes. Under his cloak, he wore a V-necked sleeveless midriff shirt with mesh armor underneath it along with pants, stirrups, and sandals. He also wore a utility belt with two bags on either side in which he carried his clay.
Due to a certain turn of events, Deidara suffered damage to his arms. His left hand got crushed by Gaara’s sand and his right arm’s elbow was blown away to another dimension by Kakashi’s Kamui. Deidara restored his arms by having Kakuzu sew his arms up with a transplanted arm. His transplanted arm was dark brown and had several wrinkles on them.
When Kabuto reincarnated him, Deidara had dark irides and black sclerae due to the talisman placed on his hand. Deidara did not wear his forehead protector, leaving his hair in a loose state. Like the other reincarnated Akatsuki members, he also wore a red cloak with a white lining. This was his look during the Fourth Great Shinobi War.
Deidara is seen using the Shadow Clone Technique and can be seen merging it with his other techniques. Deidara possesses Explosion Release, allowing him to use both Earth and Lightning chakra. He also possesses a special mouth on each of his palms and the left side of his chest.
The clay he uses can be molded into a variety of shapes and forms, and he can also change their size by infusing them with chakra. He could also control them at will. He can also create live explosives for long-range attacks.
He can create clones and detonate them, which he uses in surprise attacks. He can even control them as minions. He is usually seen with his bird which he uses for transportation and infiltration. Deidara wears a scope on his left eye which helps him observe from a long distance and to counter genjutsu.
He had done this so that he could counter Itachi’s genjutsu and defeat him when they fought again. Deidara was a powerful S-rank missing ninja whose abilities gained him recognition with the Akatsuki members. Some of his special abilities were:
After creating a shadow clone, Deidara puts some explosive clay in it to explode. He uses this as a diversion or to help him escape. This explosion is so strong that it can destroy an entire forest. This technique requires good usage of verbal tricks.
These explosives are made with ceramic clay that is found in the Ceramic Village, and this helps the user knead their chakra into materials. The chakra influences the amount of power that will be in the attack. These explosives are palm-sized and are easy to prepare before combat. They can also be made in various sizes and shapes.
This is the highest form of Deidara’s explosive clay. It is a suicide bombing technique that is kept as a last resort. After he undoes the stitches on his chest’s mouth, he feeds it a large ball of clay. As it has a direct connection with his heart, a large amount of chakra is built. The explosive chakra manifests in his veins and flows through his body. The blast radius of this attack is ten kilometers.
In this technique, Deidara uses his actual mouth instead of the ones present on his hands to create a giant doll. When the doll ruptures, a cloud of microscopic bombs enters the bloodstream of anyone who inhales them. They detonate on command and disintegrate the enemy's body, turning them into dust.
It is a half seal that is used to activate ninjutsu and it is used to concentrate chakra, and many shinobis use it. Deidara uses it whenever he detonates his explosive clay. It is not used in battle.
Other than in the series, Deidara is also a playable character in the following video games:
