Two Tails in Naruto

After the fight with Ten tails, Hagoromo separated the Ten-Tails' chakra within his body and used his Creation of All Things Technique to divide it into nine separated bodies, creating the tailed beasts and giving each a name. Hagoromo instructed all the tailed beasts about the places they would be going and told them that they would meet together once more in the future when someone showed them their true power. Matatabi was sent to a temple built to protect it in a canebrake region.

Hashirama Senju captured eight-tailed beasts during the First Shinobi World War and traded Matatabi and Gyuki to Kumogakure at the Five Kage Summit as a token of friendship and to ensure a balance of power among the new villages. There are wall paintings of Matatabi and Gyuki in a cavern behind the Falls of Truth, where jinchuriki learn to manage the strength of their tailed beasts, showing how long they have been associated with the Land of Lightning. Later, Matatabi was sealed in Yugito Nii when she was 2 years old.

Yugito Nii trained in the cavern behind the Falls of Truth for several years. Later, Akatsuki members Hidan and Kakuza attacked Yugito Nii who transformed into two-tailed beast mode but she still lost to them. The Akatsuki members captured her, stabbed her hands, and hung her on the wall. Zetsu later arrived to take her. After the Akatsuki took the Two-Tails from Yugito and sealed it, Yugito died.

Later, Matatabi was seen in the Fourth Shinobi War when Obito forced the Reincarnated Jinchuriki Yugito Nii to transform into Matatabi. While Naruto and Kurama were busy battling the Six-Tails, the Two-Tails attempted to attack from behind and they were both slammed with such force that they flew into the air.

The opposing beasts regrouped and then made a Tailed Beast Bomb together, but Naruto and Kurama counterattacked with their own Tailed Beast Bomb. Naruto encountered the remaining five-tailed Beasts and their jinchuriki as he entered a deeper plane in the tailed beasts' minds. Matatabi introduced itself as it asked Naruto to extend his hand. Matatabi's release from the chakra receiver later confirmed Kurama's belief that Naruto was the person the Sage of the Six Paths had spoken about so long ago before being resealed as the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path.

When the Ten-Tails looked down at Naruto, Matatabi appeared alongside the other tailed animals, except Gyuki and Shukaku. As it evolved further, the image of the tailed beasts, together with a silhouette of the Sage of Six Paths, drove the Ten-Tails insane. Later, with the help of the other Allied Shinobi Forces, Naruto was able to liberate Matatabi by removing its chakra and other tailed beasts from Obito's body. Later, Matatabi was involved in fighting against Madara, but Madara was able to survive the attack from the tailed beasts and then sealed them inside the Demonic Statue.

Matatabi's chakra which had been transferred to Naruto earlier emerged from within his subconscious, along with the other tailed beasts, to communicate with Naruto and the soul of Hagoromo Otsutsuki. There, they all expressed to the Sage their shared belief that Naruto was the child of prophecy.

Matatabi and other Tailed Beasts’ chakra helped Naruto defeat Kaguya Otsutsuki, and then once more, all Tailed beasts came together to discuss their plan, but Sasuke captured them. Naruto told them he would save them and he did. After Naruto saved them, only Kurama and Eight-Tails stayed with their Jinchuriki, and others went their ways.

Matatabi was also seen in Killer B's dream when he was under Infinite Tsukuyomi with them in the Jinchuriki Squad and fought against Akatsuki together.

In Boruto, Naruto summoned all the tailed beasts to help him fight against Urashiki Otsutsuki because he targeted all the tailed beasts after taking chakra out of Shukaku. Matatabi, Kokuo, and Chomei refused to help because they didn't want to be captured again by humans. Later, Matatabi and other tailed beasts gathered when Kumara sacrificed himself in the fight against Isshiki Otsutsuki.

Matatabi is a kind and polite tailed beast who has always been respected and also shown respect to Naruto, while the other tailed beasts were rude to him. Matatabi does not trust any humans other than Naruto.

Matatabi resembles two mythological Japanese folk monsters, the Bakeneko and the Kasha, but in Naruto, he is covered in blue flame. Matatabi uses fire-based techniques, as stated by its appearance, making the beast a better fit for Konoha than the Hidden Cloud.

Matatabi, as a tailed beast, possesses a massive amount of chakra that it may transfer to others and use to produce the Tailed Beast Bomb. Its look suggests that it has the ability to use Fire Release, which it can lend to its jinchuriki to make fireballs. Matatabi's muscles are highly flexible, allowing them to move quickly despite their massive size while the Tailed-Beast’ raw strength is great.
