Ajisai was a Genin of Amegakure during the start of the civil war in the Village Hidden By Rain. She was also one of the followers of the Akatsuki group, which was led by Pain and Lady Angel (Konan).
Konan recruited a Genin group to participate in the upcoming Chunin Exams that were being held in Konohagakure and Sunagakure during Amegakure's restoration after the end of the civil war. As Konan had ordered, they were all to remain silent regarding Hanzo's passing. Ajisai and her teammates were to gather as much information as possible during the exams, about any shinobi who displayed very high chakra levels. Konan had told them that if they identified any Jinchuriki, Ajisai and her team should gather intel about them and return back to the village.
Ajisai and her companions were randomly divided into different rooms when they arrived at Konohagakure for the first exam, with Room 3 assigned to her. The first exam proctor, Shikamaru Nara, described the purpose of the written test. Her team won the first round because their total score was exactly 100 points as it should have been and because they left the bonus question blank.
The numbers of competitors were way more than what the Chunin exam council thought, and a preliminary round was held to reduce the number of competitors. Only the first 30 teams to reach Sunagakure would advance to the second round. Her team eventually made it to the Demon Desert as one of the first 30 teams.
They approached Team Komugi on the second exam day and left when they realized there wasn't a jinchuriki in that group. As instructed, they kept searching for high chakra level shinobi on the exam grounds the following day and eventually discovered Team 10. They tried to escape after realizing their chakra levels weren't high enough to be jinchuriki, but their opponents chased them, intending to steal their scroll. Ajisai and Tenten were sucked into the crumbling ground as the battle raged within the ruins.
The Ame-nin pretended to be unconscious when Tenten recovered and proceeded to check on Ajisai, waiting for Tenten to get close enough to attack. However, Tenten brought Ajisai some water and calmly requested that she put her weapon away. Ajisai chose to call her own water rather than accept "charity" from one of the Five Great Shinobi Countries. Ajisai agreed to a truce and joined forces with Tenten to flee the ruin, letting it be known that she hated later nations.
Ajisai observed how ignorant the larger nations were of the struggles Amegakure and other smaller towns had to go through while Tenten tried to be polite. Tenten remarked that because of the extreme privacy of the village, it would be challenging to understand Amegakure. They soon learned that a colony of huge ants lived in the ruins.
Ajisai claimed that she wanted to capture and adopt one of the huge ants for use in summoning in the future. They struggled to reach the surface because of the debris and sand in their way. Ajisai called her gigantic panda to stop the gigantic ants as they were chased by them.
She started using her sealing method to get rid of as much sand as she could. She encouraged Tenten to help because she was too exhausted to finish it. Instead, Tenten opened a huge container of water to physically wash away the hurdle since she was determined to make her efforts pay off. They agreed to put their arguments aside once they were back on the surface and with their respective teams, promising to cross paths again in the third phase.
Gaara made the decision to cancel the third exam this year in response to the uproar surrounding the second exam. Instead, a report on each participant would be forwarded to their village heads, who would then decide whether or not to promote them. After arriving back in Amegakure, Konan appreciated Ajisai's team report and gave them a promotion. Upon learning this, Ajisai was pleased and eager for her first S-rank task. However, she died in this mission. Later, Ryusui and Yudachi took her corpse to Amegakure's tallest tower, where Konan was waiting.
After Jiraiya and Pain had a fight, Pain turned Ajisai’s corpse into his new Animal Path. In the anime, Tsurugi and the hunter-nins he was with were slaughtered by Pain after she located the Six-Tails' jinchuriki. After that, Utakata approached her along with the other Paths, at which point he changed into his Version 2 form. She called forth her chameleon as the battle got underway to contain the jinchuriki. After his death, she gathered the Human Path and retreated once her summon vanished. Pain captured Utakata, and the Akatsuki then took the Six-Tails from him.
Later, Ajisai is seen in Konoha as Pain comes to the village to capture the Nine-Tail Jinchuriki Naruto Uzumaki. The Asura Path launches the Animal Path through the village's barrier. The Animal Path, one of the Paths entrusted with providing distractions, sends various animals to wander through the village. The Animal Path later mobilizes alongside the Human Path and targets the Konohagakure Intelligence Division, where it finds a chakra receiver.
The Animal Path summons the other Six Paths of Pain to the Deva Path's side when Uzumaki Naruto arrives at the village. It then issues multiple summons that Gamabunta, Gamaken, and Gamahiro slay. Naruto then uses his Sage Technique spinning serial spheres inside Bunta's mouth to deactivate The Path.
Ajisai looked to Pain and Konan with unwavering confidence and faith, firmly supporting and believing in their perspectives of the world and their ambitions to alter it. As a result, Ajisai displayed obvious contempt for the Five Great Shinobi Countries, holding them responsible for the suffering of smaller countries due to the conflicts they pulled others into.
Despite this, Ajisai is open-minded and discovers that the Five Great Shinobi Countries' organizational structure does not define everyone who originates from it, as evidenced by the respect Ajisai grows for Tenten. Ajisai was a very serious person in the anime while alive. She was faithful to her mission and never spoke more than necessary.
When she was alive, Ajisai had purple hair that was styled in an onion-like bun. Her eyes were a pale green color with black pupils. Ajisai had bangs that covered her forehead protector and was dressed in a light purple neck-collared kimono jacket with a brown-orange sash around her waist.
The second Animal Path's body belonged to Ajisai, making it the sole female body of Pain. Similar to the first Animal Path, it was studded with chakra receivers: two studs on each forearm, three in a row vertically down each cheek, one above the nose, two on either side of the neck, and two on each cheek. The top of its head is covered in an orange-colored bun with spikes of hair sticking out of it that looks like an onion.
Ajisai was one of the most skilled Kunoichi of Amegakure. This made her the team leader when Konan sent Amegakure Genin to the Chunin exam hosted by Sunagakure and Konohagakure.
She showcased visible taijutsu prowess by successfully defending herself without taking damage during full-fledged combat with other genin. She also possessed good reflexes because she could evade a kunai thrown her way with little effort. She also had surprisingly substantial chakra reserves, with the capacity to store sizable portions of the environment that stand in her way.
Ajisai specialized in fuinjutsu and showed remarkable skill in storage-style scroll sealing. She brought several small sealing tags for use in combat, each containing various tools and weapons like ropes, debris, and shuriken. She could call up her tools in a flash and surprise her adversaries with a barrage of shuriken or a paper storm, driving them away and allowing her to flee.
A huge panda or a powerful defensive gate that could deflect taijutsu assaults might also be summoned by Ajisai to help her in combat. The Naruto universe's most powerful summons are available to Rinnegan users who follow the Animal Path.
These summons include a huge multi-headed dog that grows new heads whenever it takes damage, a huge panda that can protect the user of the Rinnegan from just about any harm, a huge bird that the user of the Rinnegan may fly on, and a huge chameleon.
A user of the Animal Path can see through the eyes of every creature they summon, making it nearly possible to attack the summoner from a blind spot. Animals summoned appear to be completely immortal because even if they are killed, they can just be summoned immediately after.
