Hiashi’s Background

Hiashi was born seconds before his twin brother Hizashi which made Hiashi the leader of the Hyūga clan and Hizashi a member of the ranch house, whose sole purpose in life is to defend members of the main house. Years later, when his son Neji was born, Hizashi grew enraged that his kid would never be able to realize his full potential as a member of the main family which lead him to publicly detest Hiashi and his daughter.

Hiashi branded Neji’s forehead with the family’s curse and that further strained the two brothers’ relationship. One day, Hizashi gave Hinata a homicidal gaze during her training which led Hiashi to place a curse on his younger brother, inflicting upon him great suffering. He ordered Hizashi to depart because he would no longer accept such circumstances and to never forget his responsibilities.

A Kumogakure Head shinobi visited Konoha as a sign of treaty and kidnapped young Hinata. Hiashi eliminated the abductor, only to realize that it was the Kumogakure envoy. Kumogakure wanted Hiashi’s head in exchange for the life he had taken, or the two villages would resume open conflict.

Konoha was forced to cooperate in order to avoid battle but he refused to fulfill Kumogakure’s desire to research the Byakugan. Because Hizashi’s cursed seal would seal off his Byakugan upon his death, the brothers’ father advised that he be used as a body double. Despite Hiashi’s efforts to find an alternative, Hizashi insisted and claimed that he would finally choose his own fate (to atone for his sins against Hiashi) and spare his brother’s life. Before dying, he urged Hiashi to eventually inform Neji why he had taken this decision.

Originally, he trained Hinata to be the Hyūga clan’s heir. Her lack of confidence, on the other hand, caused him to conclude she was unworthy and hence he focused on his younger daughter Hanabi.

Part 1

Chūnin Exams

Hiashi made his debut in Kurenai’s flashback when she was watching Hinata and Neji’s match in the Chūnin Exams preliminary matches. He was present with Hanabi while witnessing Neji’s match in the final stages. He was astounded that Neji had learned the main house’s secret procedures on his own, but he was let down by Neji’s rage of the main house and his strong belief in fate.

After Neji lost against Naruto Uzumaki and appeared to be at a crossroads in his life as a result of Naruto’s comments, Hiashi decided to tell him about Hizashi’s death. Although Neji didn’t trust him at first, Hiashi bowing down for forgiveness demonstrated that he was correct. He also delivers a letter written by Hizashi outlining the events up to his death.

Konoha Crush

When the Otogakure and the once-allied Sunagakure ninja launched their invasion, Hiashi assisted the other Konoha shinobi in dividing the renegade forces out of the village. Surrounded by shinobi, one of whom confidently stated that there was just one opponent and a large number of them. Hiashi used the Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven with his Byakugan to defeat them all at once and stated that the Hyūga were the most powerful in Konoha.

Hinata was abducted yet again as a pair of Kumogakure shinobi attempted to take the Byakugan. He and Kō Hyuga set out to retrieve Hinata, and they appear just as Neji is going to be killed after attempting to save Hinata. He defends himself with the Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven. When the ninja realizes who he is, he attempts to run out but Hiashi stops him using the Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm.

Hiashi training Neji

Hiashi began taking a more active role in Neji’s training after the Sasuke Recovery Team returned to the hamlet and Neji was resuscitated by the medics at the hospital. They were spotted sparring at the Hyūga estate until Hinata brought them tea and Hiashi proclaimed that they needed to rest. During this time, the three casually conversed until Kiba Inuzuka, Akamaru and Shino Aburame arrived in the property to retrieve Hinata.

Part 2

Pain’s Assault

During Pain’s attack on Konoha, Hiashi was seen with Hanabi. During his absence, he delegated Hinata’s protection to Kō Hyūga. They received the word about the assault while they were dealing with political issues.

When they returned to the village, they were shocked at the extent of devastation and even more stunned to learn that no one had died. What actually astounded Hiashi was that Naruto was the one who saved everyone, after being protected and encouraged by Hinata, who sacrificed her life to help Naruto. Hanabi, being encouraged by her sister’s actions, requested her father to train her more to which Hiashi gladly consented.

While Konoha was rebuilding post Pain’s invasion, Hiashi convened a clan meeting to plan the Fourth Shinobi World War. Despite his surprise, Hiashi concluded that Neji was the greatest candidate to head the Hyūga Clan’s warriors. Following the meeting, Kō challenged Hiashi’s choice, reminding him of Hinata’s growth and the fact that she was from the main house. Hiashi, on the other hand, informed Kō that it wasn’t because he didn’t believe in Hinata, but because she still lacked the self-confidence to lead shinobi during battle.

Fourth Shinobi World War

Upon returning to Konohagakure, Hiashi was assigned to the First Division of the Allied Shinobi Forces under Darui’s command. He used his Byakugan upon taking up his post and notified the forces about the White Zetsu Army advancing along with the revived shinobi, where he was shocked to see Dan and Asuma amongst the reincarnated shinobi.

Hiashi confronted Hizashi, who cursed that, despite the fact that the branch family was intended to protect the main house, he stood before him as an enemy and regretted that this was his fate for denying the main house while he was still alive.

Hiashi, recalling his brother’s final words to him before his death, declared that there was no such fate and that Neji and Hinata were fighting beside one another on the battlefield to show it, not as branch house and main house members, but as two comrades protecting one another. With this, the two brothers began battling. Hiashi stood atop Chōji’s huge fist while the latter restrained his brother in his fist when the battle at the coast ended.

Hiashi and the rest of the Allied Shinobi Forces were eventually transferred to the jinchūriki battlefield. Upon their arrival, Hiashi apologized to his fellow jōnin for keeping them waiting, and praised Ino for diverting the Ten-Tails’ attack. Hiashi witnessed the beast transform and fire another Tailed Beast Ball, which destroyed an entire town, before another one was targeted towards the Alliance’s Headquarters.

Later, Hiashi and Neji repulsed the Ten-Tails onslaught and went on to warn Naruto that in battle, people could die but they had to fight on to ensure that no one dies, and that he, Neji and Hinata would protect him. He deflected the beast’s tail as it attacked the alliance and later watched as Neji sacrificed himself to save Naruto and Hinata.

After his nephew died, he apologized to his brother for not being able to defend Neji and later absorbed some of Naruto’s chakra. Hiashi later observed what happened on the battlefield and upon being questioned by a fellow shinobi about the Ten-Tails being defeated, he replied that was not the case.

Naruto and Hinata’s Wedding

An emotional Hiashi is seen beside his younger daughter Hanabi, before Hinata is about to get married to Naruto Uzumaki.

New Era

Hiashi is a very loving grandfather to his children Boruto and Himawari and his nature appears to be heavily transformed as compared to before. Even though he still holds pride in his clan’s abilities, he has become rather humble and developed a sense of humor when he tells Naruto being worried about Boruto because he is his son and referred to Naruto’s mischiefs when he was younger.

Hiashi’s Personality

Initially, Hiashi generally is very stern and strict, as he put both his daughters under extensive training, and rarely complimented their progress. He was ready to place the cursed seal to punish his brother and nephew for being hostile to the royal house. This is especially true of Hinata; as when she was assigned to Kurenai, he told that he was unconcerned about her death and even said that the Hyūga clan had no use for a weak successor.

However, he truly cares for them as a part of the family, as evidenced by his hesitation to let his brother die in order to protect the secrets of the Byakugan or when he asked Kakashi not to destroy the moon as Hinata and Hanabi were on it. He didn’t consider Hinata’s ability or potential to be lacking but rather her determination to succeed as the Hyūga’s heir.

He believed she was worthy of becoming the heir, continuously trying to motivate her, but was eventually convinced by his father to focus on the well-being of the entire clan, reluctantly depriving Hinata of her position. He was also pleased to learn how hard she fought against Pain.

While he proudly believes the Hyūga to be the mightiest clan of Konoha, he is also very honest as he believes Hizashi should have been the clan’s successor after witnessing Neji’s skills and potential far surpassing both his daughters’. He was also very humble and began to develop questions about the clan’s caste system and his brother’s noble sacrifice.

Knowing of Neji’s animosity towards the main house for its treatment of the branch house, soon after Naruto Uzumaki made Neji question his life choices, Hiashi decided to make amends with his nephew by telling the full story of Hizashi’s sacrifice. He even went so far as to bow and apologize to his nephew. He also trained Neji in the full combat style of the Hyūga clan, which was not the standard to pass down hidden tactics to the branch house; this showed Hiashi to have become much more tolerant and not as tightly loyal to traditions, thus beginning to unify the clan once more.

New Era

Hiashi has become considerably more lightened and happy in later years, doting on his grandkids Boruto and Himawari. As Kurenai Yūhi pointed out, this has always been his true nature, but it was suppressed after the death of his brother and disillusioned him into believing strength is important in order to survive.

Hiashi acknowledged that seeing Naruto transform Neji’s perspective on life helped him reclaim his previous self. Even more, he became close to Naruto since his son-in-law refers to him as “Father”. His general perspective has evolved to regard violence as meaningless and he seeks to avoid it whenever possible, valuing life and the success of his clan even more than ever. He has also become more humble and gained a sense of humor.

Hiashi’s Appearance

With the exception of an unmarked forehead, Hiashi is an identical twin to his brother Hizashi. Like all members of his clan, he possesses long, black hair and featureless white eyes. He usually dresses in traditional, loose-fitting robes and a long-sleeved, brown haori. As a member of the Allied Shinobi Forces, he wore the traditional Konoha Shinobi uniform as well as the Alliance’s forehead protector.

Years later, he began to exhibit signs of aging; his hair has begun to turn grey particularly around his temples. He is also slightly thinner, with evident creases, particularly around the corners of his lips, around his eyes and across his forehead.

Hiashi’s Abilities

He is undoubtedly a powerful shinobi as the leader of the Hyūga clan and knows all of his clan’s secret combat skills and fighting styles. He is reputed to know more about his clan and their abilities than anyone else. His prowess was essential during the Konoha crush, when he faced and destroyed multiple Sunagakure and Otogakure shinobi at the same time.

Hiashi was also able to deflect several of the Ten-Tails’ tails while battling alongside his comrades during the Fourth Shinobi World War. As the clan’s head and a main branch member, he is skilled in the clan’s particular juinjutsu, which is used to brand Hyūga clan branch house members. He may use it instantly to activate the cursed seal and subjugate his target.

His health has naturally deteriorated with age, since Hanabi was against Hiashi even competing in a sparring match for fear of his back giving out. Nonetheless, he is still recognised as the strongest member of his clan, including Hanabi, who is being groomed as his successor. Indeed, his prowess was still demonstrated by his ability to subdue two shinobi at the same time.

Dōjutsu

Hiashi possesses the Byakugan, a dōjutsu kekkei genkai that provides him a nearly 360 degree range of vision (with the exception of a small blind area at the upper thoracic vertebrae), x-ray vision, and the capacity to perceive the chakra pathway system. His prowess was proven to be great enough to perceive the thoughts and feelings of anyone he stared at.

Taijutsu

Hiashi is a real master of the Gentle Fist, the Hyūga clan’s secret taijutsu art. Hiashi’s power was initially revealed when he murdered Kumogakure’s Head Ninja with a single hit to the chakra pathway system surrounding his heart, leaving the fight unhurt.

During Orochimaru’s invasion, Hiashi exhibited exceptional talent with the Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven Technique, expanding its range to repel multiple Oto and Suna ninja at the same time. They were able to deflect the Ten-Tails’ tail without surrendering any ground by combining the force of their Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven Technique with Neji’s.

He can even use the Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm to hit targets that are outside of its typical range. He can evenly employ the Eight Trigrams Vacuum Wall Palm with such force that he could buffet one of the Ten-Tails’ tails away by himself.
