Chiyo often goes by the name ‘Honorable Grandmother Chiyo’ by the villagers of Sunagakure. She was the Leader of the Puppet Brigade. Chiyo also excelled in medical ninjutsu, especially in creating antidotes for various poisons. Chiyo and her brother Ebizō were highly regarded around the village as Honored Siblings.
Chiyo excelled with the knowledge of various poisons and her skills in handling them were highly effective during the Second Shinobi War, only to be countered innumerable times by Tsunade’s medical skills causing her to hold a grudge against her and labeling her as ‘Slug Queen’. Chiyo developed various antidotes including the one that can be used against the venom of Salamander, when she fought against Hanzo and his Salamander numerous times during the War.
Under the orders of the Fourth Kazekage, Chiyo sealed Shukaku (The One Tailed Beast) inside Gaara. After some time, Chiyo retired from her post as a counselor and spent her later life fishing with her brother and often played jokes on him by pretending to play dead.
Chiyo often expressed her desire to kill Sakumo Hatake in order to avenge the death of her son and daughter-in-law which orphaned her grandson Sasori. Chiyo watched over Sasori and taught him the Puppet Technique. She also taught him how to develop various poisons. Chiyo discreetly watched Sasori as he created his first Puppets of his father and mother. As Sasori’s skills advanced in developing puppets and poisons, Chiyo grew increasingly concerned for her grandson. However, she did not act on it and spent most of her time helping the village.
One day, Komushi, a Sunagakure Shinobi and Sasori’s only friend, got badly injured during a mission that cost him his right arm. Sasori replaced the injured arm with a fully functional prosthetic arm, coated with Sasori’s latest poison. Later, Komushi ingested the poison accidentally and died. After some time, Chiyo noticed a pattern with Sasori and she went to investigate him. To her shock, she found Komushi’s corpse turned into a human puppet. After that, Sasori abandoned Sunagakure leaving the Father and Mother puppets.
In due course, Chiyo and her brother retired from their duties and they spent their time fishing while remaining disconnected from the outside world. Chiyo solely wished to see her grandson one more time.
After Gaara’s abduction and Konkuro getting poisoned, Baki approached Chiyo and insisted on helping Kankuro. Initially, she refused as she no longer had any interest in any of the village’s affairs. She agreed to help when she learned of Sasori’s involvement.
Upon studying the poison Sasori ingested into Konkuro’s body, she made it certain that she hasn’t come across any such poison and that she would not be able to create an antidote. She admits that Tsunade would be the only person capable of healing him, even though she wasn’t willing to contact her, thinking it would make her village look weaker.
Upon the arrival of Team 7, Chiyo instantly attacks Kakashi presuming him to be the White Fang Of The Leaf: Sakumo Hatake. She was stopped by Ebizo who insisted she look closely and understand that it was not Sakumo. She bursts out laughing after taking a good look at Kakashi, as she realizes that he indeed was not The White Fang.
On the other side, much to Chiyo’s surprise, Sakura is able to heal Kankuro. As Kankuro is healed, Team 7 prepares to go after the Akatsuki to rescue Gaara. Chiyo joins them as an advisor. On their way to the Akatsuki hideout, Chiyo explained to Naruto what a tailed beast was and confessed to sealing the One-Tail inside Gaara. On their way, they encountered Itachi Uchiha, where Chiyo remained at the back to nullify any genjutsu cast on her comrades.
After their brief confrontation with Itachi, Chiyo and Team 7 head towards the Akatsuki hideout. Upon their arrival, they discover that Gaara’s Tailed Beast had been extracted, leaving him dead on the spot. Team 7 and Chiyo split into two teams, with Naruto and Kakashi tailing Deidara as he carried Gaara’s body inside one of his clay birds. Sakura and Chiyo battled against Sasori where Chiyo controlled Sakura using chakra threads to help her avoid Sasori’s attacks. Initially, the battle favored Sakura and Chiyo as they managed to smash Sasori’s puppet armor ‘Hiruko’, revealing Sasori’s true form and the fact that he hasn’t aged a day since his departure from the village two decades ago.
Sasori brings out another one of his puppets, that of the Third Kazekage which leaves Chiyo in shock, as she explains the Third’s unique Iron Sand Technique to Sakura. To counter it, Chiyo summons Sasori’s Mother and Father puppets, though the puppets' weakness proved to be the Iron Sand, leaving Sakura to counter and destroy the Kazekage puppet. Sasori finally reveals the secret of his youth, showcasing his own body turned into a puppet, with his heart being the only living part in his body, making it difficult to kill him.
Chiyo summons her Chikamatsu Collection, a technique that summons 10 puppets. Mocking her, Sasori summons one hundred puppets, a technique only under his possession due to his unique body. Chiyo destroys several of Sasori’s puppets as even though her puppets were outnumbered against Sasori’s, her skills in the quality of teamwork between the puppets far exceeded Sasori’s. During the battle, Chiyo got poisoned by one of Sasori’s puppets leaving her right shoulder slashed. She continued to fight, enduring the pain, and disposed of Sasori’s puppets.
After both Chiyo’s and Sasori’s puppets had been destroyed, they each attempted to conclude the battle by killing one another. Sakura tries to seal Sasori’s Chakra Pathway System using the special chakra-Sealing Orb given to her by Chiyo. Sasori goes to the spare body and tries to stab Chiyo with a poison-coated sword. Sakura takes the blow, giving Chiyo the chance to stab Sasori through his heart using his Parents’ puppets in the form of a hug. Sakura fell unconscious, and believing that she died, Chiyo began resurrecting her in exchange for her own life. After Sasori dies, Chiyo figures out that he took the attack willingly as he simply wanted his parents to hug him.
Concluding the battle against Sasori, Chiyo and Sakura rush towards Gaara’s location. When Sakura declares Gaara dead, Naruto breaks down into tears and talks about his fate as a result of being a Jinchuriki. Chiyo tries to calm him down but he lashes out, marking her error of sealing the One Tail inside of him.
Chiyo, realizing he is correct, tries to resurrect Gaara using her remaining strength. Naruto donates his chakra as she was exhausted after battling Sasori and had very little chakra left in her body. As she revived Gaara, Chiyo talks about the future of Konoha and Sand being safe and then dies peacefully with her view of the world changed because of Naruto’s wisdom.
Chiyo is reincarnated by Kabuto Yakushi during the preparation of the Fourth Shinobi War to fight against the Allied Shinobi Forces. She was part of the group that Chukichi requested, alongside Kimimaro and Hanzo. Chiyo acknowledged that the reincarnation technique has been advanced since the Era of Tobirama Senju and that whoever summoned numerous souls at once, must be something else.
Chiyo and her group encountered the Surprise Attack Division where she complimented Kankuro on defeating Sasori. During this, she swears to take revenge on whoever reincarnated her, while concerned about being embarrassed if they forced her to play dead. This resulted in an argument between her and Hanzo, who called her a “puppet hag” to which she counters by calling him a “big snorkel geezer”.
Hanzo summons his Salamander, and Chiyo informs Kankuro about the Salamander’s poisonous breath, telling him about the antidote having fought Hanzo before. The following day, Chiyo takes control over a Samurai as a puppet. Kankuro intervened and freed the Samurai. Chiyo learns about Kankuro’s possession of the Mother and Father puppets and the Scorpion puppet. She expresses her guilt for not being able to save Sasori as she reminisced about the good and bad memories of her grandson. Chiyo acknowledges the puppet being in good hands.
Later, she observed one of Naruto’s shadow clowns and remarked that the youth has grown way beyond his height. She manages to dodge his Wind Style: Rasenshuriken.
As the Reincarnation technique (Edo Tensei) was released, Chiyo started to deconstruct while she was still battling the alliances. As her spirit was freed, she asserted that she could finally die once again in peace. Kankuro arrives to see her for the final time and as he gets upset to see the elder puppet master leave once again, Chiyo acknowledges his skills, proudly entrusting him to carry on the puppet technique and delivers one final joke about not having to play possum anymore.
Chiyo possessed great wisdom being a veteran. She was also highly devoted to her village. Later, after her retirement from her duties, she had little interest in the affairs of the village as she believed that the next generation can look out for themselves. Chiyo and her brother Ebizo expressed their disappointment when their village was shown to be reliant on others for help.
Chiyo was also pessimistic in nature as she believed that Konoha would send some lower-rank medical ninja to heal Kankuro’s poison. She was surprised as Sakura, a young medical ninja created an antidote against Sasori’s poison which Chiyo herself couldn’t do. After her time with Team 7, her perspective changed about Konoha and she believed that Naruto’s and Gaara’s friendship would lead to a better future for Konoha and the Sand as well as the Shinobi world.
Chiyo would also jump to conclusions in mere moments as seen when she attacked Kakashi Hatake mistakenly assuming him to be the White Fang Sakumo. She is also very mischievous as shown when she pretended to play dead or acted senile to fool others.
Chiyo cared deeply about her grandson Sasori. She sought vengeance upon Sakumo for leaving her grandson orphaned. She was even willing to grant life to the puppets he created even at the cost of her own life. Chiyo only assisted Team 7 during their mission to retrieve Gaara as it involved Sasori. Her love was shown to be split between her family and her devotion to the village as she was hesitant to be clicked in a family photo.
Chiyo showed great respect toward Sakura even though she was the disciple of her eternal rival. She also regretted sealing the One-Tail inside Gaara and thus she sacrificed her life to revive Gaara. She admitted to having too many regrets in life to die in peace while she was battling Sasori.
She was an elderly woman with black eyes and gray hair tied into a bun. During her fight against Sasori, she let her hair loose. She wore a traditional Hidden Sand dark-colored outfit with loose fitting and a poncho-like top.
Chiyo was a powerful kunoichi who was highly regarded around the Sand. Even Tsunade held great respect for her. She defeated Sasori, a very powerful Akatsuki member, with assistance from Sakura. Her abilities were acknowledged by Kabuto Yakushi as he chose to reincarnate her during the Fourth Shinobi War. She was amongst the few Shinobis who were not sealed by the Allied Shinobi Forces only to be later stopped when Itachi released the Reanimation Jutsu.
Chiyo was renowned for her Puppet Mastery throughout Sunagakure. Her skills were invaluable as she was able to create and control puppets. She passed her skills to her grandson Sasori, claiming that it was a traditional technique among the family. After Sasori deserted the village along with his creation i.e. the Father and Mother puppets, Chiyo modified the two unarmed puppets to have intense battle capabilities, enough to stand up to Sasori’s puppet of the Third Kazekage, who was known to be the strongest in Sunagakure’s history.
Chiyo could also use the Puppet Performance: Skillful Achievement With a Human Body, allowing her to control a human if she had no puppets left. She was highly skilled with this tactic and was shown to use it against Sasori by controlling Sakura to dodge Sasori’s attacks, and during the Fourth Shinobi War controlling a Samurai. With this technique, she can control up to 10 humans, using one finger for each. She had exceptional skills with chakra threads as she could place them into puppets without the opponent noticing. She could suppress them to a point where they became invisible and she could use them to control and fire weapons.
Just as Sasori modified his own body into a puppet, Chiyo modified her right arm into a mechanical one, which she usually kept outfitted with a chakra shield and could replace it anytime it sustains damage. She installed the same shield on the Father and Mother puppets.
Chiyo’s most powerful collection of puppets was the Chikamatsu Collection, which was developed by the first puppet user Monzaemon Chikamatsu. The collection consists of 10 very powerful puppets who functioned in a team and were able to counter a hundred puppets of Sasori. The Collection was destroyed in the battle against Sasori.
Chiyo was highly skilled in medical ninjutsu. She used most of her medical knowledge as a poison expert. Chiyo created numerous poisons which were only known to be countered by Tsunade. Chiyo fought against Hanzo during the times of war, allowing her to understand the time it takes for a Salamander to produce its poison and ultimately learn how to create an antidote to counter it. Chiyo also developed a forbidden technique that allowed her to bring someone back from the dead in exchange for her own life.
Chiyo was known to be skilled in fuinjutsu as she sealed Shukaku inside Gaara under the orders of the Fourth Kazekage. She also had skills in countering genjutsu as she had faced the Uchiha Clan in the past. Chiyo was also shown to have some taijutsu skills during her brawl with Naruto and his shadow clones, it was also shown when she went up against Kankuro and his puppet during the war.
(To Ebizo) “Just kidding! I was playing dead.”
(To Baki about Konoha) “Improving your own village’s capability should always be top priority. They are them and we are us! True alliances are nothing more than pipe dreams. At difficult times, when you really need them, the best you get are useless foot soldiers.”
(To Baki) “Don’t treat me like an old lady!”
(To Sasori) “Even retired and a foot in grave, I’ll still take action. I’ve too many regrets to die yet.”
(To Naruto) “I am happy that someone like you has appeared in the world of shinobi that we foolish old people created. Everything I’ve done was a mistake. But now, at the end, it looks like I’ll finally be able to do the right thing. The Sand Village and Konoha. Their future will be much different than the way things were back in my day. That strange power of yours that Kakashi mentioned.. That power will have a strong influence on the future. Become a Hokage like none before you.”
(To Sakura) “And Sakura… Next time, save the people who are dear to you, not some old hag. You and I are very similar. There aren’t many girls as chivalrous as you around. You might become a kunoichi who surpasses her master.”
(Last words) “Naruto… a request from an old woman. You are the only one who knows Gaara’s pain… Gaara also knows your pain. Help Gaara out…”
