A was prepared for the Fourth Raikage post by A, the Third Raikage. By a long-standing Kumogakure tradition that the Raikage have a tag-team partner, at some point in the past, try-outs consisting of young children were gathered to pick one due to A not having a blood sibling who might be his tag-partner.

Only one child (Killer B) could properly match A's power and execute the Lightning Release: Double Lariat on a training dummy after numerous failed attempts.

As a result, A gave that youngster the name "B" and declared that they would now be brothers. He and B would later be partnered with A's cousin, the jinchūriki of the Eight-Tails, on a mission. He informed A that Killer B would require something to fill the gap that would be caused if he were selected as the beast's next jinchūriki while they were on the assignment.

Afterwards, A's cousin Blue B lost control of the beast, causing it to rampage. A was sent to a special team responsible for taming the rabid Eight-Tails. A was told to hold the beast as his father prepared to use the Kohaku no Jōhei after he and the Third Raikage arrived to handle the situation. The Eight-Tails pierced Furui with its horn while the group attempted to tie it, prompting A to cut it off. The Third sealed the beast away temporarily after sufficient planning.

Remembering what his cousin had told him, A tried his best to fill that apparent hole when B became the beast's jinchūriki. A and Minato Namikaze faced off at some point in the Third Shinobi World War. Before turning away, Minato identified Killer B as the jinchūriki of the Eight-Tails.

He also advised A to claim the title of "Kage" the next time they encountered each other, and also to make sure his brother knew who he was before turning neither human nor jinchūriki. They would continue to fight frequently. Jiraiya once came across A and admitted to him that he thought Minato was the "Child of Prophecy."

A received the title of Raikage after his father's death during the Third war. Then, fearing losing him, he prohibited B from continuing his training in the Lightning Release: Lariat and forced him to finish it at the Valley of Clouds and Lightning while confining him to the village. He eventually prohibited B from fully assuming the form of his tailed beast due to its immense power.

A came into contact with Tsunade following a run-in with the Nokizaru Gang and asked her to help remove the Exploding Bug placed in his subordinate. Accepting her challenge to arm wrestle, A used speed to outperform Tsunade after realizing he couldn't outmuscle her physically while still helping his subordinate. Tsunade decided to perform the surgery after diagnosing the problem and learning that one of the insects was also inside A.

Tsunade let Shizune perform the procedure because of haemophobia, something that made A regard her mental state as a weakness and refused to entrust his men's lives to her.

Tsunade invited A to participate in an impromptu Chūnin Exams sponsored by Konohagakure and Sunagakure two years after leaving her village to become the Fifth Hokage. He immediately turned down the offer because he thought the two villages conspired to attack Kumogakure. Instead, A replied that the town was too busy to prepare and instructed C and Darui to watch out for B as he tried to sneak off to this event.

A initially appeared once word of Killer B's capture by Akatsuki reached him. A summoned a conference of the five Kage to discuss Akatsuki after becoming enraged that his brother had disappeared so soon after Yugito Nii. To let Konoha know that Sasuke Uchiha, a former ninja of Konoha, was holding B captive, A had Team Samui deliver a letter to the Hokage.

A left for the Kage meeting with Darui and C as her bodyguards. They met up with Team Samui again on their route to the Land of Iron, and they gave them information about Sasuke that they had learned in Konoha. C discovered right away that Naruto Uzumaki had been tracking Team Samui. A chose to hear Naruto while stopping his troops from attacking him.

Even with Kakashi and Yamato's assistance, Naruto begged the Raikage to spare Sasuke. However, the Raikage firmly declined his request, criticizing him for standing up for a criminal and advised him to consider what he should truly be doing. A immediately loathed the other villages as the Kage Summit got underway.

He expressed his mistrust towards the other Kage. He highlighted that only Kumogakure has never sent a representative to represent Akatsuki and has never used Akatsuki in a dispute. He implied that the Third Hokage and the Fourth Kazekage were eliminated by Danzō Shimura using Akatsuki.

Danzō was proposed to be head of the Shinobi Alliance when the proposal was floated. A was furious, but before he could say much, Zetsu showed up, saying Sasuke was close somewhere. Zetsu was instantly grabbed by A, who later crushed his neck when he didn't react quickly enough to A's injunction for information on Sasuke's whereabouts.

He then set out to find Sasuke alongside C and Darui. A tried to assault Sasuke when he found them but was forced into a fight with Sasuke's team. He first broke Suigetsu's broken blade before combating a transformed Jūgo, who A eventually defeated.

A brief battle broke out between A and Sasuke, and the former lost an arm during this battle. They were both stopped by Gaara, who intercepted in the middle of the quarrel. Sasuke started a cave-in to hide his escape while A was being healed. To catch him and bring him back to the Summit hall, A destroyed the falling rubble and joined the Kazekage. As they arrived, Tobi met them and took Sasuke to safety before informing them of his Eye of the Moon Plot and letting them know that B managed to escape capture.

Shinobi Alliance was once more proposed when Tobi declared the start of the Fourth Shinobi World War, with A being the proposed alliance's leader this time. The Kage consented to this before returning to their villages to prepare for battle. A and his men located B and then headed back to Kumo.

He was engaged in a struggle with Kisame Hoshigaki when they discovered him. Together, A and B beheaded "Kisame". Later, when returning to the village, A yelled angrily at B for acting like they were being abducted. A then called for a war council to discuss the village's military preparedness.

Afterwards, A and the other Alliance leaders convened in Kumogakure to discuss the alliance's system. They discussed what to do with the jinchūriki as their first matter. While A and the other leaders thought Killer B and Naruto should be sent into hiding, the Fifth Hokage believed they should be permitted to fight on the front lines. After the conference with the other heads of the Alliance, the Hokage requested a private meeting with A to request B to teach Naruto how to gain control of the Nine-Tails if the two of them were to be deployed. A agreed to the request, which is why he chose Island Turtle.

Nevertheless, when Ōnoki destroyed the forest and a portion of Madara, A and the others came to after losing consciousness just in time to witness the First Hokage's face sticking out of a regenerated Madara's chest.

After hearing Madara criticize Tsunade and her heritage and admire it all in the same breath, A urged Madara to stop shouting while sounding important as Madara regenerated. With Ōnoki still giving A more mobility, A helped Tsunade attack Madara again, sending the latter crashing to the ground. Gaara, who appeared to have Madara chained and sealed, responded to A's summons. Later, as Madara explained that they had sealed a wood clone, A watched in horror as Tsunade was stabbed by a Susanoo Sword.

Later, A was even more astonished to witness Tsunade make a surprise attack on an unprepared Madara, which encouraged the Tsuchikage as Ōnoki launched his own surprise attack. A watched in horror as Madara asked each of the Kage if they would like his clones to activate Susanoo when he later sent his wood clones to confront each of the Kage.

After reprimanding the Hokage for her hasty fighting while fending off an attack from one of the Susanoo-clad clones, A loses focus for just long enough for the clone to capture him and place him under genjutsu, much to A's dismay. A is inspired to fight even harder when the other Kage rally to each other's sides after being saved by the Tsuchikage's quick thinking and released from the genjutsu.

As the Mizukage noted that things were hopeless for the Kage, A abruptly instructed her to stop talking because he wasn't ready to give up. As a result of Madara's Susanoo de-mate, his attack was unsuccessful.

Madara then explained that he was acting independently with an immortal body since he had breached the agreement between himself and his summoner. A and the other Kage made an effort to prevent Madara from leaving their battleground, but they ultimately lost and suffered severe injuries.

Tsunade was later treated by Karin on the battlefield once Suigetsu, Orochimaru, and Karin arrived. After receiving significant healing, she assisted in the recovery of A and the other Kage. They all moved quickly towards the battleground.

Before entering the battle, A watched Hashirama's memories of the first summit of the five Kage as he made his wishes for the world's future. In response to Hashirama's comment about dreams, A pointed out that the idea of dream preservation was irrelevant for people of their generation.

Afterwards, he moved to where B was and wondered whether, despite what he thought of it, the tendency of individuals who would become Hokage to bow their heads in front of others was a symbol of power. A screamed that he and his brother had better prepare to cause havoc as he rallied the troops around them.

Despite the Alliance's successful defeat of Obito due to their combined efforts, the conflict worsened as Madara was brought back to life.
