Konohamaru was born into the Sarutobi clan of Konohagakure and was thus known as the “Honourable Grandson” because of his family lineage. He began attempting to defeat Hiruzen to succeed him as Hokage in order to be recognised as a person rather than just the Hokage’s grandson.
Konohamaru barges into the Third Hokage’s office to challenge and defeat him in hopes of becoming the Hokage. When he trips down, he blames it on Naruto and the two get into a brawl. He later approaches Naruto to learn the latter’s Sexy Technique upon hearing how easily it worked on Lord Third, ultimately defeating him.
With time, Naruto and Konohamaru develop close friendship which concerns Ebisu, as he thought of Naruto as a negative influence. Nevertheless, Konohamaru continued to train and become stronger, learning from Naruto’s methods, much to Ebisu’s dismay. However, when he passed on what Naruto taught him, Ebisu’s perspective on Naruto changed as he became a Shinobi of Konoha rather than the Nine-Tailed Fox.
Konohamaru and his teammates approach Naruto, who promised to “play ninja” with them but tries to get away by claiming that he needs training. When Sakura asks what “playing ninja” means, Konohamaru, not knowing her, assumes her to be Naruto’s girlfriend, which Naruto doesn’t deny. Sakura punches Naruto and tries attacking Konohamaru and his teammates. While running away for their safety, they collide with Suna-nin Kankurō and Temari.
When Kankurō tries to beat up Konohamaru, he’s saved by Sasuke Uchiha. Afterwards, he gets disappointed by Naruto, mainly in comparison to Sasuke and Suna-nin. After some time, Iruka Umino takes Konohamaru’s Academy class to the Hokage Rock for a history lesson, where the Third Hokage comes across their lesson and tells them that it is important to protect those precious to them.
Upon being asked who is precious to him, Third points towards Konohamaru and the rest of Konoha’s citizens, which puts a smile on his grandson’s face. Later, when Naruto is making way towards the final round of the Chūnin Exams, Konohamaru offers him a few shortcuts, each of which actually take longer, which make Naruto barely reach his destination on time.
During the Konoha invasion, Konohamaru and his class are evacuated to Hokage Rock. He is concerned about his grandfather after the Third Hokage’s picture on the Hokage Rock breaks. Days after the invasion, he attends the Third’s funeral where he is consoled by Iruka.
Konohamaru is devastated by his grandfather’s death and he refuses to play with Naruto. When he learned that Tsunade would be the next Hokage, he worried that she was unworthy of the honor and that her presence would make everyone forget about the Third’s achievements to Konoha. He tries to prevent her from entering the Hokage’s office but she uses her great strength to gain entry anyway. This, combined with her medical knowledge and Will of Fire, convinces Konohamaru that she is qualified to succeed his grandfather.
Konoha prepares for another Chūnin Exams, two years after Naruto leaves to train. Because Naruto is away and so unable to participate, Konohamaru attempts to enter on his behalf, disguised as taller Naruto in order to take the tests, pass and then Naruto will be a chūnin when he returns to the village. Neji Hyūga discovers him before he has a chance to enter.
Although he understands Konohamaru’s reasoning, Neji says that he should not be concerned because Naruto will return when he is ready. Konohamaru then returns to his Academy class, eager to see Naruto.
Naruto returns to Konoha after a two-and-a-half year absence. Konohamaru is one of the first to welcome him and displays a more refined Sexy Technique. Naruto is displeased, arguing that his absence has resulted in the development of even deviant tactics. Konohamaru, now a genin under Ebisu’s command, is sent on their first missions, which are curiously reminiscent of Naruto’s early missions, including the capture of the same escaped cat.
Outside of Ramen Ichiraku, Konohamaru and a shadow clone await Naruto. When he appears, the two Konohamarus employ the Sexy:Girl on Girl Technique, which Naruto approves of but Sakura is repulsed and severely reprimands him.
During Pain’s Assault, Konohamaru stumbles into Pain’s Naraka Path, where locals are interrogated regarding Naruto’s location. He tries to flee silently but inadvertently makes a sound. Ebisu confronts the Naraka Path in order for Konohamaru to flee but he is easily defeated and refuses to reveal Naruto’s location.
Konohamaru assaults the Naraka Path before it can kill him, having decided that running away isn’t something Naruto would do, therefore he won’t either. He dispatched a shadow clone to distract the Naraka Path while he and other shadow clone attacked from behind with a Rasengan. The Naraka Path eventually retreats and the settlement is soon destroyed by Pain.
Despite this, Naruto makes his way back to Konoha and beats Pain. Konohamaru celebrates the triumph with the rest of the village.
Few days later, Konohamaru and his teammates prepare a report on Naruto and question Neji Hyūga about Naruto’s achievements throughout the years. They also pay attention as Neji describes a task he undertook during the Konoha Crush.
Konohamaru meets Naruto in the Forest to compare Sexy Techniques, a contest Konohamaru concedes defeat in. This, however, was just a ruse to bring out the Root members who were following Naruto so that Kakashi Hatake could neutralize them. Naruto congratulates Konohamaru on his victory over the Naraka Path before departing for the Five Kage Summit.
Later, Konohamaru and Moegi collaborate on a “Konoha Hero Newspaper”. When he returns from the Kage Summit, he approaches Naruto for an interview. Naruto declines and Konohamaru can’t help but notice that something about him is off.
Konohamaru attempts to join the Allied Shinobi Forces in order to aid in the Fourth Shinobi World War. When the Fifth Hokage refuses to let him, he attempts to prove himself by fighting Temari. As a final option, Konohamaru assaults her with the Rasengan, but is stopped by Shikamaru Nara, who was informed by Udon and Moegi.
Konohamaru attends an Ebisu-called council on Konoha’s remaining security personnel. Following the meeting, Konohamaru gathers the genin of the village and attempts to organize them for the trials that await them. He joins the Allied Mothers Force in driving away a bunch of Sumo Wrestlers who are attacking the village.
After the Infinite Tsukuyomi was cast, he and everyone else in Konoha were seized by the Ten-Tails roots. Naruto and Sasuke eventually released Konohamaru and the rest of the world from the genjutsu when the war was over.
On the day that Naruto is to be inaugurated as the Seventh Hokage, he is absent for the ceremony. This compelled Konohamaru to fill in for him so that the inauguration could go through as scheduled. Konohamaru eventually became a teacher at the Konoha Academy.
When Konohamaru was introduced while attempting to defeat his grandfather, he found a certain enjoyment of his status as the Hokage’s grandson. This was something that spared him from being punished for his actions and he would mock people who were unwilling to take a hand against him. But, he wasn’t very fond of being known as the, “Honourable grandson”, and so he decided to defeat Third to become the Hokage so that people would recognise him as more than just the Third’s grandson.
After he clashed with Naruto, Konohamaru became impressed by him and made him both his rival and role model, often calling him “boss” and “big brother”. He used to be loud, headstrong and spent sufficient time in developing perverted ninjutsu. He also mimicked Naruto’s kabuki ninja registration photograph when he took his own. He also ends many of his sentences with “kore”, much like Naruto does with “dattebayo”.
However, Konohamaru also adopted some of Naruto’s good qualities like, the process to become Hokage comes with no shortcuts, which made him commit to his studies and missions. While still a genin, he mastered a variety of jōnin-level jutsu and refused to flee away from a fight, even against superior opponents, in his ambition to reach Naruto’s level.
While most of Konohamaru’s admiration of Naruto is well-deserved, some of Konohamaru’s admiration is due to his own gullibility and denseness: when he trips during their first meeting, he blames Naruto, unwilling to blame his own clumsiness.
Konohamaru has demonstrated incredible emotional endurance, rebounding from disasters near to his heart, such as the deaths of his grandfather and uncle, Asuma Sarutobi, in a relatively short period of time. This showcased his capacity to cope with heart-wrenching pain that should have been beyond his years. This part of his personality is most likely modeled after Naruto’s interpretation of the Will of Fire, as he also had to deal with enormous loss and depression at an early age while remaining hopeful and wilful.
Konohamaru eventually abandons his rivalry with Naruto for the Hokage title as he preferred to take the title only after Naruto has had his turn. Years later, Konohamaru has grown far more mature and aware of his task at hand.
As a genin, Konohamaru has spiky brown hair, blue eyes and a little tooth chip. Some of Konohamaru’s appearances show him with blush marks on his cheeks. When he first appears, he is wearing a grey hamlet with a hole at the top for his hair to protrude out. For the rest of Part 1, he wears Naruto’s old goggles, which he replaces with his own forehead protector in Part 2. He has spent most of his life wrapped in a large blue scarf.
Konohamaru’s Part 1 outfit consists of grey shorts and a yellow shirt with a crimson Konoha emblem printed on it. His Part 2 attire is nearly identical, with longer slacks and a pale green jacket with a dark green stripe down the centre. He wears a grey/black zip-up jacket, dark grey slacks, shoes and bandages over both of his arms during the Rinne Festival.
He dresses formally for Naruto and Hinata’s wedding. He has become tall as an adult, with a narrower face and a well-built physique. He wears his scarf with dark blue jeans and black sandals, and while on duty, he wears a flak jacket with a crimson armband with his clan’s emblem on his left arm.
Konohamaru’s performance in the Academy was quite poore, with him unable to correctly apply basic techniques owing to laziness and a desire for quick results. His talents began to blossom from regular training after learning from Naruto’s example of true perseverance. As a genin, he got Temari’s commendation for pressing her, and he also defeated Pain’s Naraka Path.
By adulthood, he became a jōnin recognised as a genius, and a member of the Sarutobi clan’s elite, with exceptional powers.
As a student, he largely learnt from his teachers and Naruto’s techniques that had little or no practical application. After graduating, Konohamaru learned a variety of battle-ready techniques, including the Multiple Shadow Clone Techniques and the Shuriken Shadow Clone Techniques.
Naruto also taught Konohamaru the Rasengan while he was a genin. Initially requiring the assistance of a shadow clone to accomplish the technique, Konohamaru finally learnt to do it with a single hand. He was able to make a Big Ball Rasengan, albeit by luck and without prior instructions.
As he grew older, he mastered a variety of martial styles and ninja techniques. He can summon giant toads and shinobi monkeys. He is also skilled in fūinjutsu, and can use it to break barriers and subdue demons as well as counter seals set in him by an enemy. He can also channel chakra into his weapons to increase their potency.
Konohamaru had grown accustomed to nature transformation prior to the Fourth Shinobi World War, being able to use Fire, Wind and Yang Release. He can use his uncle’s Fire Release: Ash Pile Burning, demonstrating notable skill in Fire Release. He would subsequently learn both his clan’s Fire Release: Great Flame Techniques and his grandfather’s Fire Release: Fire Dragon Flame Bullet.
As an adult, he can use Wind Release to increase the penetrative power of his attacks and even apply it to his Rasengan, a feat previously accomplished only by Naruto Uzumaki. He can also use Lightning Release, which allows him to channel a stream of lightning around himself that shocks anyone who comes into touch with him.
Konohamaru is revealed to be skilled with a number of weapons and he also started wielding trench-blade knuckles like his late uncle. This involves using the Flying Swallow, which can deflect enemy blasts. He can repel numerous assaults with a flurry of spins when supported by the transformed Enra. He can also channel his abilities through a staff.
As an adult, he has demonstrated exceptional taijutsu ability. He has highly skilled chakra control, as seen by his Rasengan and is also known to have vast reservoirs of chakra.
Konohamaru and his squad compete in the Sunagakure Chūnin Exams, where he eventually makes it to the exam’s tournament round. He is pitted against Naruto there. Naruto decides to unleash his Senjutsu when Konohamaru surprises him with his enhanced proficiency.
This, however, disqualifies Naruto, who was unaware of the rule against it. Konohamaru reaches Chūnin status by the end of the exams, dons his new flak jacket and gloats that Naruto is now his subordinate.
