The Goro Goro no Mi is a Logia-type Devil Fruit that transforms its user into a Lightning Human, granting them the ability to create, manipulate, and transform into lightning at will. It was consumed by Enel. The fruit’s abilities were demonstrated during the Skypiea Arc. It was stated that this fruit’s abilities are some of the most invincible powers among all the Devil Fruits in existence.
There is a difference in the portrayal of the fruit’s lightning powers, as they are light blue in color in the anime and video games, but in the manga panels they are yellow.

About six years before the start of the series, Enel discovered the Goro Goro no Mi and consumed it. His desire to acquire such abilities led him to destroy his homeland and develop a god complex.
The fruit’s appearance is unknown.
The main ability of this Logia-class Devil Fruit is that it allows its user to create, manipulate and transform into electricity. The user can discharge various amounts of electricity from their body and control it in any way they like, including its voltage. The highest output is 200 million volts, which is roughly in the range of natural lightning.
Given the inherent destructiveness of lightning, even for a Logia, this power looks exceptionally strong, and it is claimed that among the many Devil Fruits now in existence, the Goro Goro no Mi’s power is one of the few that boasts invincibility.
The user can literally change into their element, just like any other Logia. They can let most assaults (apart from those using Haki or Seastone) phase through them harmlessly because, like electricity, they are essentially immaterial. Due to the threat of electrocution, enemies are discouraged from directly attacking the user, either with their bodies or an electrically conductive weapon, giving the user the advantage in melee combat.
By fully transforming into electricity, they can travel at lightning speed, enabling them to quickly cross enormous distances, escape most attacks, and catch up to any escaping targets. Also, a user of the Goro Goro no Mi has the ability to covertly pass through it by merging their lightning self with conductive things, such as metals like gold. Due to their electrical immunity, the user can freely spawn energy inside their body without suffering any negative effects. Should they have a cardiac arrest, they can use electricity to restart their own heart.
Although the Goro Goro no Mi user poses a serious threat when in close proximity due to their ability to burn and shock humans upon touch, they can summon enormous amounts of electricity to launch long-ranged blasts, striking enemies farther away, so their electrocuting power is not restricted to close quarters.
These attacks can be made to appear as shapeless masses of lightning that are focused or dispersed, and be launched directly at the target of the opposition along a forward course, or made to fall from the sky like actual lightning. Alternatively, more definite shapes, such as animals, could be given to the electricity. The user can create thunderclaps in addition to actual lightning by superheating the air around them, causing it to expand at the speed of sound.
Also, if the user has access to naturally occurring or artificially created thunderclouds in their area, they can use those clouds to significantly increase the range of their lightning manipulation, to the point of dousing entire islands in countless lightning strikes or creating enormous, spherical clouds loaded with enough electricity to completely destroy islands up to a mile across.
The user’s lightning powers even partially penetrate heat and electromagnetic waves, giving them a wide range of applications. For example, the user can direct their electricity into metal like gold to heat it up, melt it, and then reshape it to their liking, as seen when Enel transformed his gold staff into a heat-emitting trident or when he momentarily liquified and took control of the gold plating on his flying ark to entrap his opponent.
The Goro Goro no Mi, on the other hand, enables its user to detect and “read electromagnetic waves” from the air, over considerable distances. Enel developed a continuous, radar-like awareness of everything going on around him by infusing said aspect of his powers with “Mantra” (Kenbunshoku Haki), enabling him to perceive the precise locations, actions, and conversations of anybody present on Skypiea at any time.
The Goro Goro no Mi’s ability has a special weakness in the form of rubber, a natural insulator, despite being incredibly potent. The user of Gomu Gomu no Mi makes him the natural enemy and the counter against the Goro Goro no Mi user. Even the strongest attacks of a Goro Goro no Mi user are ineffective against the rubber body. In fact, all of a Gomu Gomu no Mi user’s attacks against Enel can fully avoid the latter’s intangibility. It is uncertain if other insulators affect Enel’s Logia form in the same way.
Robots are also resistant to Enel’s attacks. Instead of being stricken by those attacks, the robots become super charged. It is also shown that someone with their own power to manipulate lightning can deflect part of the Goro Goro no Mi’s user’s attacks.
Apart from these, the user is vulnerable to the standard Devil Fruit flaws, such as losing their abilities when in touch with water or seastone and having their intangibility negated by Busoshoku Haki.
Enel used his lightning powers while serving as Skypiea’s “God” to punish anybody who disobeyed his declared laws or even just spoke poorly of him, revealed his secrets, etc, placing the residents of Angel Island in particular in a continuous and extreme terror of his wrath. Enel accomplished this by expanding his field of view to encompass the entire nation and giving himself a radar-like knowledge of everything that was happening there by using his high-level “Mantra” in combination with his talent for reading electromagnetic waves from a distance.
Enel would watch over all Skypieans and listen in on their conversations so that, should he overhear any derogatory remarks, he could send down massive lightning bolts to strike the offending parties from up high (his home at God’s Shrine); alternatively, Enel would pay attention when people mentioned him and personally confront them.
Enel used his abilities to power the Maxim, a massive flying ark that was designed to run electricity as its primary power source (the gold from the Shandorian ruins that had been built into the ship conducting the electrical energy that Enel channeled into it); ultimately, he reached “Fairy Vearth” (the Moon) using the ark. This was another non-combative use of his powers.
When Enel engages in direct combat, his abilities make him a very powerful opponent. None of the people he came to battle on Skypiea knew how to manage his Logia powers. His lightning form is shown to give him incredible mobility, enabling him to move quickly and stealthily into opponents’ blind spots, catch up to escaping targets, deflect assaults with hardly any effort, and even pass through electrically conductive things like gold. He can use his electricity to resume his heart’s beat if someone manages to strike him hard enough to stop it.
Enel uses excessive amounts of electricity to travel through opponents bodies all at once to dispatch opponents, frequently knocking them out and causing severe burns. He wasn’t used to facing opponents that could withstand more than one or more of his attacks, therefore most of his attacks, whether they were short-range or long-range, were sufficient to swiftly defeat anybody they were targeted at.
Enel uses the taiko drums on his shoulders as a medium for some of his techniques, especially those that involve creating animals out of electricity. He taps them with his gold staff to make them glow before a specific lightning creature manifests from them to attack his opponent. He transformed his weapon into a sharp trident that exuded electrical heat to both slice and burn his foe, and he used the gold integrated into the Ark Maxim to encase his opponent’s arms in a large gold sphere to impair the opponent’s movements permanently.
Enel is able to greatly expand the scope and range of his lightning skills by using the thunderclouds produced by the Ark Maxim as a medium, resulting in extremely destructive attacks (particularly his Mamaragan and Raigo) that could devastate and destroy entire islands. In order to maximize the power and voltage of his assaults, he is shown to use his Amaru technique to change his body into a massive version of itself composed of pure lightning.
Given Enel’s self-described “God” position, several of his techniques are named after thunder and lightning deities from authentic mythology. He also mentions the number of volts that some of his assaults carry, indicating their level of potency, before their name.
Enel has demonstrated the following techniques using his Devil Fruit’s deadly powers:
El Thor is one of Enel’s most common attacks. He used it anytime he wanted to punish Skypieans all over the land for speaking against him, all the way from his shrine. Skypieans refer to it as “God’s Judgment”. Enel typically leaves a giant hole in the earth after directing a vast cluster of electricity to gather above his target, then causing it to fall down as a massive column with a downward swipe of his arm. This technique has also been used by Enel in more direct combat scenarios, such as a forward beam from his hand.
The Norse God of thunder and lightning is known as Thor.” Additionally, ”el-” is a romanization of the Arabic definite article, and “el” is also the Spanish article for male singular nouns, “I” is a Northwest Semitic word that means “god” or “deity.”
This technique has also been demonstrated in the video game, One Piece: Pirates Carnival, in which it is known as Volt Bolt.
A basic method by which Enel discharges various amounts of electricity, 200 million volts at most, from his body, mostly through his hands, to shock adjacent targets. As the voltage increases, the electricity transforms into a live body of lightning. Depending on the voltage used, there are several variations of this attack, with a million volts being the highly potent one. Following are the variations of the Vari:

In this technique, Enel extends his arms, and with no particular objective in mind, shoots from it a wide, chaotic stream of lightning, shattering everything above him.
The Yoruba religion’s “Shango” (Sàngó) is a Thunder god from West Africa. Due to an ancient Japanese idea that rice plants would mate with or otherwise be fertilized by lightning, the characters for lightning read inazuma, which translates as “rice plant spouse.”
Enel uses this method to superheat the air around him, causing it to expand at the speed of sound and produce a thunderclap. It involves a blinding, full-body discharge of lightning. Enel can then use this to stop non-material attacks that are directed against him.
The Semang people’s “Kari” (also spelled “Karei/Karey”) is a Malayan Thunder God.
In this technique, by administering shocks of electricity to his body that successfully “massage” his heart and restart it, Enel can use a passive use of skills to restore consciousness in the event that his heart goes into cardiac arrest.
In this attack, Enel uses his gold staff to tap one of the drums at his back, causing a massive, eagle-shaped mass of electricity to emerge from it and soar in the direction of the target of his choice, passing through and electrocuting them with 30 million volts.
According to Iroquois (Native American) mythology, “Hino” is a thunder god. The independent translation of the kanji may read “thunderbird,” a figure from Native American people’s mythology that is famed for its control over lightning and thunder. The kanji read raichō, the Japanese name of the rock ptarmigan, a kind of grouse, which Hino can be associated with.
In this attack, Enel uses his staff to tap one of his shoulder drums, creating a massive, wolf-shaped mass of lightning from it that jumps at an opponent and bites them, severely electrocuting them. Even though Kiten’s voltage was not specified, his use of two attacks consecutively (and hitting a single drum like for Hino) may indicate a similar voltage.
Japanese folklore gives the term “Kiten”, which refers to a thunder beast. The Japanese thunder deity Raijin’s companion is typically referred to as Raijū. Raijū is frequently described as a wolf or dog, thus the shape of this attack is a body made of, or wrapped in, lightning that descends to the earth inside thunderbolts.
In this attack, Enel uses his staff to beat two drums on his back, causing them to erupt into a gigantic, electrically-powered dragon. As it flies toward the intended victim, the dragon passes through and electrocutes them with 60 million volts.
The attack is loosely based on “Yagjadbula,” one of the “Lightning Brothers” from Australian Aboriginal mythology, who is shown in well-known rock art in Northern Australia, as indicated by the name of the attack.
The technique is named “Thunder Dragon” in the video game, One Piece: Pirates Carnival.
In this attack, Enel superheats, melts, and then reshapes any metal he touches into the shape he wants, whether it is his gold staff or the gold plating on his floating ark.
This method’s name could be a play on the word “Grom,” which in numerous Slavic languages, including Russian Serbian, signifies “thunder.”
This attack is one of the main purposes of the Maxim, Enel’s flying ark. He uses his power to propel the ark, causing it to spew out a vast artificial jet stream of thunderclouds that begin obscuring the sky. Enel can seize control of the clouds at any time and begin shooting down dozens of lightning bolts from them to obliterate the cloud-covered area. The clouds gather energy as they spread. Enel intended to use this power to completely destroy the nation of Skypiea, staying true to the power’s name.
Enel can use this technique once the thunderclouds of Deathpiea have started to blanket the sky over the area he wants to attack with lightning, forcing the clouds to hit everything beneath them with dozens of enormous lightning bolts that produce fire everywhere they attack and keep getting stronger. Enel can control the individual lightning bolts with his arms, aiming them at particular targets.
“Mamargan” is an Australian Aboriginal thunder god. The kanji meaning heavy thunder, banrai, directly translates to “myriad/10,000 lightning.”
Once Deathpiea has been called upon, one of Enel’s most potent tactics can be used. Enel creates a massive, dark sphere that is loaded with excessive amounts of electricity out of a great deal of previously created thunderclouds. The cloud is then dropped by Enel over a predetermined spot on the ground. The cloud bursts as it hits the ground, unleashing a massive electrical explosion that can completely destroy an island.
This method’s name is a homophone pun on the Japanese-Buddhist term raigō, which means “welcoming approach” and refers to the Amida Buddha’s arrival at the moment of death; here, the rai for “next/coming” is replaced by the rai for “Thunder”.
This is Enel’s ultimate attack. He grows to become a huge, potbellied, Raijin-like lightning figure morphing his body into pure, 200,000,000 volts of electricity. In this state, Enel can fire enormous electrical bolts from his hands and wield his original gold staff, which has been cut into two tridents that burn anything they come in contact with.
This method’s name, a play on the word “to descend from heaven” amoru, refers to both the falling of lightning and the descent of a god. The kanji for “thunder god” is raijin, which refers to either any mythical thunder deity or especially to the Japanese thunder god “Raijin.”
