Gura Gura no Mi in One Piece

The Gura Gura no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that gives its user the ability to create tremors, which makes the user a Tremor Human. It was initially devoured by Edward Newgate (Whitebeard), and later upon his death, its power was robbed by Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard).

The fruit has the reputation to destroy the world and is considered to be the strongest Devil Fruit within the Paramecia class, possessing the powers no less than that of a Logia Devil Fruit.

History and Appearance of the Gura Gura no Mi

At some point in the past, Whitebeard devoured the Gura Gura no Mi. The fruit’s destructive powers are what contributed to him being known as the strongest man in the world.

After Whitebeard died, the Gura Gura no Mi was never reissued owing to the extraordinary circumstances. Blackbeard, his assassin, performed an unknown procedure while wearing a black cloth to somehow transfer the abilities to himself.

This became a global phenomenon, as not only was Blackbeard the first and so far the only person is known to possess two Devil Fruit powers without his body exploding, but he also destroyed the world’s relief at believing that the threat of Gura Gura no Mi was over by demonstrating his new-found powers, causing even more grief.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Gura Gura no Mi

Strengths

This fruit’s ability is to generate large vibrations or shockwaves that can pass through practically any medium, including the ground, the seafloor, and even the air. As a result, Fleet Admiral Sengoku has stated that Whitebeard possesses the power to destroy the world, and Vice-Admiral Tsuru has stated that, even if she retreated to the ends of the ocean, there would be no safe place for her to go in the world when confronted with the full power of the Gura Gura no Mi.

The user of this fruit can easily devastate an entire island, but their limitations are noticeable: it took repeated usages to come close to destroying the Marine base at Marineford (in fact, Whitebeard failed to do so before dying) and Blackbeard almost completed the task; the shockwaves were blocked by the siege wall, albeit one made from an especially strong metal superior to ordinary shell or Seastone; and Admiral Aokiji easily stopped the tsunami that Whitebeard created.

It is noted, however, that only after Ace’s death did Whitebeard fully attempt to destroy Marineford in his rage. However, it was Blackbeard who was truly willing to annihilate the island using both of his Devil Fruit powers. Although neither man succeeded in sinking the island, with both being stopped and the latter lacking enough control over the power, the resulting aftershocks and tsunami were felt away from Marineford.

When Blackbeard obtained this Devil Fruit’s power in an unknown way, he declared that he was truly unbeatable and the strongest, with the power of quakes that “brings destruction to everyone” parked with the darkness that “reduces whatever to nothingness”.

However, as both the Whitebeard and Blackbeard Pirates recognised, the Devil Fruit’s abilities are acknowledged to be a danger to both friends and foes alike. This is primarily due to the fact that these shock waves cause indiscriminate earthquakes, even if the user appears to be able to select both the size of the shock wave and its place of impact. Allies of the user must therefore be ready for the impacts if they don’t want to unintentionally suffer from them.

Additionally, this Devil Fruit enables the user to forcibly grasp any medium, enabling them to “crack” or “pull” on typically intangible things like the air itself.

Weaknesses

Aside from the usual Paramecia Devil Fruit flaws, this Devil Fruit does not appear to have any weaknesses. By combining their cutting-edge Busoshoku Haki, the three Admirals were able to prevent Whitebeard’s shockwave from striking Marineford’s execution platform. Sengoku planted a siege wall as well, but it was made of a material that was impervious to Whitebeard’s shockwaves. As mentioned previously, Whitebeard’s attacks were indiscriminate in who they may harm, therefore his crew and allies had to keep a certain distance from him in order to fight, providing his enemies much wider angles from which to attack him.

Usage and Techniques of the Gura Gura no Mi

Edward Newgate (Whitebeard)

With his Devil Fruit, Whitebeard exhibited four different, distinct techniques. He could also use Busoshoku Haki to imbue the close-range direct contact techniques to assault Logia users. Whitebeard has demonstrated the following techniques using his Devil Fruit abilities:

Kaishin

With a blow, Whitebeard “cracks” the air and unleashes terrifying shock waves in the direction it is facing. Almost any material can be penetrated by these shock waves, which can rip it apart. When shockwaves strike the ground, a destructive earthquake can produce significant tsunamis as a result. Due to its enormous offensive power and great speed, this attack creates a solid defense, destroying and disrupting any attack before it hits Whitebeard. However, this technique isn’t completely unblockable.

Gekishin

It’s a close range variation of Kaishin. Whitebeard may directly crack the air in front of an opponent, several injuring those around as the shockwaves pass through their bodies. Also, Whitebeard had the ability to passively create vibrations around himself.

Shingen no Ichigeki

Whitebeard creates an earthquake hypocenter by concentrating vibrations around his fist in a spherical bubble. He then unleashes a powerful punch that releases the entire focused force at once. He also produced a similar bubble on his foot for a crushing stomp.

Kabutowari

It is a variant of Shingen no Ichigeki. Whitebeard grabs his opponent’s head and concentrates his vibrations around it rather than punching him, which results in crushing damage.

Naginata Rasetsu

Whitebeard surrounds his naginata, the Murakumogiri, with a quake bubble to greatly increase its striking power and range.

Shima Yurashi

By rapidly shifting the air around him, Whitebeard “grabs” an entire region by gripping and pulling on it as though it were substantial. He used this to tilt Marineford’s entire island and the surrounding sea, smashing structures and knocking a giant off his feet in the process.

Marshall D. Teach

In addition to his Yami Yami no Mi powers, Blackbeard is able to use all of Whitebeard’s skills, although he does not possess the same level of mastery. Teach has demonstrated the use of Kaishin, Kabutowari, and Shima Yurashi.

Gurash

Blackbeard slams the air with his fist, sending shockwaves through the atmosphere. This is comparable to Whitebeard’s Gekishin maneuver, however, Blackbeard deployed it farther away and against more enemies.
