Zou in One Piece

The island of Zou is located on the back of Naitamie-Norida elephant Zunesha, who travels the New World. It is known as the “Phantom Island” since Log Poses cannot point towards it. The Mokomo Dukedom of the Mink Tribe calls it their home, as it is to the entire Mink Tribe. The reason behind Zunesha wandering the New World is not known.

History of Zou

For about 1,000 years, Zou has been home exclusively to the Mink Tribe. It is still not known how the kingdom came to be. The sole route to reach this island is to navigate using the Vivre Card, since the island is always on motion.

In the current timeline, Kin’emon, Kozuki Momonosuke, Raizo and Kanjuro traveled to Zou from Wano after they were sent traveling through the time, from 20 years ago, by Kozuki Toki. However, their ship got wrecked due the sea currents, which separated the group to different locations.

When the Straw Hats arrived at Dressrosa, Trafalgar D. Water Law gave Nami a Vivre Card and instructed her to use it in case of emergency. He later disclosed that the card led to Zou. While half of the crew remained in Dressrosa and executed their strategy on taking down Doflamingo, the other crew members departed for Zou in order to keep Momonosuke and Caesar out of Doflamingo’s hands after Sanji’s brief confrontation with Donquixote Doflamingo and the arrival of the Big Mom Pirates, who were looking for Caesar Clown.

Jack and the Beasts Pirates visited Zou seven days before Sanji’s group arrived in quest for Raizo. To keep Raizo safe, the minks told the pirates they didn’t know anything about him and the two groups battled for five days. Ultimately, the minks were rendered helpless by Caesar’s lethal Koro gas, which allowed Jack to win the battle, leaving the minks in grave condition.

Jack and his companions then tortured the minks to extract intel before departing a day later to rescue Doflamingo. When Sanji’s group arrived at Zou that day, they encountered Sheepshead, one of the Beasts Pirates, who was chasing Tristan as they entered the jungle. All the minks were eventually treated, the gas was cleaned, and the Beasts Pirates were driven away.

The Big Mom Pirates subsequently arrived at Zou with Pekoms, a mink, aboard their ship, having overheard the Straw Hat Pirates discussing their location. Later, Pekoms and Capone Bege came to the island looking for both Sanji and Caesar in order to capture each, with the former being needed for Big Mom’s tea party.

Sanji and the other Straw Hats were offered gratitude to let go in appreciation for their assistance in saving his country, but Bege shot him in a fit of rage before he could help his crew capture the Straw Hats and Caesar. Sanji threatened to kill Cesar if Bege or his men attempted to recapture his crewmates after successfully freeing them. As a result of this and Nekomamushi’s arrival, Bege fled Zou with Sanji and Caesar.

Two days later, Luffy and the others showed up and climbed to the top of the elephant. After learning of Jack’s attack, they visited the minks and were reunited with the rest of their crew, and found out about Sanji’s situation. The following day, Kanjuro and Kin’emon entered Zou and the Straw Hats tried to hide them from the minks’ sight but they were unsuccessful.

However, the minks took the Straw Hats and the samurais to see Raizo after disclosing their affiliation with the Kozuki Family of Wano Country.

Later that day, Jack and his men went back to Zou with the intention of overthrowing it by attempting to kill Zunesha itself. Jack’s menace was put to an end when Momonosuke realized he could hear Zunesha’s voice. At Momonosuke’s command, Zunesha sank Jack’s fleet in a single blow.

Geography of Zou

Zunesha is a huge, living and sentient elephant, who cannot be found using a Log Pose or Eternal Pose like other islands, so one has to use a Vivre Card to navigate to reach here. Zunesha’s body has been weakened by time and the environment after traveling the New World for more than a thousand years.

Its ears are ripped, its eyes are sunken into its skull and its skin is thin and brittle. It’s a heavy challenge to climb the elephant and reach the island because of Zunesha’s tall legs.

When Sanij’s group first arrived and was running from Kaidou’s subordinates, they were impeded by the ground of Zou, which is made of Zunesha’s rough and rippled skin; and as Luufy’s group arrived, they were similarly inconvenienced when traveling on the trails of elephant skin. Strange trees with sphere-shaped leaf structures that resemble scales are also emerging out of the ground.

An “Eruption rain”, also known as a massive burst of water, pours down from above and washes away everyone who fails to seek cover in time. It happens twice daily when Zunesha sucks up sea water into its trunk and sprays it over its back. The water also brings marine life, which the Mink Tribe uses as food and is later cleaned by aqueducts so that it can be drunk.

The Mokomo Dukedom, the civilization of the minks, consists of a vast city with many of its ancient buildings embedded in the surrounding rock formations and a region called the Whale Forest with a giant whale-shaped tree. A massive wall completely surrounds Zunesha’s back and a gate is located close to her tail.

Locations of Zou

Front Gate

Most tourists arrive at the Front Gate after ascending Zunesha from the back. It consists of an entrance gate that is a part of the wall around the nation, with the name of the dukedom clearly visible above the entrance itself. It is located at the very edge of Zunesha’s rump. The steel bar gates that barred entry to the dukedom were torn off their hinges during Jack’s invasion.

Near the gate, there are a few observation towers. These have bells called Visitors’ Bells that are rung anytime guards notice foreigners to let the locals know they are there. For welcome guests, the “Welcoming Bell’ is rung, and for enemies, the “Raiding Bell.”

Whale Forest

The Whale Forest is situated close to Zunesha’s neck. A large tree in the middle of the forest is known as the Whale because its trunk appears like the upward-bending baleen of a whale. A Road Poneglyph can be found behind the crest of the Kozuki Family in a hidden compartment in the whale’s tail region.

Raizo was hidden and chained here to keep his location a secret from the pirates when Jack attacked Zou. Due to the existence of the Road Poneglyph, which the Guardians sworn to defend against any intruders, the forest is regarded as sacred.

Guardians Residential District

Nekomamushi and the other Guardians live in a number of wooden houses and buildings in the Guardians Residential District, which also includes a restaurant, a bar and a hotel. This area can be found at the foot of the Whale. During the battle between the minks and the Beasts Pirates, it took some damage.

Kurau City

At the edge of the Whale Forest and roughly in the middle of Zunesha’s back is Kurau City. The Inuarashi Musketeer Squad guards it. The city has numerous aqueducts and sewers that were specially built to handle the “eruption rain.”

The city was severely destroyed by the Beasts Pirates’ attack and Jack set up a number of torture racks in the middle of the streets with which he crucified a number of minks in order to question and torture them for information. The city was abandoned after Jack’s invasion, leaving the majority of the population seeking refuge at the Right Flank Fortress.

Rightrump Forest

The forest located on Zunesha’s right rump is known as Rightrump Forest. Not much details have been revealed about this location.

Deep, Dark Swamp

The swamp on Zunesha’s hindquarters is called Deep, Dark Swamp; it may be reached by continuing straight from Rightrump Forest and turning right to go to the Rightflank Forest.

Rightflank Fortress

Numerous minks reside at the Rightflank Fortress, which is situated inside the Rightflank Forest. It became home to much of the mink tribe after Jack’s invasion. The citadel, according to Wanda, was formerly a residence for the Mink Tribe’s ancestors.

Inhabitants of Zou

The Mokomo Dukedom, which is located on top of Zou, is home to a race of humanoids known as the Mink Tribe. They have fuzzy mammalian traits. This tribe has remained isolated from human civilizations for 1,000 years.
