Shanks and the Straw Hat

Luffy was 6 years old when he met Shanks and his crew when they were stationed in Foosha Village. After the crew was in the village for over a year, Luffy expressed his interest in joining the crew and he even stabbed himself under his left eye to prove that he was worthy enough to join the crew.

Luffy tried his best to convince Shanks to join his crew. In the bar Luffy found the Gomu Gomu no Mi fruit and ate it not knowing that it was a devil fruit. One day when Luffy was sitting at the bar, Higuma's gang came back and Luffy picked a fight with them but they overpowered Luffy. The Red Hair Pirates arrived to fight them but then Higuma threw a smoke bomb to distract them and escaped with Luffy.

He then threw Luffy into the sea and the Sea King was about to attack Luffy but Shanks arrived just in time and scared the Sea King away. Luffy was sad at the fact that Shanks lost his left arm as he saved him.

After the Red Hair Pirates left Foosha Village for good, Luffy decided that he would set sail and make his own crew. Shanks teased him but Luffy declared that he would become the King of the Pirates and make a crew stronger than Shanks. Shanks then gave Luffy his straw hat and told him to return it when he became a great pirate.

Luffy and his new family

After this Garp took Luffy to Mt Colubo and there at Gray Terminal, Luffy followed Ace and Sabo around. Later on, Ace told him to come to live with him in Gray Terminal. Ace declined his offer. One day, Luffy overheard their dream of becoming a pirate, and they thought that he should be killed in case he tries to expose them.

Before they could do that, Luffy was captured by a big group of Pirates who were looking for Ace, as he had stolen from them. Eventually, Ace and Sabo manage to defeat them and saved Luffy.

After this adventure, Ace lectured Luffy about his carelessness but following the incident, the three became the best of friends and always went on adventures together. They swore that they were sworn brothers from now on.

Sabo's father eventually found him and sent his men to get him back. He told his men that they could do whatever they wanted with Ace and Luffy. As Sabo couldn't see his brothers getting hurt, he said that he'll return without throwing a fit as long as his father lets Ace and Luffy go without any harm. Sabo was forced to say that Luffy and Ace had forced him to join him in on their crimes.

Ace and Luffy were tied to a pole and their protests were ignored. They were going to be set on fire and as they were approaching and surrounding them, Ace cut himself and Luffy free and they ran away. As the Bluejam Pirates caught up to them and asked them where the treasure was, Ace told them.

However, the pirates took them both with them in order to verify the location of the treasure. When they got to know that Bluejam wanted to take revenge on the Nobles, even Sabo, Luffy lost it and he fought back and attacked them. As they held and hit Luffy, Ace's Haoshoku Haki activated in anger and knocked them all down.

They subdued Ace and were ready to shoot him but the Dadan family came to their rescue and together, they beat Bluejam. Daman was able to get Ace and Luffy to safety but was severely injured by the flames, so they went to their hideout to treat her wounds.

Later, Dogra told Ace that Sabo's ship had been gunned down by a World Noble and Ace wanted to avenge his brother, but Dadan refused to let him do so. Days later, he received a letter from Sabo telling him that he was alive. He decided to set out to sea early and to see his brothers again. As the Thousand Sunny sailed towards Wano Country, the crew read about the Levely in a newspaper. During their journey, they encountered strange weather, an octopus on their ship, and a school of giant carp. The ship had a challenging time crossing a river and climbing a waterfall. At the top, they faced a whirlpool, but Luffy managed to save his crew before being held back by the octopus. Luffy and the Thousand Sunny ended up washed ashore on a beach in Kuri, where Luffy woke up after a crab pinched his nose.

There, Luffy encountered a komainu (a mythical lion-dog creature) and a baboon, both wielding a katana. While they were fighting, two Beasts Pirates scouts tried to attack Luffy, but he easily defeated them and rescued a little girl named Tama. Tama was grateful and offered to help Luffy by taking him to a safe place for his ship. She explained that the region, Kuri, was under the rule of the powerful Yonko Kaido and that she was waiting for someone named Ace, who had promised to return but was informed by Luffy that Ace had died.

Tama got sick due to drinking contaminated water, and Luffy offered to take her to see a doctor in town. They were later joined by Zoro, who had been saving people from Kaido's thugs. While they were making their way, they encountered Hawkins, a powerful enemy who read their fortunes and revealed a grim survival chance for them. Luffy and Zoro fought back, and with Zoro's help, Luffy managed to escape Hawkins' attacks.

They met a woman named Tsuru, whom Zoro had saved earlier, and she offered to help Tama. They all arrived at Okobore Town, where Tama received assistance from Tsuru in her tea shop.

After Tama was healed, Luffy and his group faced trouble when she was abducted by Gazelleman. They pursued him to Bakura Town. At the town's gates, Luffy used his Haoshoku Haki to knock out some swordsmen who confronted them. As they traveled through the town, Kiku shared its history with Luffy and Zoro. They encountered a sumo wrestling tournament where Kiku impressed by cutting off the wrestler Urashima's top knot.

When Urashima attacked Kiku in anger, Luffy challenged him to a sumo match. Luffy easily defeated Urashima and sent him flying. The group faced more enemies, and when Holed'em arrived and held Tama hostage, Luffy and Zoro decided to steal a wagon of food to distract him. In the confrontation, Luffy fiercely fought against Holed'em and rescued Tama with a powerful punch.

With Tama safe, they made their way to Okobore Town, picking up Law along the way. They delivered the stolen food to the hungry citizens, and Luffy promised Tama that she would never go hungry again. Law scolded Luffy and Zoro for their recklessness but agreed to take them to the ruins of Oden's castle to plan their attack against Kaido.

After parting ways with Tama, Luffy and his group, including Zoro, Law, and Kiku, made their way to the ruins of Oden's castle. There, they encountered Kin'emon and Momonosuke, who explained that they had time-traveled 20 years into the future to escape Orochi's takeover. Kin'emon shared the past events and revealed their plan to attack Kaido on Onigashima during the Fire Festival.

As Kaido arrived in the Kuri region, Luffy confronted him despite Law's warning. He attacked Kaido with powerful moves, but the Emperor proved to be formidable and easily defeated Luffy with a single blow.

Kaido imprisoned Luffy in Udon, where he met Kid. Both of them were forced to work in the prisoner mine, but they didn't back down and showed defiance against Kaido's forces. When confronted by a guard, Luffy and Kid fought back and knocked him out.

Days later, Luffy and Kid were competing over kibi dango rations in the prison, and they stood up against a brutal guard named Dobon. They defeated him and continued their struggle against Kaido's tyranny.

The next day, the old man Luffy helped thanked him, and Luffy showed kindness by giving some of his meal tickets to him. Raizo appeared and told Luffy about the keys to his Seastone handcuffs, which were heavily guarded. Luffy was asked to wait for a bit.

Caribou approached Luffy, seeking an alliance to escape the prison, but Luffy turned him down, suggesting he ally with Kid instead. Kid showed up, and they argued about who would defeat Kaido.

When news of Kid's escape spread, Luffy was tormented by Alpacaman, and he rushed to help Hyogoro when a guard attacked him. Luffy was then attacked by the warden, and he continued to defy the prison guards.

Luffy and Hyogoro were sentenced to the Sumo Inferno, where they had to fight to the death with collars that would behead them if they stepped out of the ring. Luffy used Haoshoku Haki to defeat his opponents and tried to learn an advanced application of Busoshoku Haki.

During a fight with Alpacaman and Madilloman, Hyogoro demonstrated the advanced Haki technique Luffy wanted to learn. Luffy asked him to teach it to him.

At night, the Sumo Inferno was put on hold, and Luffy expressed his reason for wanting to defeat Kaido. He accepted Caribou's help and became eager to rally potential allies within the prison.

During the night, Luffy and Hyogoro overate stolen oshiruko and grew fat. The next day, they prepared for more death matches in the Sumo Inferno. Luffy witnessed the execution of Shimotsuki Yasuie and learned about the side effects of the SMILE fruits.

As Luffy's crewmates caused chaos at the execution site, he cheered for them. He was surprised to see Kid recaptured and Killer revealed as Kamazo. Queen threatened to drown Kid and Killer unless Luffy and Hyogoro died, but Luffy tried to attack Queen, who easily blocked his punch. Before tensions escalated, they heard a loud noise outside the gate.

Luffy was shocked to see an amnesiac Big Mom breaking into the prison. She and Queen argued about oshiruko, and Luffy unwittingly admitted to eating it. Big Mom pushed Luffy and Hyogoro out of the ring, but Luffy managed to remove their collars. He faced Big Mom head-on to protect Hyogoro.

Luffy tried to activate a technique he saw Rayleigh use before, but Big Mom overpowered him. Hyogoro revealed more about advanced Busoshoku Haki. Big Mom pursued Luffy through the prison, and after a chaotic chase, she regained her memories and fell asleep. Queen took Big Mom away, leaving Babanuki in charge.

With communications cut off, Luffy decided to take over the prison and fought the Beasts Pirates. The prisoners initially followed Babanuki's orders, but Luffy encouraged them to have hope. After reuniting with his friends, Luffy prepared for another fight.

After liberating the Udon prison and curing the infected prisoners, Luffy trained his Busoshoku Haki with Hyogoro's guidance. He learned the advanced Haki technique and returned to Amigasa Village with Tama and Chopper.

On the day before the raid on Onigashima, Luffy spoke with Kin'emon and practiced his advanced Haki. On the day of the Fire Festival, the alliance arrived at Port Tokage and battled the Beasts Pirates. Luffy, Law, and Kid destroyed a Beasts Pirates' ship together. They were informed of the alliance between Kaido and Big Mom but remained determined.

Denjiro and the allies joined the fight, and Luffy was shocked to discover that Kanjuro was a spy for Orochi. Momonosuke ordered the alliance to press forward, and Luffy promised to rescue him. Jinbe arrived and officially became a Straw Hat crew member. With the crew gathered, they set out to take over the port in front of Onigashima.

The Straw Hats then arrived at Onigashima with the rebels and began their infiltration. Luffy received a disguise to blend in with the Beasts Pirates as they prepared to face Kaido and Orochi in the decisive battle.

As the battle intensified in Onigashima, Luffy and Zoro encountered Apoo and got injured by his attacks. Kid came to their rescue and they continued their way to Kaido's castle. Inside the castle, Luffy clashed with Ulti and Page One, defeating them. Yamato then appeared and took Luffy to a private spot to talk about his dream to open Wano's borders.

Luffy and Yamato engaged in a fierce battle, but Yamato revealed his desire to join Luffy's crew. They later listened to Kaido's speech, and Luffy removed Yamato's exploding handcuffs. During the raid, Luffy confronted Big Mom and decided to deal with her first before facing Kaido.

The Straw Hats and their allies assembled on the Live Stage and fought their way to the roof of the Skull Dome. Luffy teamed up with X Drake to take on the Numbers as they made their way to the roof to confront Kaido and save Momonosuke.

As Luffy and his allies continued their way to the roof of Kaido's castle, they encountered various challenges and enemies. Luffy accepted the help of X Drake and together they fought their way through the Beasts Pirates. Sanji had to keep Luffy from getting into pointless fights as they progressed.

Luffy and Jinbe eventually reached the fifth level of the castle, where they were joined by Zoro, Law, Kid, and Killer. They prepared to face Kaido and Big Mom in a fierce battle. Luffy used his new Gear 3 attack, Gomu Gomu no Red Roc, to injure Kaido. However, the Emperors counterattacked with their powerful abilities.

Luffy, along with Law and Kid, challenged the Emperors to a game of chicken, but they were struck by powerful attacks. Luffy's determination and endurance allowed him to keep fighting and deliver powerful blows to Kaido.

Despite the intense battle, Luffy eventually got exhausted from using Gear 4 and had to rely on his allies to protect him. He recovered and resumed the fight, realizing that their attacks were indeed weakening Kaido. However, Kaido and Big Mom unleashed a devastating combined attack, and Luffy had to use his foresight to warn the others and avoid the attack.

Luffy continued to stubbornly assault Kaido, but the Emperor managed to knock him out in the end. The battle against the Emperors was far from over, and the outcome remained uncertain.

Despite being defeated by Kaido, Luffy didn't stay down for long. He observed Kaido's attacks and realized how to use Haoshoku Haki to coat his body, allowing him to defend and counterattack without making physical contact. Luffy declared that he would defeat Kaido and clashed with him again.

During the battle, Luffy transmitted a message to Momonosuke using the Voice of All Things, reassuring his crew that he would return and win against Kaido. The Heart Pirates rescued him from the sea, and he regained his strength after eating plenty of food.

Luffy reunited with Momonosuke and encouraged him to transform into a dragon to take them back to Onigashima. They flew to the roof, where Luffy teamed up with Yamato to fight Kaido. Luffy used Gear 4: Snakeman and infused his attacks with Haoshoku Haki, clashing powerfully with Kaido.

Even after being hit hard by Kaido's attacks, Luffy remained determined to defeat the Emperor. He transmitted a message to all of Onigashima using a hidden Mary, boosting the morale of his allies. Luffy clashed with Kaido again, both infusing their attacks with Haoshoku Haki, creating a powerful force that split the sky above Onigashima.

After the sky-splitting clash, Luffy and Kaido continued their intense battle on the roof of Onigashima. Luffy used his newly learned Haoshoku-infused attacks to trade blows with the Emperor. They entered different stages of a special state called Shuron Hakke due to Kaido's alcohol consumption, but Luffy managed to land powerful hits on him.

During their clash, Luffy and Kaido both used Haoshoku Haki, and Luffy's attacks seemed to damage Kaido significantly. When Big Mom was defeated, Luffy kept fighting with determination, using Gear 4: Snakeman to overwhelm Kaido. However, Kaido countered with his advanced Kenbunshoku and managed to escape some of Luffy's attacks.

The battle escalated with Luffy entering Gear 4: Boundman and delivering a massive blow to Kaido. Luffy later transformed into a new form, Gear 5, with an awakened Devil Fruit, and launched a powerful Haoshoku-infused attack that sent Kaido flying onto the rooftop. Luffy used his new power to grab and slam Kaido around in a fierce exchange.

After some interference from a CP0 agent, Luffy awakened his Devil Fruit and transformed further, gaining immense power. He emitted a massive blast of Haoshoku Haki, then grabbed Kaido and slammed him repeatedly. Luffy used his awakened Devil Fruit to deflect Kaido's attacks and continued the battle with determination.

During the intense battle on the rooftop of Onigashima, Luffy used his awakened Devil Fruit to stretch the ground like rubber, confusing Kaido. He managed to enter Kaido's body and used his inflated form to cause discomfort to the Emperor. They exchanged blows, and Luffy used his newfound power to bounce around and attack Kaido.

Luffy transformed into a new form, Gear 5, and used Haoshoku Haki-infused attacks to fight Kaido. They clashed with tremendous force, and Luffy proved to be a formidable opponent. Despite Kaido's powerful attacks, Luffy refused to back down and vowed to take back what was lost.

Luffy used lightning and massive punches to fight Kaido, demonstrating his determination to surpass the Emperor and become the Pirate King. Kaido acknowledged Luffy's spirit and strength but emphasized that Haki was essential to conquering the seas.

In their final showdown, Luffy used his gigantic fist to attack Kaido, who enveloped himself in fire. Luffy's attacks proved effective, and he expressed his desire to create a world where his friends could be happy. In a powerful clash, Luffy's punch sent Kaido crashing into the ground, and Luffy himself passed out from exhaustion.

Yamato caught Luffy as Kaido fell into a lava pit, causing a massive explosion. Luffy was declared the winner of the battle, having defeated both Kaido and Big Mom, and the fight for Wano was finally over.

After the battle, Luffy and his crew enjoyed the festival in Wano to celebrate its liberation. The citizens of Wano knew Momonosuke as "Joy Boy" and believed he had already left the country, as he had promised not to reveal his true identity. Luffy celebrated with the alliance, Law, and Kid's crews, but their festivities were interrupted when Kid showed Luffy a newspaper declaring him one of the new Four Emperors of the Sea, along with Shanks, Blackbeard, and Buggy.

Afterward, Luffy and his crew prepared to leave Wano. Yamato decided to stay on the island to help maintain peace, and the crew bid farewell to Marco. Before their departure, Robin revealed the location of the Ancient Weapon, Pluton, on the island, but Luffy had no interest in it.

Tama expressed her desire to join the crew if she becomes strong enough in the future, and Luffy happily agreed. As they departed, Kid, Law, and Luffy decided to sail to separate islands based on their Log Pose readings, with Luffy drawing the shortest straw, leading the Straw Hats southeast.

Before leaving, Momonosuke tearfully begged Luffy to stay, but Luffy gave him a Jolly Roger flag, symbolizing their friendship, and told him to show it if anyone ever picks a fight with them. Luffy extended an open invitation to Kin'emon, Momonosuke, and Yamato to join his crew if they ever wish to become pirates. They set sail towards Mogura Port, where Luffy and Kid decided to take the risky route over the Koi-climbing Waterfall, breaking one of the Sunny's looms in the process.

Egghead Arc

After landing at the bottom of Wano Country's waterfall and recovering, the Straw Hat crew faced some challenges. Luffy was beaten by Nami and put in a cage for his reckless behavior. Later, they read a newspaper that said Vivi was missing, her father was dead, and Sabo was wrongly accused of killing him. Luffy got upset and wanted to rescue Vivi, but Zoro convinced him to wait and gather more information.

Robin then told them that Buggy had become one of the Four Emperors, which surprised Luffy. They discussed their dreams of finding the final Road Poneglyph to reach Laugh Tale, and everyone was enthusiastic about it.

Days later, they encountered a cold area and a warm eddy with a mysterious figure inside. Luffy and Chopper fell overboard, and the figure turned out to be Jewelry Bonney, a fellow member of the Worst Generation. They were attacked by a giant Mecha-Shark and Jinbe saved them, taking them to Vegapunk's laboratory on Future Island Egghead. Bonney was seeking revenge on Vegapunk for turning her father into a cyborg.

After entering Vegapunk's laboratory on Future Island Egghead, Luffy, Chopper, Jinbe, and Bonney found themselves surrounded by futuristic machines and holographic illusions. They encountered Atlas, a satellite of Vegapunk, who they believed to be Vegapunk himself. Luffy punched Atlas to check if she was real, and she retaliated. They then used a Cooking Machine to satisfy their hunger and found a machine that gave them new clothes.

They were attacked by a police Pacifista for using the machines without paying, but Bonney used her powers to change their ages, confusing the Pacifista. They talked with Bonney about her father, Kuma, and his past with the World Government.

Later, they discovered the ruins of an old mecha and encountered the original Vegapunk, whose body was partly inside the mecha due to a failed experiment. Vegapunk explained that he split his consciousness into satellites, including Atlas. Bonney tried to attack Vegapunk but fainted when her beam attracted bugs.

Vegapunk revealed that the mecha was the Iron Giant, built 900 years ago and attacked Mary Geoise 200 years ago. He shared his dream of creating a free and abundant energy source for the world. He asked Luffy to take him off Egghead as the World Government was after him. CP0 arrived on Egghead, and Vegapunk requested to sail with Luffy. Luffy agreed, and Vegapunk asked him to take Bonney to the Labophase above the clouds before the area turned into a warzone. Vegapunk disappeared suddenly, and Luffy agreed to help.

As Luffy's group headed to the requested location, they encountered Rob Lucci, a CP0 agent who had taken down Atlas. Luffy got angry and activated Gear 5 to fight Lucci. They engaged in a fierce battle, and Sentomaru arrived to counter CP0's invasion but was struck down by Lucci. Luffy managed to overwhelm Lucci with his awakened abilities and environment.

After defeating Lucci, Luffy, Chopper, Jinbe, and Bonney took a Vacuum Rocket to the Labophase. Bonney still wanted revenge on Vegapunk, so Luffy and Chopper tried to stop her. They reunited with the rest of the Straw Hat crew but lost track of Bonney and Vegapunk.

Luffy and Chopper searched the Labophase but couldn't find them. They later learned that an enemy was loose inside the Labophase. Luffy, Zoro, and the Vegapunk satellites stayed in the control room while the others searched for the main Vegapunk.

Suddenly, S-Hawk and S-Bear, two Seraphim, began attacking, and Shaka realized that one of the Vegapunks had ordered them to do so.

Lucci and Kaku, now conscious, asked Luffy and Zoro to free them from their Seastone shackles so they could team up against the Seraphim. Luffy was skeptical of their promise to go back in handcuffs afterward, but he agreed to free them to prevent them from going after his friends. Luffy activated Gear 4, and together with Lucci, they attacked S-Bear, while Zoro and Kaku attacked S-Hawk.

Despite their strong attacks, the Seraphim remained resilient, and Shaka left to search for the main Vegapunk. Luffy's group realized that the Seraphim's strength was linked to the flames on their backs. They tried to diminish the flames but had little success at first. S-Hawk suddenly disappeared, and Lucci explained that it was targeting the weakest targets first. Zoro went after it while Luffy focused on S-Bear.

Appearance

Monkey D. Luffy in One Piece.
Luffy, as seen in the anime.

Luffy is known to have shaggy black hair with round black eyes. He has a small muscular build and is known for his Straw Hat which is like his trademark and the reason why he is known as Straw Hat Luffy. The Straw Hat was given to him by Shanks who had received it from Gol D. Roger himself.

He is seen wearing blue shorts with cuffs, and sandals with a sleeveless red vest. He has a scar with two stitches under his left eye, which he received when he stabbed himself in the eye to prove to Shanks that he was powerful enough to join his crew. He also has an X-shaped scar that he received from Akainu during the Marineford battle.

Before the time skip Luffy wore the same outfit across various arcs. He used to change outfits based on the climate of an island like

  • During the Drum Island Arc, he wore two different parkas the first being a dark red one with fur on the cuffs, hood, and hem and then it changed to a checkered, hooded parka which has white, orange, and bright yellow as its colors.

  • During the Alabasta Arc, he wore desert robes that were dark red in color with three white rings decorated on both sleeves and a light blue wrap over his head.

  • During the Skypiea Arc, he wore a black wristband around his left wrist with a white bangle over it.

  • During the Long Ring Long Land Arc, Luffy had an afro on his head and wore dark red shorts. He also wore red bandages on his feet and had an image of a blue flaming skull and crossbones painted over his chest.

  • During Ennies Lobby, he wore black shorts which had a lot more pockets than his original shorts. Pot Ennies Lobby, Luffy wore a white t-shirt with the Galley-La Company emblem on it in red color with red liners around the top, shoulders, and collars with navy-blue shorts

  • During Thriller Bark, he wore an orange vest with red shorts, and after all the fighting was over Luffy started wearing a darkly decorated, jeweled armband around his left bicep.

  • During Sabaody Archipelago, he wore a blue vest with dark blue shorts.

  • During his time on Amazon Lili, Luffy wore a light blue vest with red shorts.

  • During his Impel Down escape, Luffy wore the same outfit that he was wearing during the Amazon Lily Arc. After his fight with Magellan, his light blue vest was replaced with a bright yellow vest that was given by Inazuma.

After the time skip i.e. after two years Luffy did change a lot he grew a bit taller and became muscular due to his intense training. He has a X-shaped scar that Akainu had given him. His outfit is also the same as it was before, only his vest changed, and he now wears an open, long-sleeved red cardigan with four buttons with a yellow sash tied around his waist just like how Roger did.

  • During the Punk Hazard Arc, Luffy wore a long winter coat which has red and white horizontal stripes with yellow earmuffs.

  • During his time in Dressrosa, Luffy wore an open, short-sleeved shirt with a sunflower pattern blue shorts, and his yellow sash. He wore a fake beard so that no one can recognize him. When he entered the Colosseum, he was seen wearing a Viking style of armor with a caged helmet, he also had the registration number ‘05560’ and ‘Lucy’ written on the back of his shirt. After his battle with Doflamingo, Luffy wore a red tank top with brown shorts.

  • During the Whole cake island Arc, Luffy wore an open, fancy white cardigan that had puffy sleeves with his standard red shorts. He also had a decorative scarf that he wrapped around his neck. After his battle with Charlotte Cracler, his clothes tore and he changed his outfit to a red suit jacket with a brown shirt and a pink ascot with red formal shorts. He also added a black fedora to his Straw Hat.

  • During the Wano Arc, Luffy was seen wearing a red yukata and a patchwork mon a blue sun on a cyan background with a yellow obi. He also wore a topknot on the top of his hair. He also had samurai armor from Hitetsu before the Onigashima raid. Before entering Onigashima, he wore a long, dark-colored coat over his attire. He swapped his regular sash and pants for a purple and orange-brown one respectively. He also wore the Beast Pirates disguise created by Kinemon while he was infiltrating Onigashima.

  • During The Egghead Arc, Luffy wore a long coat with the SSG logo with gloves, an earpiece, and a pair of DOM shoes.

After every Arc Luffy’s outfit changes back to his signature outfit i.e. his red vest with blue shorts. No matter how many outfits Luffy changes, his Straw Hat will always remain constant. He even got a strap attacked to it so that it can hang from his neck during fights.

Personality

The characteristics that define Luffy the most are his complete lack of fear, steadfast self-confidence, and apparent lack of common sense. Despite this, Luffy has a talent for seeing right to the core of a situation and is frequently able to accurately point out a person's character flaws, such as Koby's cowardice or Kuro's weakness as a pirate.

He repeatedly tells his dream to rule as the Pirate King and devotes his entire soul to that goal, demonstrating his extreme ambition. Despite having a childish mindset, he frequently understands the core of the issue and can identify the most straightforward solution.

Luffy resents weak people beyond everything things, though not necessarily in a physical sense. He did admit to Koby that he "hates people like him" because of the cowardly traits and frequent usage of the word "it's impossible" by Koby. On the other hand, he admires people who work hard to overcome their limits and has grown to enjoy Koby as a result of seeing him risk his life.

He strongly states that he doesn't want to be a hero even though he admires heroic individuals. His main complaint is that heroes are basically fully unselfish, and Luffy doesn't truly recognize that quality. Luffy sleeps a lot. Due to his carelessness and even craziness, he has become known to be a very dangerous person.

Despite this, Luffy has also developed his reputation for helping his friends and innocent people against cruel people, and usually going out of his way to save them, unlike other pirates. He believes the Pirate King has the most freedom that there is in the entire globe. Luffy wants to be able to do whatever he likes and rejects being anyone's king or boss.

He is completely happy with his position as captain and initially opposes to taking command of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. He has no desire to know One Piece's current location until he finds it himself and told his crew that he would quit being a pirate if they found out the One Piece’s location from Rayleigh. Luffy has been known to laugh in the face of danger and enter potentially dangerous situations while smiling brightly.

He always sees the good in difficult situations or anything that goes wrong, and he approaches life with a positive attitude. Unlike other people, Luffy does not hesitate to point out someone's flaws openly. This usually turns out to be advantageous because he has motivated many people to be their friends and enemies to become better. When fighting, Luffy's opponents usually think he is making fun of them because of his easygoing attitude and simple-minded words.

As a result, many of his enemies become angry and charge at him. Luffy shares the trait of not being afraid of death with those who have the middle initial D. He will frequently say that it doesn't matter if he succeeds or fails in his adventures. Luffy has strong leadership qualities, which he usually lacks and which causes him to assign his captain duties to another crew member.

When his crewmates are injured, Luffy is extremely loyal to them and can lose his cool quickly. Even if it means breaking a promise to his friends, Luffy is prepared to use extreme measures to take revenge and defend those close to him. According to Luffy, everyone should be loyal to their friends. He values people who are willing to sacrifice their lives for protecting the things that are close to them.

Even if Luffy is seriously injured he makes sure that his crew and allies get treated first even if he’s severely injured. Luffy shows pride in his ship and flag and has a close bond with the Going Merry because, when he was giving it a Viking funeral, he sobbed in regret over how it had collapsed due to their recklessness. The one thing that Luffy does not allow is for someone or something to get involved in another person's fight. Luffy is not embarrassed to express his feelings.

Luffy is aware of starvation, and he hates food wastage. He stole fresh food supplies for the Okobore Town residents and for Tama, who had to endure years of starvation due to Orochi and Kaidou. Luffy is confident in his skills and can challenge anyone in combat and has faced many strong opponents. Just like all the other D’s, Luffy is known for his immense gluttony despite his appearance. Despite his love for combat, Luffy also declines to engage in combat with someone he does not personally see as an opponent and prefers to find a solution or leave the scene instead.

There were times when Luffy appeared to enjoy defeating his enemies. Furthermore, he refused to let his enemies get away with their crimes and, regardless of what others may say, he will take revenge on them. Luffy can also be very stubborn. He tends to disregard and go against his crew and takes the dangerous route for their travel. When he is set on recruiting someone, he is ready to go to great lengths to recruit them even if they refuse.

The abilities of Monkey D. Luffy

Luffy possess an immense amount of physical strength that he got through extensive training that he was put through by Garp. Luffy uses his Gears to increase his physical strength and that helps him subdue powerful enemies like.

Luffy also has a lot of speed, agility and reflexes. This is seen when he escaped a huge explosion during battles before he could get caught up in the blasts. He can even dodge attacks while he is using Gear 3. As Luffy can use Kenbunshoku Haki he can foresee his enemies movements and dodge those attacks quite easily.

Luffy is seen to be able to take in immense amounts of physical damage and is known for his strong durability and willpower due to the rigorous training that he was put through by his grandfather.

Special abilities of Monkey D. Luffy

Devil Fruit

Luffy ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi fruit as a child which gave him the properties of rubber. He is able to stretch any part of his body and he can enhance his body parts around spinning them. As he is made of rubber is is immune to lightning and can't be harmed by blunt attacks. Over the course of years, Luffy has been able to train and develop his skills which has allowed him to create his Gears which are basically special techniques that are related to his devil fruit.

Luffy has a total of 6 gears (Three being subforms of Gear 4) and are divided into four levels. These Gears have become stronger over time and give Luffy huge amounts of power.

Gear 2

Gear 2 was first introduced during the Enies Lobby Arc. In this gear Luffy increases the speed of his blood and due to the rubber nature of his blood vessels and organs, his body can withstand the pressure. This allows his body to pump oxygen and nutrients throughout his body. It also increases Luffy's physical strength and gives him a lot of speed and defensive powers.

Luffy activates this mode by pumping blood throughout his legs to activate the mode throughout his body. Later on he can be seen to be able to activate Gear 2 on a selected body part. By combining his haki and Gear 2, he is able to punch his opponents with speed and force and this makes his fist turn into flames which Luffy named Red Hawk. Later on in the series, his Red Hawk became so strong that he could injure even kaido during their battle in Onigashima.

Gear 3

Gear 3 was also introduced during the Enies Lobby Arc. This mode is activated when Luffy blows massive amounts of air into his thumb and can inflate the bones of a particular body part and make it huge. These body parts are capable of causing damage on a huge scale and can even destroy buildings. His power increases when he combines it with Busoshoku Haki and later on he even combines it with Haoshoku Haki.

At first Luffy used to turn into a child and his fighting abilities were limited temporarily after he used this mode. However, after the time-skip, where he spent two years training, Luffy has managed to negate this side-effect.

Gear 4

Luffy learned Gear 4 during his 2 year training period and was seen using it during the Dressrosa Arc. Luffy activates this mode by blowing into his arm and inflates his muscles and then coats it with Busoshoku Haki. Gear 4 has three forms aka sub forms.

Boundman

This form makes his skin composition like that of a rubber ball which causes him to bounce all the time. Luffy is able to retract his hands and legs which help him unleash devastating attacks and even change directions of his attacks. His defense also increases and the majority of the attacks bounce off him.

Tankman

This form makes Luffy become much bigger and increase his defense abilities. This also allows him to use his body as a weapon and recoil from his enemies' attack and blast them away.

Snakeman

This is the last sub form of Gear 4 where Luffy turns a bit slimmer and focuses more on the offense. This form doesn't have defense abilities like the previous two forms. Despite that, he has a huge increase in attack speed and can change the direction of his attacks so that he can hurt his enemies from all directions.

However, as strong Luffy’s Gear 4 is, he is usually not able to use haki for ten minutes after this mode and using it a lot of times can take a huge toll on his body.

Gear 5

Gear 5 is the recent mode that Luffy activated but this has only occurred in the manga and has yet to be animated. This mode was a result of Luffy awakening his Devil Fruit for the first time since the Blank Era.

In this mode, Luffy has many new abilities like being able to manipulate the shape and size of his body instead of focusing more on hardening his body with Busoshoku Haki. He looks more cartoon-like while fighting. He is able to give his surroundings rubber like properties also which helped him deflect Kaido's Bolo Breath. He is also able to stretch any object he touches. His power has the characteristics of both Paramecia and Zoan-type Devil Fruit.

Haki

Luffy was one of the few people who could use all three types of haki. He knew how to use the Hoashoku Haki, which allows the users to exert their willpower over others.

He can also use the Busoshoku Haki, which allows users to use their spiritual energy to create invisible armor around themselves, giving them offensive and defensive capabilities. He is quite proficient in using it and very skilled at it too.

Lastly, Luffy even possessed the Kenbunshoku Haki, which allows the users to use the sixth sense to sense the presence, strength, and emotions of others. It even gave the user prerogative abilities.
