Yami Yami no Mi in One Piece

Blackbeard was an orphan, but when he was 12 years old, he met Whitebeard and asked to join his crew, to which Whitebeard agreed. In reality, Blackbeard joined the Whitebeard Pirates because he wanted to obtain the Yami Yami Devil Fruit and he thought that joining the Whitebeard Pirates was the best way to obtain the fruit. One day, a new member joined the team whose name was Thatch and he possessed the Yami Yami Devil Fruit, which was the devil fruit that Blackbeard was seeking.

Desperate to get his hands on the Yami Yami Devil Fruit, Blackbeard murdered Thatch in order to obtain the Devil fruit. After doing so, he fled and when Ace got to know about this, he went to search for Blackbeard for revenge despite Whitebeard telling him not to pursue him. Marshall D. Teach then changed his name to Blackbeard and formed the Blackbeard Pirates and they set out on their journey. The crew consists of Laffitte, Van Augur, Jesus Burgess, Doc Q and Stronger.

The Yami Yami no Mi is large, round, and light purple in color. It is made of many small teardrop-shaped components with the usual swirl patterns on them and green leaves which sprout from the top. It resembles a pineapple in some ways or a bunch of oversized grapes.

The major strength of this devil fruit is that it is able to control darkness and its unique gravitational properties. The darkness is shown as a black smoke-like structure that comes out from the user’s body. This darkness is capable of devouring anything that comes in its way and can crush anything. Due to this property, the user can absorb any physical thing or attack by sucking it into the darkness. They can also use it to pull their enemies towards them. This darkness is quite similar to a black hole and can suck anything inside it.

Unlike a black hole, whatever gets sucked into the darkness doesn't get annihilated but everything it has sucked is stored in one place. It is seen that if the user sucks a living being into the darkness, they are able to survive the darkness but they become severely injured and shocked by the experience. Another ability of this devil fruit is that it is able to completely nullify the powers of other devil fruits by just touching the devil fruit user. This applies to all paramecia, logia and zoan types. The logia-type may be affected the most as they wont be able to turn into their respective element. Even if the user uses Busoshoku Haki, they would not be able to get through the nullification ability of the Yami Yami no Mi.

Even though the Yami Yami no Mi is a strong devil fruit, it still has weaknesses. Since the darkness is able to absorb anything, the user is still vulnerable in battle. This is because if the user is not able to absorb the attack in time, they can get injured by the attack.

Even though the Yami Yami no Mi has the ability to nullify the devil fruit powers of other users, it is not perfect. This is because the user must stay physically in touch and remain in contact with the other user in order for the nullification to take place. If the user loses physical touch with the other user, then they will regain their devil fruit powers. Other than that, they have the standard devil fruit weakness that is the inability to swim.

Blackbeard uses his devil fruit powers for combat purposes. He was able to defeat Ace. He uses his devil fruit in two ways. The first way is to spread his darkness throughout the ground and trap his opponents and anything in his vicinity and after that, he absorbs them into his darkness with extreme force. The second way is to focus on the nullification factor of the devil fruit which he combines with his gravity attraction force which pulls his enemies right towards him, and then, he punches them with immense strength.

Blackbeard also has a lot of durability and is tolerable with pain. When Blackbeard took the Gura Gura no Mi from Whitebeard's body, he said that darkness that can reduce anything to nothingness combined with the power of the Gura Gura no Mi can bring destruction to all and this made him invincible and the strongest.

The techniques used by Blackbeard are:

Black Hole

In this technique, Blackbeard spreads his darkness over a large area like a black hole and absorbs everything in his surroundings.

Liberation

In this technique, Blackbeard throws out all of the destroyed remains that his darkness has swallowed all at once.

Kurouzu

In this technique, Blackbeard extends one of his arms towards his enemies and then activates the gravity power of his darkness and pulls them towards him.
