History

When the Tree of Knowledge was first established on this very island, Ohara was a sovereign nation for 5000 years. For millennia, scholars and archaeologists who studied history, a practice that the World Government approved of. Archaeologist Nico Olivia (Nico Robin’s mother) encountered Jaguar D. Saul while traveling off the island in search of information concerning the Void Century. Saul helped her escape and eventually made it to Ohara, where he became friends with Nico Robin.

The government ordered the island’s annihilation via the Buster Call after learning that the researchers were studying the prohibited Poneglyphs and the Void Century. Sakazuki and Kuzan, a close friend of Saul, were two of the Vice Admirals dispatched to carry out the attack. As numerous Poneglyphs also include knowledge concerning the Ancient Weapons, the government used propaganda to demonize the people of Ohara, claiming that they were seeking to use the forbidden knowledge for global destruction. Nico Robin, who was labeled a criminal due to her ability to read Poneglyphs, is the only survivor of Ohara.

Trivia

  • Ohara is credited with drawing inspiration from England in Rurubu One Piece. This distinction is also held by Syrup Village and Foosha Village.

  • The word “Ohara” may have its origins in Old Hara, the oldest tree in the world at more than 5,000 years old.

  • The way the Marines put an end to all of the scholars of Ohara and its knowledge could be a reference to the alleged text-burning in 213 BCE and live burial of 460 Confucian scholars in 212 BCE by the Chinese Emperor Qin Shi Huang of the Qin dynasty. This was said to have destroyed philosophical works from the Hundred Schools of Thought in an effort to further the official Legalism of the Qin governing ideology, much to how the global government advanced the principle of justice.
