When Portgas D. Ace conquered Onigashima three to four years ago, Past Babanuki was stationed there. He, Poker, and Briscola stared in terror as Yamato destroyed the statue of the dragon, which represented Kaidou's might.

Wano Country Arc

Babanuki told Hyo that he should die if he couldn't work for his food as he observed Daifugo punishing him for having meal tickets that he didn't earn in the Prisoner Mine of Udon. Babanuki witnessed Monkey D. Luffy fight Daifugo, and he was astonished by the assault's power despite Luffy's impairment from the Seastone handcuffs. He went quickly to kill Luffy and sneezed an exploding elephant at him. When Queen eventually showed up to speak with Babanuki, the latter informed him of the problems occurring in the jail, including Luffy's ongoing effort to escape. Ultimately, Luffy and Hyo were captured and carried before Queen.

Queen and Babanuki watched Luffy compete in the Sumo Inferno. The following day, Babanuki told Queen that they had brought Kamazo and the kid who had been captured. When Big Mom showed up at the Prisoner Mine and demanded oshiruko, Babanuki attempted to persuade a furious Queen by informing his boss that it would not be wise to engage Big Mom in combat only for food. Big Mom defeated Queen, and Babanuki warned Daifugo not to annoy her. Then, when he requested Kaidou's directions, he discovered that Udon's communications had been cut off. Later, when Luffy took off his and Hyogoro's collars, he was startled.

Queen stood back up and informed Babanuki of his strategy to defeat Big Mom while Big Mom pursued Luffy into the Prisoner Mines. When she returned, Babanuki saw Queen try to attack Big Mom by ramming his brachiosaurus shape into her skull. Although there was no real harm done by the attack, Big Mom did fall asleep right away. Big Mom was placed in Seastone chains, and given large quantities of anesthesia. Then, Queen took Big Mom to Onigashima, leaving Babanuki in charge of the jail.

As soon as Queen left, Babanuki realized Luffy was still unharmed. Babanuki told the prisoners to aid in Luffy's capture as the Beasts Pirates rushed to confront him. Babanuki explained to his soldiers that the voice that called out to Luffy from within a jail was coming from Kawamatsu. Babanuki gave the command for his men to gather into combat position after Raizo had released Kawamatsu. Babanuki commented that the gathering of Kawamatsu, Hyogoro, Raizo, Luffy, Chopper, and Kikunojo seemed a lot like what Orochi had been worried about. He said that he would have to get in touch with Kaidou, but Kikunojo asserted that they would first put an end to him and his troops.

Babanuki ordered the inmates to transfer the Mummy virus to Luffy and his companions as Daifugo fired Excite Bullets at the captives, but Luffy boldly pushed off the infected carriers and sparked the prisoners' spirits. Babanuki tried to employ an Excite Shot the size of a cannonball out of concern that Luffy was inciting the captives to rebel. But just as Babanuki was about to shoot, Luffy's advanced Kenbunshoku Haki allowed him to halt Babanuki by twisting the trunk of his elephant. Then, inside Babanuki, the shell detonated, killing him.

Kurozumi Tama fed a kibi dango to Babanuki when he pulled through. Babanuki misled Queen when under Tama's control by reporting to her that Luffy, Kid, and the other inmates were locked in their cells. Babanuki and the remaining Beasts Pirates at the Prisoner Mine were concerned when an underwater volcano erupted from where Onigashima had previously been on the night of the Fire Festival. The mine's buildings were toppled by the earthquake, and Babanuki screamed at the guards who were preoccupied with a broadcast from the capital. A week later, Babanuki and the other Beasts Pirates were vanquished when Admiral Ryokugyu stormed the Prisoner Mine.

Babanuki is very cruel as the warden of the Prisoner Mine, even telling Hyogoro that if he cannot obtain food by working hard in jail, he should be put to death. He has little sympathy for the convicts and frequently dismisses their misdeeds as unimportant because he and his minions have tremendous influence over them. As seen by the fact that he and his subordinates needed Queen's urging to respond to Luffy's attempted escape, he can be rather dim-witted but takes managing the jail very seriously.

He may be more sensible and level-headed than his commander, as seen by the time he attempted to warn Queen from interfering with Big Mom's meal after the latter insulted and threatened him. He also told his men not to shoot at Big Mom since he knew it would enrage her. When his master gave instructions, the elephant that was emerging from his body peacefully munched on some bananas. He turns nice and obedient to Kurozumi Tama after being domesticated by her, as seen by the fact that he lied to the queen.

Babanuki is a tan-skinned, enormously strong guy with long black hair and a thick black beard. He has two pointed, fang-like teeth on his lower jaw that resemble tusks; this feature looks to be natural since he had them before using SMILE. He has two horns on the top of his head, just like many other SMILE users. He wears dark yellow trousers, a belt with a big circular buckle, purple and golden gauntlets around his wrists, and golden-dotted metal plates on his upper arms. He has a yellow elephant's head on his chest as a result of eating a SMILE fruit.

Babanuki is the warden of the Prisoner Mine and a Shinuchi of the Beasts Pirates. He appears to exclusively respond to his general, Kaidou, and the All-Stars, namely Queen, thus far. Babanuki proved to be incredibly tough by surviving the explosion of the bomb that was impaled into the trunk of his elephant.

Babanuki’s special abilities

Devil Fruit

The Elephant SMILE fruit grants the user the physical characteristics of an elephant. Babanuki developed an elephant's head out of his chest after consuming the Elephant SMILE. Babanuki has command of this elephant head and can communicate with it. He can even launch potent sneeze assaults at his adversaries with it. The Elephant SMILE fruit has the drawback that the sneeze attack cannot be released if the elephant's trunk is restrained. Babanuki would suffer terrible injuries as a result of it backfiring on him.

Elephant Hakkushon

This is a strong sneeze that Babanuki's elephant lets out; it goes far and causes a massive explosion wherever it lands. This blow has enough force to harm Luffy. Cannonballs can also be fired using this method.

Weapon

Babanuki is said to have a weapon called an "Excite Shot" that is 200 times more lethal than the Excite Bullet's Mummy virus. He tried to shoot this with the elephant's trunk, but Luffy stopped him.
