Dalton used to work for Drum Island's previous king, and both of them were concerned about Prince Wapol's behavior. But eventually, the monarch passed away, which gave Wapol, who was a spoilt child, inheritance of the kingdom. The new King Wapol hired Dalton as his guard, but Dalton opposed Wapol's cruel treatment of his subjects. During a Levely, Wapol brought Dalton, Chess, and Kuromarimo to Mary Geoise, where they met King Nefertari Cobra and Princess Nefertari Vivi.
Wapol came up with a scheme to get Hiriluk to the castle in order to capture him. At first, Dalton disagreed with the proposal, but the King disregarded his viewpoint. Hiriluk rushed to the castle, where Wapol, Dalton, and the other guards were waiting for him after word got out that the Isshi-20 was ill. Hiriluk's expression of happiness at the survival of the Isshi-20 and his speech on how men only truly die when they are forgotten touched Dalton.
Hiriluk asked Dalton not to injure his son after noticing Dalton's tears before detonating himself. Dalton stopped Tony Tony Chopper from needlessly doing this and ordered him to leave the castle, when he arrived and began attacking Wapol. When Dalton turned against Wapol, he was overpowered and imprisoned while being repeatedly made fun of by Wapol and others. Wapol left his kingdom when Blackbeard attacked, but Dalton took over and prevented the island from destabilizing, quickly gaining the trust of the people.
When Monkey D. Luffy and his crew arrived on Drum Island in search of a doctor to treat Nami's illness, they ran upon Dalton and a few other men who believed they were on the island to assault it. The pirates were originally angry towards Dalton and his soldiers, but after realizing they were harmless, Dalton took them to Bighorn. After that, Dalton brought them to his place to get warm. When questioned about a doctor, Dalton responded that Kureha, a witch, was the only person who could heal Nami. Sanji and Luffy offered to drive Nami to the doctor.
Dalton warned them about the Lapahns before they went. Dalton then informed Nefertari, Vivi, and Usopp of the Blackbeard Pirates' attack and Wapol's shameful flight. Negikuma Maria then informed Dalton of Kureha's visit to Cocoa Weed. Dalton arrived there in a hurry with Usopp and Vivi but missed Kureha. When Dalton heard that Wapol was back, he instantly returned to Bighorn in the guise of a bison. Wapol was attacked by Dalton when he approached him. Wapol, however, was saved by the Isshi-20. Chess then caused serious wounds on Dalton for defending the villagers from his arrows.
An approaching avalanche forced Wapol and his two goons to flee. The snow completely covered Dalton. Until Zoro arrived and overcame the troops, the villagers tried to dig him out, but Wapol's soldiers were standing in their way. The people succeeded in rescuing Dalton, and the Isshi-20 attended to his injuries. Dalton decided to travel to Drum Castle and defeat Wapol when he had somewhat healed. Usopp made an attempt to drag Dalton to the Castle but was too weak. The team was instead shown an underground ropeway that would take them to the mountain's summit by Zoro, who intervened.
Dalton was getting ready to use explosives to blow up the castle as they approached it. Luffy fought Wapol and sent him flying off the island before they reached the summit. When Dalton arrived at the castle, he immediately recognized Chopper. Dalton received medical attention from Kureha and had a nap in the castle. Dalton then observed the cherry blossoms bloom in Hiriluk after the Straw Hats had left. When several locals told Dalton and Kureha about Luffy's bounty and Portgas D. Ace's message for Luffy, they were watching the snowfall.
Dalton was chosen by the people to rule the newly established Sakura Kingdom. Kureha was summoned from the castle by Dalton so that he could show her the Straw Hats' newest bounty when it came.
Two years later, Dalton was looking at the Lapahns being used as peacekeeping forces when he read about the Straw Hats in the papers.
Later, news of the Straw Hats' success at Dressrosa reached Dalton and Dr. Kureha.
As Levely's scheduled arrival time came near, Dalton was surprised to learn Kureha would be coming with him.
Dalton read about Luffy's adventures at Totto Land in a newspaper when it came. Later, Dalton and Kureha showed up at Mary Geoise. Wapol was criticizing Vivi when Dalton intervened and intimidated him out of the room. He reconnected with Vivi and struck up a friendly conversation with Rebecca about Luffy. Dalton stood next to the Neptune Family while Donquixote Mjosgard made a pledge to Neptune that he would protect Shirahoshi after stopping Charlos from kidnapping him. Later, Dalton and the other kings and queens entered the meeting room to start the Levely. Dalton scowled at Wapol as he sat down.
Dalton is a courageous warrior and a kind guy who genuinely cares about the residents of Drum Island. In exchange, the residents of Drum have come to trust him. He is remarkably honorable, despising his servitude to Wapol as king and clearly crying for Dr. Hiriluk upon his passing before pleading with Chopper to survive in order to carry out Hiriluk's ambition of rescuing the realm.
He leads a straightforward and modest life as the new king of Sakura Kingdom, refusing to reside in the palace and choosing instead to dwell among the locals on Drum Island. Dalton says that he likes the Bighorn rice and chestnut dish. When explaining a topic of conversation, he has a propensity to provide people with absolutely irrelevant information that they never asked for.
Dalton has slicked-back black hair, and a goatee, and is an imposingly tall man. He possesses armor plates on his arms, which are kept on his forelegs while adopting his full-bison form, and a long, white fur-lined, green tunic. In order to combat the bitter weather on Drum Island, he occasionally wraps his head with a hat that is lined with green and white fur and has ear flaps. He also always wears heavy boots.
He has an extra-large spade in a scabbard that hangs from his back as his preferred weapon. He was depicted in Chapter 0 with more royal armor, and his hair was separated in three rather than one place. He started to wear a fur-lined cloak with the kingdom's symbol on it as the country's king.
Dalton is a skilled and successful combatant. He was so powerful that defeating him required Wapol to use every weapon in his arsenal. He is swift enough to catch Wapol off guard and decapitate him in one strike, and he has enormous strength that is boosted by his Devil Fruit power. He is also incredibly tough, having lived despite taking several arrows from Chess and being buried under an avalanche.
Dalton also had strong leadership qualities, as seen by the years he spent preventing chaos in the Drum Kingdom after Wapol and his soldiers had left the area before being elected king by the people.
Dalton consumed the Ushi Ushi no Mi, Model: Bison, a Zoan-type Devil Fruit that gives him the ability to change into a bison and into a hybrid form that resembles a minotaur. His hybrid form, which he mostly uses in battle, has enough strength to block Chopper's heavy point. His quadrupedal bovine condition lets him run at a considerably greater pace than his usual human state, making it excellent for transportation.
The major benefit of this fruit, however, does not appear to be its enhanced power but, rather, the speed. He demonstrated his incredible speed by skillfully dodging the gunshots fired at him by Wapol's troops. Dalton employs Fiddle Banff in his hybrid form, which enables him to spin his sword and rush the opponent with amazing speed while slicing through anything in its path. When facing several foes at once, this strike is quite effective.
The primary weapon of Dalton is a spade, a big pole arm with an enormous blade. However, it is not fashioned like other spades. It is somewhat odd in shape, being a long double-edged sword-like polearm with a circular tip rather than a sharp point. The overall design resembles an oar, however, the head is made of metal rather than wood. With the help of his Devil Fruit abilities and his skill with a sword, Dalton was able to quickly dispatch a huge number of troops by attacking at breakneck speed and slicing anything in his way.
Dalton had worked for Wapol's father and was close enough to him to serve as a confidant, listening to his complaints about Wapol's supposedly problematic behavior as a prince. Dalton told Wapol that the only reason he had ever tolerated Wapol's reign was because of his obligation to his father.
Dr. Kureha and Dalton get along well; despite her contempt for him, she accepts him as the ruler of Drum. He doesn't express resentment or complain about what she did; rather, he seems to adore her for her contribution to Wapol's eventual defeat. Wapol hates her for being a rebellious doctor, but Dalton is happy to let her do as she pleases.
Dalton has a positive view of Chopper and holds him in the highest regard for having preserved the Drum Kingdom. Six years ago, Dalton recognized what Chopper was attempting to achieve and stopped him from fighting a pointless war against Wapol and his army to avenge Hiriluk's murder.
Dalton admires Princess Vivi, who as a young girl shocked him. Her behavior was what initially prompted Dalton to criticize his own king, Wapol. He compared her with Wapol and remarked on how, despite her young age, she was well aware of her political position and how one small event might have turned into a full-scale conflict between the two kingdoms. Dalton was shocked by the activities of the Straw Hat Pirates after realizing who she was after they left, and how someone like her would team up with pirates like them. Two years later, when they both attended the Levely, Dalton defended Vivi when Wapol approached her and started making fun of her.
Vivi and Luffy begged Dalton to aid Nami, and despite his initial hostility towards them since they were pirates, he eventually relented and let them pass through the Village. Dalton started to realize they weren't as bad as he believed as they were on the road when he saw their genuine care for their sick buddy Nami. After Luffy beats Wapol and frees the Kingdom from Wapol's rule, it is shown that his sentiments have transformed into appreciation for the young crew. Since that time, Dalton has maintained track of the Straw Hats, as seen in the Post-Enies Lobby Arc, when Dalton was relieved to learn that they were still alive.
Wapol's former loyal servant Dalton initially followed his king's instructions out of devotion to and obligation to Wapol's father. Dalton, in contrast to the other ministers of the kingdom, had a conscience and, after seeing Hiriluk's bravery and compassion, refused to continue serving as Wapol's obedient guard, openly criticizing him in front of everyone. After Wapol left Drum Island, Dalton had a burning resentment for him and wouldn't let him restore the island to its previous state.
When they ran into each other again at Mary Geoise two years later, Dalton stopped Wapol from making fun of Vivi. Wapol becoming king of another nation shocked Dalton, who described it as vile. Dalton forcefully stated that they were now equals while changing into his bison hybrid form while Wapol shouted at him by calling him a servant.
Dalton, Chess, and Kuromarimo, collectively known as "The Three Officers" of Drum Kingdom, were previously fellow slaves under Wapol and were thought of as equals. Contrary to Dalton, Chess and Kuromarimo never voiced any objection to Wapol's brutal rule, claiming that it was important to show authority to keep the people of Drum Kingdom under control. Chess and Kuromarimo view Dalton as a traitor today since he stood up to Wapol.
Even though Dalton just had a short meeting with Hiriluk, he managed to have a lasting effect on him. Dalton was very impressed by Hiriluk's heroism and sacrifice, which inspired him to resist the oppression of his monarch. Dalton carried out Hiriluk's instructions to defend Tony Tony Chopper from the troops of the kingdom by persuading the reindeer to depart in support of Hiriluk's wishes.
