Gedatsu met Chopper once the survival game began, but because he could not see since his eyes were rolled up into his skull, he assumed that Chopper might be invisible. He attempted to introduce himself as one of the priests, but he did not speak loudly enough to be heard, leading Chopper to believe that he was a complete idiot.
Gedatsu almost fell into one of the Swamp-cloud traps as he was detailing how he had placed them in his domain, but much to Chopper's surprise, he soared out using a milky dial. Later, Gedatsu demonstrated to Chopper how to use the 'Swamp cloud burger' maneuver, which makes it hard for the victim to escape once hit, since the more they move, the deeper they sink into the cloud. Chopper fled as Gedatsu attempted to do the same to him, and he later made an effort to save a sheep from danger in the swamp fog.
Gedatsu infuriated the sheep by making jokes about its situation, which led to the sheep wanting to join Chopper in battle. However, Gedatsu used his Jet Dial boosted punch to send the sheep flying before it could even attack, startling Chopper enough for him to flee. When Chopper paused, he made the decision to eat a Rumble Ball and jump away rather than risk falling into a swamp cloud. Gedatsu quickly caught up with him and attacked. Gedatsu severely hurt Chopper when he was using Brain's place to analyze the Priest's weak spot, but Chopper still managed to find Gedatsu's weakness. Despite suffering severe injuries, Chopper was able to remove one of Gedatsu's dials. Gedatsu was unable to regulate his speed in the air and soared without direction since he was unaware that one of his shoes had been removed.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Chopper launched his greatest attack at Gedatsu, who he successfully grounded in one of his own swamp-traps. He triggered his last Milky Dial shoe in an attempt to flee, but as he was upside down, he merely soared downhill to the Blue Sea.
Gedatsu was defeated and dropped to the ground on Ukkari Hot-Spring Island, a place full of holes. He met Goro, an elderly resident of the island, and decided to move in with him and assist in the construction of a hot spring island resort. The couple eventually located the Dirt Boss, and when Gedatsu beat it, they were granted its cooperation in digging tunnels. They discovered hot water while excavating, but the Forest Boss showed up and complained to their commander, so Gedatsu also had to take care of him.
It was discovered that Goro is actually Koza's uncle when one of the tunnels went to Alabasta. The Forest Boss had already built the resort when they got back to Ukkari. Gedatsu, much to his surprise, ended up working there as a clerk. As a result of this lucky circumstance, Gedatsu was the only priest who was not sent to a desert cloud when Enel was defeated.
When Luffy was captured on the street screens by the casino's security cameras, Gedatsu briefly made an appearance at Gran Tesoro.
The group of pirates during the Pirates Festival included Gedatsu. He was observed playing Baccarat while taking in the festivities.
One of the strangest characters in the series is Gedatsu, who has a number of peculiar behaviors that he is completely unaware of. Every single time he has to be warned, he frowns. His attitude is in sharp contrast to his very intimidating looks. Gedatsu's strange instances of forgetfulness and clumsiness make him appear inept or downright foolish, which significantly hampered his overall performance as the leader of his own Ordeal and gave it the best chance of surviving. Some of these actions are:
His eyes were rolling towards the back of his skull, making him blind.
He was making an attempt to talk when his bottom lip was impaled.
Forgetting to breathe for a moment.
His arms are incorrectly crossed (he does not have them meet), causing them to comb against one another frequently.
He only thinks about his talents while discussing them (or even himself), forgetting to speak.
He accidentally hits a friend rather than an opponent with an assault.
Using a window rather than a door to enter a home.
He was supposed to be bathing in a drum, but instead, he was heating it up by crouching next to it.
Failing to blink.
Standing on top of a wall rather than the ground while digging.
Putting food in his ears instead of in his mouth.
Facing the opposite direction as everyone else.
Gedatsu is still a highly serious, brutal, and aggressive fighter despite these tendencies. Additionally, he did not appear to care if his troops were murdered, even by himself, and thought it was a disgrace to be saved by the enemy, displaying an odd type of warrior's honor.
Gedatsu is a tall guy with a dark complexion and his hair is done in a strange way with upward-pointing tufts or dreadlocks that extend from ear to ear. He has a normal set of Birkan wings. He is seen wearing a purple jacket and a pair of trousers, along with black gloves and shoes that had Milky Dials put in them, enabling the priest to fly. He is also seen wearing a pink shirt and a scarf that resembles a tie in blue. He wears a thick, white tissue belt around his waist with a red circle that resembles the Japanese flag in the center of it.
Gedatsu was the priest in charge of putting trespassers through the 50% survival rate Ordeal of Swamp. Gedatsu floods the whole battlefield with swamp vapors as a part of his Ordeal of Swamp so that if the opponent falls in, they can't escape and suffocate.
Gedatsu fights the enemy with the use of dials that are concealed on his body. He can fly thanks to the Milky Dials on his shoes. The Dials he uses can operate outside of Skypiea and at ground level, which was helpful for him after he crashed-landed during the Skypiea Arc.
Gedatsu possesses the Kenbunshoku Haki. With the use of this ability, he can foresee what his enemies are going to do just before they act, giving him time to respond.
Due to their competitiveness over the execution of criminals, where the first to complete a kill is considered the strongest, he was not particularly friendly with Shura, Ohm, and Satori. He also had a bad relationship with the Divine Soldier, who always went with him and let him know when his strange behavior was getting in the way of his goals.
Gedatsu became friendlier and helped Goro build a hot springs resort after being banished from Skypiea to the Earth below.
