Germa Kingdom in One Piece

The Germa Kingdom is the only sea-traveling kingdom in the world and a former World Government member. It is renowned as the Kingdom of Science. It served as the capital of the Germa Empire which was established around 300 years ago as a result of the Vinsmoke Family’s conquest of the North Blue. The kingdom is ruled by Vinsmoke today and his army of Germa 66 Underworld provides military support.

Vinsmoke Judge, the ruler of the kingdom, made a deal with the Emperor Big Mom in exchange for the Germa Kingdom’s cutting-edge technology in an effort to retake control of the North Blue. He also attempted to seal the deal by marrying his estranged son Sanji to Big Mom’s daughter Charlotte Pudding.

The Germa Kingdom was once a member nation of the World Government, and as such, enjoyed all the rights and privileges of an affiliated kingdom, including the rights to participate in Levely events. The royal family of the kingdom also wielded influence over the judicial system and had the power to alter the bounty system and give orders directly to the Marines. However, they were stripped of their privileges following the Totto Land event.

However, based on Judge’s words, Germa’s participation in the World Government has long been threatened by its controversial activities, and as a result of their most recent actions, he anticipates that they will soon lose their right to attend the Levely. True enough, as a result of the Germa Kingdom’s failed attempt to form a coalition with Big Mom, the government severed all connections with them.

History of Germa Kingdom

The Germa Empire, which encompassed the entire North Blue for 66 days, was at the center of the Germa Kingdom about 300 years ago. Since its loss, the ruling family of the Kingdom has made significant efforts to regain its empire, with the reigning King commanding Germa 66 in the infamous Conquest of Four Nations, he was seen standing atop victorious North Blue rulers. However, the specifics of the battle are unknown.

At some point in the past, Judge wed Sora, making her the queen consort of the Germa Kingdom. Twenty one years ago when the kingdom was still located at North Blue, Sora gave birth to the kingdom’s four princes, including Sanji, and she also gave birth to Vinsmoke Reiju, the only princess of the kingdom. Some time later, Sora became seriously ill from drugs she took before giving birth to her sons, and spent the rest of her life bedridden in the hospital ward until passing away.

Sanji was raised in the Germa Kingdom until the age of eight, when Judge subjected his children to a rigorous training schedule and kept track of their development. Sanji spent the final six months of his life in Germa in the dungeon of the royal palace, where his father had ordered him to be held as a means of completely erasing Sanji from his life. The rest of the Kingdom, including Judge’s children, were informed that Sanji had died in a shipwreck, and a state burial for him was organized as well.

Thirteen years ago, Germa 66 agreed a contract to invade and conquer the island of Cozia in East Blue. It was during this time when Reiju assisted her younger brother Sanji to escape the Kingdom as it crossed the Red Line from North Blue to East Blue by releasing him from prison. Sanji was caught by Judge as the former attempted to flee, and Judge allowed Sanji to go as long as he never used the Vinsmoke name ever again. With Reiju’s assistance, Sanji fled safely on a cruise ship that was docked off the coast of Cozia.

Whole Cake Island Saga/Arc

The Vinsmoke and Charlotte families formed a political alliance after Sanji left the Germa Kingdom to start a new life in the East Blue. As a part of this agreement, the marriage between the third son of the Vinsmoke Family and the 35th daughter of the Charlotte Family was arranged to unite the two bloodlines of the two families.

However, the wedding was not held until thirteen years later because the Vinsmoke Family was unable to locate their third son, Sanji, who had been living in Baratie and kept a low profile. Sanji was able to return to his homeland thanks to the connections of the Big Mom Pirates, particularly after Capone Bege threatened him with the repercussions of his mentor’s gruesome murder for declining to attend the wedding. The Germa Kingdom started gradually converging on Lake Aprico on Whole Cake Island prior to the wedding.

A few days before the wedding, Sanji traveled back to his homeland, where he met his father, younger brother, and sister for the first time in 13 years. Judge urged Sanji to settle their differences through battle after rejecting both Yonji and Reiju’s efforts to persuade him to accept the planned marriage. After the duel, which concluded in a courtyard outside the Vinsmoke castle, Judge told Sanji why they had allied with Big Mom, and Reiju attached exploding wristlets that would explode Sanji’s arms to force him to cooperate with the wedding.

The day before the wedding, Vinsmoke Ichiji and Niji completed their assignment on Broc Coli Island and then left the Germa Kingdom. While dining in their throne room, the reunited Vinsmokes started talking about politics, but the conversation rapidly turned into a fight between Sanji and the other members of the family. After the meal, Sanji found out that Cosette (the head of the culinary staff for the royal household) was severely beaten inside the castle. Sanji, who vowed to exact revenge on Niji, ran across Yonji, who showed him the location of the facility housing Germa 66’s clone army, and they were soon joined by Ichiji and Niji, who then attacked Sanji along with Yonji.

After the attack, Reiju found a beaten Sanji in the lab. Before taking Sanji to his room, she gave the Germa scientists the instruction to leave him in her care. The entire royal family was greeted by their cheering citizens as they left for Whole Cake Chateau for the pre-wedding gift exchange ceremony after Reiju had attended to Sanji’s wounds.

Later on, it is revealed that the wedding was all a part of Big Mom’s scheme to kill the Vinsmoke Family in order to gain access to the kingdom’s cloning technology. However, the Vinsmokes (apart from Sanji) were able to successfully flee back to their country after the assassination plan was foiled during the wedding ceremony. Nusstorte’s squad tried to catch up with them, but they were completely defeated, and soon, Ichiji gave the order for Germa’s ships to depart after Niji duped Mont-d’Or into disclosing the whereabouts of the Straw Hats.

A few hours later, the Big Mom Pirates’ fleet surrounding Cacao Island was attacked by the forces of Germa Kingdom, which allowed Luffy and Sanji to escape. Judge directed his men to attack the pursuers at sea while his children attacked the army on land.

After ensuring their safety aboard the Sunny, Judge attempted to understand what Luffy saw in Sanji, whom he believed to be a useless failure. He was displeased when Luffy mistook his criticism for praise for the chef. The Vinsmoke siblings were hurt in the conflict with the Big Mom Pirates, who had brought anti-Germa bullets with them. The Big Mom Pirates prevailed ultimately as a result.

Germa 66 was getting ready to retreat when the Straw Hats finally left Totto Land. However, Big Mom reached Cacao Island before they could leave. Later on, the Germa Kingdom managed to escape from Whole Cake Island.

The World Government banished the Germa Kingdom after learning of their latest effort to join forces with the Big Mom Pirates.

Geography of Germa Kingdom

Vinsmoke Reiju made the first reference to the Germa Kingdom, calling it “a nation without soil.” Later, it is revealed that its “territory” consists of platforms surrounded by railings that are built on the shells of enormous snails that resemble Den Den Mushi. Those snails are powerful enough to climb the Red Line and appear to be unaffected by the salty water.

Depending on the kingdom’s current activities, these ships usually move individually but they can be interlocked as they come together to form the kingdom’s “correct shape.” As a result, depending on how many of the kingdom’s ships are assembled at once, the size and boundaries of the kingdom’s territory are constantly changing.

Architecture of Germa Kingdom

The Germa Kingdom buildings have a castle-like appearance; each one is a tower, turret, keep, or entire castle. The externally rounded walls of (some of) the structures are complemented by the curving conical spires that cap several of the structures.

The entire country, including the “ground” of the platforms suspended from the kingdom’s ships, appears to be made out of bricks and brick tiles, with the exception of trees and other types of vegetation. The masts and sails of the ships are lowered to allow different sections of the buildings to be connected back together as well when the numerous ships are reattached back into the greater kingdom.

Although the architecture of the kingdom appears to be mainly made up of brick, there are a number of rooms and laboratories that are located within various structures that have a clearly futuristic appearance; such rooms are typically made of metal.

Landmarks at Germa Kingdom

The German Kingdom has multiple locations with distinctive rooms and amenities in each of them. Following are the locations at Germa Kingdom:

Vinsmoke Castle

The royal castle of the Vinsmoke Family serves as the kingdom’s most prominent landmark and the hub around which other buildings are assembled. The kingdom’s flag is flown from the top of the center turret, which features five tall turrets. It typically rests atop a collection of 36 platforms, some of which are capable of separating.

Throne Room

The throne room is one of the biggest rooms in the castle which is prominently decorated with militaristic furnishings including a large spread-winged eagle behind the throne itself. Behind the bird is the flag of the Germa Kingdom and on either side of the throne are two enormous sea charts. A chandelier and dark vertical banners carrying the number “66” hang for its high ceiling that runs the length of the room.

A table surrounded by numbered chairs is located in the room’s center, at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the throne. Each Vinsmoke child has a certain seat at the table assigned to them, which corresponds to their assigned number.

Sanji’s Room

A portrait of Vinsmoke Judge from the Conquest of Four Nations can be found in one of the castle’s exceptionally vast and luxurious halls, where Sanji stayed in when he returned to the Kingdom. It has a large window and curtains that open to a balcony with views of the kingdom and is located in the castle’s main turret. The room is decorated with other fixtures and furnishings including potted plants, huge chairs, multiple cabinets and drawers, mirrors, drapes, candelabras and chandeliers.

Medical Ward

The medical ward is situated on the outskirts of the castle grounds. The only known patient there was the late queen of the kingdom, Sora, who received care from Époni. Sora was frequently visited by Sanji and Reiju.

Soldier Stock Depot

Germa 66’s scientists work at the Soldier Stock Depot, a facility deep within Vinsmoke Castle. It has a multitude of numbered, liquid-filled capsules with a Germa 66 Clone Soldier inside each one. The scientific advancement used in the cloning procedure was a recent one made by Judge and the World Government scientist Vegapunk. It is most likely a recent addition to the castle.

The laboratory is extremely secure and off limits to the general public except for the kingdom’s scientists and members of the Vinsmoke Family. Even the royal children were not granted permission when they were very young.

Dungeon

The castle has a dungeon, which is where Sanji spent six months as a kid before he was freed by Reiju to help him escape. It can be accessed after descending a long flight of narrow stairs.

Yonji Castle

“Yonji Castle” is the name of one of the kingdom’s independent towers, and a residence to Vinsmoke Yonji, the fourth prince. His citadel is built from pieces of his own ship which are later assembled on the Germa Kingdom platform.

Inhabitants of Germa Kingdom

Sanji is now the Straw Hat Pirates’ cook and one of the Senior Officers of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. He was the fourth member to join the Straw Hat Pirates’ crew, and fifth overall.

Trivia

  • The Germa Kingdom, like many other nations in the One Piece universe, draws inspiration from several real-world nations and cultures:

  • With its castles, towers and strongholds, the kingdom’s architecture is reminiscent of that of Medieval Europe. It resembles the Lvneel Kingdom’s architecture, which is also seen in the North Blue.

  • The Nordic Cross, which is seen on the flags of several Nordin countries, is depicted on Germany’s flag. The Norwegian and Icelandic flags share the same design as the flag of Germany.

  • Germany, notably Nazi Germany, which featured golden eagles and unique uniforms as insignia and was a militaristic and aggressive nation, may also be the inspiration for the Kingdom’s name Germa and their military ideology. The Vinsmoke Family’s exclusive focus on battle and their desire to take the North Blue in order to rebuild the Germa Empire are parelleled by the Nazi’s promotion of the idea of a Greater Germany.

  • The huge bird in the throne room of the kingdom may refer to:

  • The Indonesian flag’s national symbol is the Garuda Pancasila. The symbol, as its name suggests, features a garuda, Vinsmoke Judge’s nickname.

  • The Reichsadler, a product of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime. The attire resembles the Reichsuniform as well.

  • Additionally, Germa’s emblem, which is on display in their throne room, is probably a nod to the emblem of the terrorist Shocker from the Kamen Rider anime and manga series, which takes its cue from Nazi Germany.

  • Coincidentally, in some regions of the former Yugoslavia, yeast is referred to as germa, which fits with Sanji’s focus on cooking.
