History

Past

20 years before the current storyline begins, Shiki cut off his legs to escape from his confinement. Shiki was on Level 6's rafters when Hannyabal entered and approached him, asking whether he had seen Shiki's weapons.

Then, a startled Hannyabal yelled for assistance from Magellan, but not before yelling that he wanted a promotion.

Impel Down Arc

Before being told of Vice Admiral Momonga and Warlord of the Sea Boa Hancock's arrival at Impel Down, Hannyabal was informed about Buggy's escape and the Devil Fruit's abilities. They were welcomed by Hannyabal, who also told them that Magellan was on Level 4 and gave Domino the go-ahead to do a body search on Hancock. The guards informed Hannyabal of the feed loss after Hancock scared Domino and the Surveillance Den Den Mushi.

Hannyabal then proceeded to check on the women. Hancock de-petrified Domino and the women found the examination before leaving the room after Monkey D. Luffy had disrobed and concealed in the space. Hancock expressed her disapproval of the Seastone handcuffs, but Hannyabal explained that they were required under the prison's regulations.

He then led Momonga and Hancock to a lift that would take them to Level 4. Hancock collapsed because she misunderstood Luffy's answer when Hannyabal told her about the heat on Level 4 and the screaming she would hear from the other floors before they descended; Hannyabal was not aware of the exact cause. They talked about Magellan's daily schedule while they waited in the Warden's office.

After Magellan came out of the restroom, Hannyabal lamented the Warden's diet of poison before telling him that Momonga and Hancock wanted to go to Portgas D. Ace. Hannyabal sat in the Warden's chair, thinking that it had been his one day, while Hancock scolded Magellan for inhaling deadly gas. Hannyabal answered the call on the Warden's Den Den Mushi, but Magellan breathed poison at him and stole the chair and receiver for himself.

Impel Down had been broken into for the first time ever, according to the guards, which Hannyabal described as a catastrophic catastrophe and attributed to Magellan. Hancock was brought to Level 6 by Hannyabal, Magellan, Domino, and Momonga, who also presented her to Ace and Jinbe. Hannyabal was handcuffed by Magellan for overdoing the introduction. Hancock's presence caused the other convicts to become noisy, and Hannyabal participated in the yelling by pleading for Magellan to step down.

Hannyabal ran aside to avoid being poisoned as well, thus he missed hearing Hancock's warning to Ace when Magellan used his Hydra method to strike out at the convicts for their insulting remarks about Hancock. Hancock and Momonga went back to the surface, while Magellan and Hannyabal went back to the Warden's office.

Magellan received information regarding Luffy's break-in, his whereabouts, and the names of his accomplices: Buggy, Galdino, and Bentham. When Magellan complained that he hadn't received an update sooner, Hannyabal noted that Hancock had kept him preoccupied. Magellan instructed the remainder of the prison's soldiers to assemble on Level 4 while Saldeath and the Blugori dealt with the protesters on Level 2.

Hannyabal was astonished when Magellan added that if Luffy and his companions reached Level 4, he would personally put them to death. When they were notified that Luffy and his companions had missed the boiling pond and instead plummeted down the well while they were waiting at the bottom of the stairs between Levels 3 and 4, Magellan divided the gang into three and left Hannyabal to watch over the stairwell to Level 3.

In order to put the blame on Magellan, Hannyabal considered allowing Luffy and the others to get past him, but the Warden threatened both of them before leaving to locate Luffy. In order to put the blame on Magellan, Hannyabal considered allowing Luffy and the others to get past him, but the Warden threatened both of them before leaving to locate Luffy. Shortly later on, Hannyabal was found. The guards inform him when he is freed that Buggy, Galdino, and Bentham made their way down to Level 5. The only thing they discovered was a bloody copy of Hannyabal's stolen names.

To Hannyabal's surprise, he discovered from the guards' report that if the four invaders had not been devoured by the wolves but instead managed to flee, then not only Magellan but also Hannyabal himself would be in danger of losing their officer posts. Later, when Luffy, Iva, and Inazuma are seen leaving the monitor room to go to Level 6, he is shown being astonished.

Then, when Sadi-chan arrives with the Jailer Beasts, he commands a guard to alert the Level 6 jailers to be ready for battle. The guard is also instructed to set off all the traps in the passageway leading to Level 6 and to alert Magellan and all levels of this finding. The guard wonders if Hannyabal is a fraud given this abrupt change in attitude.

Hannyabal was in command of the jail while Magellan was preoccupied with Ace's transfer. He finds out during his time as leader that Jinbe and Crocodile were both set free for allies by Luffy, Inazuma, and Ivankov. Fearing for his job, Hannyabal issues an order for all jailers to gather on Level 4, where he intends to confront the escaped inmates himself. However, when he learns that Buggy and Galdino are causing another riot on Level 2 and that an army led by Iva, Inazuma, and Bentham is composed of prisoners who were thought to have been lost forever, he is unsure of what to do.

Hannyabal discovers that Blackbeard and his crew are occupying Impel Down while still unsure of how to handle the present predicament. With two problems on his hands, he finds it difficult to decide. To the surprise of the other jailers, he casually suggests whether they should shut themselves in the monitor room and have some snacks.

Once Magellan has informed him that the disturbance on Level 2 has ended and given him the go-ahead to hold out on Level 4 until he arrives, he calls him on Den Den Mushi. Hannyabal applauds the warden while feeling ironically relieved. With two problems on his hands, he finds it difficult to decide. Once Magellan has informed him that the disturbance on Level 2 has ended and given him the go-ahead to hold out on Level 4 until he arrives, he calls him on Den Den Mushi. Hannyabal applauds the warden while feeling ironically relieved. Even yet, after being pummelling and covered in blood and despite the jailers pleading with him to quit for his own sake, Hannyabal persists in trying to stop Luffy. Hannyabal then goes on to explain why "scum" like Luffy has no business being free.

He goes on to claim that Impel Down exists to keep bad people locked away and guard the vulnerable people outside because innocent people are scared and terrified by the sheer existence of pirates. He argues that destroying it would cause greater anxiety, thus he wouldn't allow Luffy to pass and elude capture.

Luffy declines once more, claiming that Ace is important to him. Hannyabal laments the unwillingness of certain individuals to listen. Blackbeard then crushes Hannyabal under his feet and mocks his ideals, saying that he could explore the entire planet and yet come up with no solution. The Bazooka Unit then starts to disappear into Blackbeard's darkness.

Magellan immediately poisons Blackbeard and his crew and dispatches them after they make an effort to fight him. He then recognizes the bloodied and bruised Hannyabal and expresses gratitude for his long suffering. Impelian Magellan departs Admitting that Hannyabal is the sole deserving heir, he kneels down to him and begs him not to pass away.

Hannyabal was unaware of hearing that compliment, though. The guards are then instructed by Magellan to provide Hannyabal with the medical care he needs for the injuries Luffy and Teach caused.

From the Decks of the World

After the time skip, it is shown that Hannyabal, although appearing to have put on weight, has finally fulfilled his aim of becoming the warden of Impel Down.

Personality

Hannyabal has a tendency to assert that he is the owner of everything, only to have to retract that assertion later on. He acts in this way because he is ambitious. Additionally, he exhibits "Freudian Slips," which frequently reveal his previously noted ambition and his peculiar style of humor. Hannyabal is adored by the guards because he frequently enters the Freezing Hell of Level 5 without weapons and is almost fully nude to demonstrate to the inmates just how strong he truly is.

He is emotionally more solid than other characters and is able to keep his composure even while around Boa Hancock, untouched by her charm. Despite this, he exhibits signs of being easily seduced by attractive women as he reveals his actual intentions to Hancock.

Hannyabal cares more about his personal status than the safety and welfare of the jail. Nevertheless, he is only prepared to let convicts escape if they are relatively harmless, and he expresses real worry when strong prisoners escape, such as Crocodile and Jinbe.

Hannyabal may appear to be careless most of the time because of his desire to dismiss Magellan, but if the situation becomes dire, especially if he faces being fired himself, he may become serious. Even those who are familiar with him may be surprised when this sudden transformation takes place.

Even though he frequently lets his desires get the better of him when he senses that the safety of civilians is in jeopardy. He turns out to be a thoughtful individual who chooses to become a jailer in order to preserve the lives of innocents by keeping criminals behind bars. He was also the only senior jailer who was never depicted abusing the prisoners or taking pleasure in it.

He became a jailer because of this other part of himself, and the amount of willpower he exhibits in this frame of mind is similar to Luffy's own. He will force himself to remain alert and prevent dangerous criminals from fleeing even when he is utterly exhausted and on the verge of passing out. Unlike a lot of marines who follow Absolute Justice, his philosophy regarding pirates like Crocodile, Jinbe, or Luffy who are capable of immense destruction is quite distinct.

He detests the glorification of pirates since everyone with such reputations became criminals by violating the law. Therefore, if strong criminals manage to escape, the world's population will get alarmed knowing that dangerous criminals are still at large and can even escape from Impel.

Appearance

Hannyabal is a huge guy with a pot belly who resembles a hybrid of the devil and an Egyptian pharaoh. He wears a nemes, the striped headdress worn by pharaohs, with his hair coming out from within. His brow ridge is formed like horns, and his chin is shaped like a pharaoh's fake beard.

Particularly, the shape of his face makes it resemble a Hannya mask. He wields a pitchfork, another typical image associated with the devil, and has wings that resemble those of a demon. Hannyabal was seen wearing the standard militaristic white uniform that normal guards wear. He still wore the nemes and the bat-like wings, but he also wore a cap over the former.

After the time skips, he now look a lot like Magellan, but without the horns and looks to have put on a lot of weight as well. Hannyabal had a fat childhood. A leaf skirt and a pair of black shoes were all he was wearing. He's shown as a fire dancer. As a child, Hannyabal was a bit of a fat kid. He just wore the leaf skirt, along with a pair of black sandals.

Hannyabal’s abilities strengths, and fighting style

Hannyabal is in complete charge of Impel Down as the current warden. He is one of Impel Down's strongest enforcers, second only to Magellan in terms of strength only to any of the four Jailer Beasts. He won't fight unless there is a serious emergency, like an escape attempt by a prisoner from Level 5 or Level 6, according to one theory.

If not, he won't do anything and will hand the task off to Magellan or the Jailer Beasts. Even after absorbing a direct blow from Buggy's Muggy Ball, he effortlessly killed both Buggy and Mr. 3 without a mark on him. On the other side, he appears to be recognized by the guards as a strong enforcer and combatant.

Hannyabal was afterward shown to have replaced Magellan as Chief Warden after the two-year time gap, supporting Magellan's claim that he was the only one qualified to follow him as Chief Warden of Impel Down.

The fact that Hannyabal can tolerate enormous amounts of heat in Level 4 while wearing the same loincloth through the Freezing Hell suggests that he may have the resilience to extreme temperatures as well. He can survive some of Luffy's Gear Second assaults and recover from them because of his high physical resistance.

Hannyabal’s special abilities

Weapons

Hannyabal has been seen carrying a pitchfork, although he has never been shown utilizing it in combat. Using a katana on either side, he can use it for a variety of assaults and, most interestingly, can spin it erratically while igniting flames to dissuade enemies.

His swordsmanship is demonstrated by the skill with which he can handle a two-bladed weapon that has the capacity to harm both the user and the enemy.

Relationships

Impel Down Staff

Due to his apparent "lack" of duty, Hannyabal frequently opposed Magellan, the chief warden, and would not hesitate to reprimand him for things like ignoring the intruder's call on Luffy while distracted by Hancock. Hannyabal wanted to get rid of Magellan so that he could make a better chief warden in his place.

Hannyabal would publicly express his wish to see Magellan fail or die in the performance of his duties even when he was not experiencing Freudian Slips. He would occasionally even start yelling or speaking loudly in Magellan's hearing range, which would prompt Hannyabal to rephrase his speech when he realized he had gone out of line too far and more frequently result in Magellan silencing him with his voice.

However, each time Magellan poisoned him, he appeared to act foolishly as though he were going to die but just took a few minutes to fully recover. Despite their opposing leadership differences, Magellan says he has his entire trust and that no one else save himself is capable of leading Impel Down. He appears to have a good reputation among the staff, and the jailers are impressed by his bravery in challenging circumstances.
