History

Past

When Kawamatsu was a kid, the ship he was on sank, so he and his mother went to Wano Country. The humans attacked them with stones when they asked for help. His mother told him that fishmen suffered discrimination before she passed away, and even then, Kawamatsu pretended to be a kappa.

Inuarashi and Nekomamushi found Kawamatsu at Kuri Beach after the two minks walked to Wano. The three had been captured and tortured by several humans until Kozuki Oden arrived and saved them. They then returned with Oden to Kuri as his retainers. As they were short on cash, Kawamatsu tried to rob Yasuie but they got caught. Yasuie didn't punish them; instead, he let them keep the money and urged them to use it to improve themselves for the sake of Oden and Wano Country. They followed his advice and trained to become worthy warriors. They, later on, traveled to the Flower Capital.

Kawamatsu and the other remaining retainers watched Kuri after Oden, Izou, Inuarashi, and Nekomamushi left Wano with the Whitebeard Pirates. The retainers welcomed Oden as he and the two minks arrived back in Wano with the Roger Pirates, but Kozuki Toki cut them off before they could convince Oden to stay in Wano rather than continue his journey with Gol D. Roger. The retainers got angry at Kurozumi Orochi for misusing his position as shogun. While everyone else went to the Flower Capital to face Orochi, Kawamatsu, and Inuarashi remained in Oden Castle. Oden Castle was attacked by several Beasts Pirates, but Kawamatsu and Inuarashi fought them off. After completing his journey, Oden arrived back in Wano, where the retainers greeted him and informed him of the situation there.

Oden looked like a fool and lost the respect of the majority of Wano's people after not killing Orochi, but the retainers stuck with him. Oden decided that enough was enough and decided to destroy Kaido. The retainers happily marched below him to Onigashima. The gang met Kaidou and his team in the Udon area on their route to Onigashima. Shinobu joined the samurai in the after battle. Unfortunately, the samurai were eventually overpowered. Then, Oden and the Nine Red Scabbards were imprisoned in the Flower Capital and given a three-day boil-alive sentence. After the 10 prisoners were all taken to the place of death, Oden struck a bargain with Kaidou. The retainers were going to follow Oden into the pot of hot oil when Oden took a board and commanded them to stand on it while he held them over the pot.

Oden survived the hour, telling his retainers why Wano Country had been shut and asking them to let him in by opening Wano's boundaries. Oden managed to survive the hour, but Orochi called for a firing squad to put Oden and his guards to death. Oden told his retainers to broaden Wano's borders once more before throwing them far from the fire. After Oden died the Scabbards ran away in sorrow. An army of soldiers was pursuing the retainers as they fled back to Kuri. While Denjiro and Ashura withdrew from the group to fight with their enemies, Inuarashi and Nekomamushi were captured. The remaining retainers learned that Oden Castle had been burned down by the Beasts Pirates. In order to protect the Kozuki Family blood in the event that their plan failed, Toki sent Kin'emon, Kanjuro, Raizo, and Kikunojo 20 years into the future with Momonosuke while Kawamatsu stayed with the 6-year-old Hiyori.

Kawamatsu jumped into a water channel so the couple could get away unnoticed when the castle was surrounded by foes. He took care of Hiyori and constantly tried to make her feel better, even if it meant going without food. Hiyori left a letter for Kawamatsu before she left. Kawamatsu cried and tried to find her across Wano after finding it and reading it. He went into Ringo's cemetery to find another reason for living and took the swords from the tombs to arm the rebels for the day Momonosuke and his retainers came back. He was able to persuade the fox Onimaru to support him in his mission while also joining forces with him to preserve the cemetery in spite of the fox's initial refusal to do so. Onimaru was the guardian of the cemetery, protecting it from grave thieves.

Every time Kawamatsu chased the grave thieves out because there weren't enough swords in the cemetery, he had them give up their weapons. To hide his identity, Kawamatsu also made up the name "Gyukimaru". He eventually got away while stealing at the Flower Capital.

Following his arrest, Kurozumi Orochi had him locked up in a chamber where he was only allowed to eat toxic fish with no bones. His stomach had churned every day for the past thirteen years from eating fish, but the discomfort was nothing compared to his guilt at not being able to save Oden.

Wano Country Arc

When one of the guards tried to attack Monkey D. Luffy after being transported to Udon, Kawamatsu spits a fishbone at the guard. Later, Dobon's fight with Luffy and Eustass Kid was seen by him. Raizo was in front of Kawamatsu's cage when the ninja yelled out to him as Luffy and Hyogoro were taken before Queen. He identified himself and inquired about Momonosuke's well-being. He then requested Raizo's assistance in getting away so he could take part in the important Fire Festival conflict against the Beasts Pirates. When Raizo was discovered, he was forced to escape inside a smokescreen. When Kawamatsu saw how much trouble Luffy had been making, he hoped that he wouldn't let Hyogoro die. Kawamatsu's cell suffered damage when Queen and Big Mom got into a fight. Kawamatsu shouted out to Luffy to get everyone's attention as Babanuki turned the convicts against Luffy.

Several guards tried to assassinate Kawamatsu after Babanuki said his name, but Kawamatsu resisted them by spitting fishbones up until Raizo gave him the key to his shackles. After successfully escaping from a few more soldiers, Kawamatsu entered a clearing and joined Raizo, Kikunojo, Hyogoro, Tony Tony Chopper, and Luffy in their fight against the Beasts Pirates. While fighting the Beasts Pirates, Kawamatsu and his companions were quickly surrounded by infected prisoners carrying the Mummy virus. Kawamatsu noted that Babanuki was getting ready to shoot something while Luffy convinced the prisoners to stop. Then, after Luffy defeated Babanuki, he was impressed. Kawamatsu made the decision to depart temporarily from Luffy's squad once the jail takeover was over in order to take care of some business. Before the Fire Festival, he promised to reunite with them. Later, at the Oihagi Bridge, Kawamatsu and Hiyori were reunited when Kawamatsu broke up a fight between Roronoa Zoro and Gyukimaru.

The reunion, though, was cut short when a group of Beasts Pirates showed up to get revenge on Gyukimaru for taking their weapons. Gyukimaru retreated as Kawamatsu and Zoro fought the Beasts Pirates in battle. Kawamatsu reunited with Hiyori after the Beasts Pirates had been defeated and informed her about his experiences after they had split up. He related the tale of the fox companion Onimaru and Shimotsuki Ushimaru to her. At a doorway leading to an underground room where Kawamatsu stored a stash of weapons, they caught up with Zoro. Kawamatsu reached the hidden room and alerted Kin'emon about the weapon stash via Smart Tanishi. Later, he returned to the outdoors and protested Hiyori's offer to give Zoro Enma in exchange for Shusui's return. He also didn't believe Zoro when he said he had battled Ryuma's corpse. After that, Hiyori informed Kawamatsu and Zoro that she would not be attending them to meet with their friends since she did not want to interfere with their war plans. Kawamatsu and Zoro joined a meeting with Kin'emon at Amigasa Village after leaving Hiyori in a safe place. The group at Amigasa Village was then informed that Hiyori is still alive. Kawamatsu was thrilled to see Zoro calming Enma after Tenguyama Hitetsu entrusted him to Zoro.

On the day of the raid on Onigashima, Momonosuke, Kin'emon, Kanjuro, Raizo, Ashura, Inuarashi, Shinobu, and Kikunojo marched with Kawamatsu to the rendezvous spot. When the gang ultimately arrived at the meeting spot, neither their ships nor the others were there. Despite this significant setback, the Scabbards were still determined to carry out the raid since they knew they would not have a second opportunity. Momonosuke was left behind at the dock as the Scabbards left. The other Scabbards were surprised when Kanjuro admitted that he was the mole, causing Kin'emon to question whether there could be a traitor among them. Following Kanjuro's explanation of his actions, Kin'emon decapitated him in a rage, only to discover that it was a duplicate and that the real Kanjuro had stayed on the shore and had kidnapped Momonosuke in order to bring him to Onigashima.

The Scabbards were shocked to see Kyoshiro fighting one of the Beasts Pirate's ships when he arrived. They were surprised when Kyoshiro revealed that he was Denjiro and that he had set the rebels gathering at Port Habu free as well as the captives in the Flower Capital. To their relief, a sizable fleet of comrades from the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance arrived at Port Tokage to start the raid on Onigashima. Kawamatsu returned to the seaside and attacked Kanjuro. Meanwhile, a Beasts Pirates ship with long-range weapons attacked the alliance, and Jinbe helped the rebels. The Scabbards and Law went over their plan to enter Onigashima once again. The Heart Pirates and the Scabbards, with the exception of Kin'emon and Denjiro, traveled to the back of Onigashima within the Polar Tang after the Straw Hats overpowered the guards at the torii gates. Nekomamushid was arranging to meet them in Onigashima and got in touch with them along the route. Law teleported to Onigashima's back entrance with the Scabbards when the submarine was close enough, where they were joined by Marco, Nekomamushi, and Izou.

The group was greeted by Kanjuro and a group of Beasts Pirates after Marco departed to investigate a shadow he noticed at sea. While the remainder engaged the other foes, Kikunojo engaged Kanjuro. After defeating Kanjuro and the Beasts Pirates that were with him, Kin'emon and Denjiro instantly joined Kawamatsu's party. They then made their way into Kaidou's castle, engaged in a battle to reach the Performance Stage, and attacked Kaidou from every angle. The Scabbards were able to hurt Kaidou while falling to the lower floor. While Jack and an army helped Kaidou off the roof, the Scabbards saw the Sulong minks fighting the attackers. The Scabbards continued their struggle with Kaidou after the minks' efforts had made Jack and his soldiers unable to fight. Kaidou continued the battle in human form, first overpowering the Scabbards and then leaving them helpless. When the Scabbards eventually recovered and woke up, the mysterious person had already disappeared.

When Ashura revealed it as a fake Oden and began fighting it, Kawamatsu knew it was Kanjuro's creation. While the real Oden attempted to blow itself up with the Scabbards, Ashura sacrificed his life to free the false Oden from the corpse and save the other survivors. After that, they set out to look for Momonosuke and Kanjuro. The remainder of the gang discovered Orochi and Fukurokuju setting flames all throughout the castle. They made fun of Orochi before he transformed into another form and began to attack, but they hacked off his head and fled, believing he had perished. Raizo then stayed behind to fight Fukurokuju. Along the journey, Denjiro separated from the group. Despite Denjiro's advice to be cautious, Hiyori approached Orochi to respond to her, and when she saw her, Orochi died in the flames.

Nekomamushi began by saying that Momonosuke had arrived on the island safely and that Luffy had fought Kaidou. When Momonosuke tells the citizens of the Flower Capital that Kaido's rule is ending, the Scabbards help Hiyori in calming them. The Scabbards bow down before Momonosuke when he emerges in human form. As Momonosuke made his views known to the entire nation and the new shogun was declared, Denjiro broke down in tears. Later, when Denjiro and the other Kozuki Retainers noticed Admiral Ryokugyu approaching, they immediately hurried outside to stop him from entering the Flower Capital. Later, when Denjiro and the other Kozuki Retainers noticed Admiral Ryokugyu approaching, they immediately hurried outside to stop him from entering the Flower Capital. Ryokugyu declared his intention to pursue Luffy. In the midst of yet another fight, the admiral was forced to flee the nation. Denjiro and the rest bid the Straw Hats farewell in the early morning hours several days later.

Personality

Kawamatsu in One Piece
Still from the anime

Kawamatsu is very kind. An example of his kindness was when he fed a hungry Onimaru with what little food he had left after barely feeding himself. His mother insisted that he pose as a kappa in order to protect himself from the people of Wano Country, therefore he takes the job very seriously and never introduces himself as a fish-man but rather as a kappa.

Kawamatsu is a large puffer Fishman who looks a lot like a Kappa. He has webbed hands and light yellow-green skin with a round body and blush marks on his cheeks. He also has a beak-like structure with extremely long and wide orange hair. He is seen wearing a green kimono with a red cape, tan sandals, and a yellow sash tied around his waist with a tan kasa and a dark diamond on top.

Kawamatsu’s abilities, strengths, and fighting style

Kawamatsu is 10 times stronger than the normal person and is much more powerful underwater. He appears to have extraordinary physical strength, even by fish-man standards. He has the ability to spit up fish bones with such power and rapidity that they may badly hurt someone. Kawamatsu had incredible stamina since the Beasts Pirates fed him poisoned fish every day for thirteen years, yet he never died or even became sick like Tama, which surprised them. However, after being released, Kawamatsu did throw up a lot. While starving himself, he was seen feeding Hiyori. He is a quick swimmer because of his past, which helped him to smuggle Hiyori out of Oden Castle. Kawamatsu has the ability to quickly and precisely spit out fish bones, possibly transforming them into lethal weapons.

Relationships

Mother

Kawamatsu was very close to his mother and protected her at any cost. Kawamatsu obeyed his mother's final orders and has continued to refer to himself as a kappa to this day out of respect for her.

Nine Red Scabbards

Kawamatsu got along well with his fellow retainers and members of the Nine Red Scabbards, and gladly served with them under Kozuki Oden. Following Oden's death, Kawamatsu prioritized rescuing Oden's daughter Hiyori and split away from the other scabbards. After the time travel, Kawamatsu was happy to see Raizo again and was amazed that he hadn't aged a day. He was as horrified by Kanjuro's treachery as the other Scabbards. Despite Kanjuro's betrayal, Kawamatsu and the other Scabbards continued their attack on Onigashima and even joined forces with Izou, another of Oden's retainers.

Kozuki Family

When Kawamatsu was a little child, Kozuki Oden fed him freshly prepared food and protected him from being killed by judgmental people. Kawamatsu was very grateful for this. Kawamatsu afterward became one of Oden's most devoted supporters. Despite his mother's final advice to keep his ethnicity a secret to shield himself from persecution, he had enough faith in Oden to tell him that he was a Fishman. Kawamatsu has a strong sense of duty to Oden's children.

Shimotsuki Yasuie

When he was a kid, Kawamatsu attempted to rob Yasuie of his money with the help of the Nine Red Scabbards, but he was caught. Yasuie had no ill will towards him or his fellow retainer soldiers. Instead, he freely gave them the money and encouraged them to act like true retainers to help their lords Oden and Wano.

Onimaru

Onimaru first met with Kawamatsu when he went after some Beasts Pirates. The tombs were guarded by him and Onimaru. Upon finding that Kawamatsu is still alive, Onimaru cries tears of happiness.

Monkey D. Luffy

When Luffy was transported to Udon as a prisoner, Kawamatsu first met him and defended the latter when a Beasts Pirate tried to assault him for disrespect. As Kawamatsu continued to watch Luffy, he was very moved by Luffy's sympathy for Hyogoro as well as his courage in standing up to the Beasts Pirates. Kawamatsu convinced Luffy to inspire other prisoners to rebel by announcing the Kozuki Family's revolution when Luffy was set free and wanted to launch a rebellion. He then gladly joined Luffy in getting ready to battle the Beasts Pirates.

Roronoa Zoro

Zoro and Kawamatsu first met when the latter was battling Gyukimaru to take back Shusui. Kawamatsu strongly protested when Hiyori handed Zoro her father's treasure Enma in favor of Shusui, even though Zoro had claimed to have battled Ryuma. Kawamatsu was full of respect for Zoro when he boldly chose to embrace Enma as his new sword despite how difficult it was to learn.

Beasts Pirates

Kawamatsu resisted his captors and stubbornly remained tied up in his cell for the duration of his 13 years in the prisoner mines. He wasted little time after being set free in launching an attack on them with his reunited friends.

Kurozumi Orochi

After spending many years in Udon jail, Kawamatsu was excited to see Raizo again and declared his intention to join the fight against Orochi. Orochi also gave the Beasts Pirates the command to feed him poisoned fish for the previous thirteen years in order to murder him gradually and painfully.

Kurozumi Kanjuro

They were initially friends and allies for years before Kanjuro's true colors were revealed. After learning that Kanjuro was an enemy, Kawamatsu made a failed attack on him in an effort to save Momonosuke.
