Kozuki Momonosuke in One Piece

Kozuki Momonosuke in One Piece.
Kozuki Momonosuke in One Piece. One Piece manga panel.

Kozuki Momonosuke, the current shogun of Wano Country, is the elder brother of Kozuki Hiyori and the son of the late daimyo of Kuri, Kozuki Oden, and Toki. He is also the grandson of the previous shogun, Kozuki Sukiyaki.

When Kin'emon told Sanji that he came to Punk Hazard to save his "son," it was when he first mentioned Momonosuke. His clan name was revealed when Kin'emon discussed his true ancestry, and his given name was made known when the samurai inquired whether the kidnapped children in the Biscuits Room had seen him.

28 years ago, Momonosuke was born when his parents were at sea with the Whitebeard Pirates. Even though Momonosuke was legally the shogunate's successor after Oden, the Kozuki Family was overthrown by the Kurozumi Family during Oden's travels, and Momonosuke was the target of assassination attempts by Kurozumi Orochi's government.

When Momonosuke was 8 years old, Oden was put to death. Orochi and Kaidou started an all-out war to wipe out the Kozuki bloodline. Toki sent Momonosuke 20 years into the future with a few of his retainers to keep him safe.

Momonosuke reappeared and headed to sea with his men to gather friends for a planned war against Orochi and Kaidou. Momonosuke pretended to be the son of his retainer Kin'emon to hide his identity. Momonosuke gradually understood and accepted his position as the head of the Kozuki Family and their allies throughout their journey, return to Wano, and the decisive battle with Kaidou's army.

Momonosuke had his retainer Shinobu use her Juku Juku power to age his body by 20 years so that he would be more useful during the battle. The Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance won this battle, and Momonosuke was duly elected shogun with the support of all Wano inhabitants. He would later become known as one of Wano's finest leaders.

Momonosuke’s Background

Past

Kozuki Oden, the patriarch of the Kozuki Family and the daimyo of the Kuri region of Wano at the time, and his wife Kozuki Toki welcomed Momonosuke into the world on board the Moby Dick during Oden's second year as a member of the Whitebeard Pirates. He sailed with the Whitebeard Pirates for his first two years of life.

Oden chose to help Gol D. Roger on his last adventure some 26 years ago, sometime after the birth of Kozuki Hiyori. Momonosuke, his parents, and his sister then boarded the Oro Jakcson. Toki fell ill after the Roger Pirates' arrival to Fish-Man Island. Momonosuke then stayed behind in Wano with his mother and sister once the crew arrived in Wano Country.

Toki and her kids rose to fame in the Kuri region when Toki overcame her sickness. Kin'emon and a few of his fellow retainers travelled to the Flower Capital about six months before Oden completed his journey to face the despotic Shogun Kurozumi Orochi. Beasts pirates launched an assault on Oden Castle in the meantime.

Kawamatsu and Inuarashi successfully chased the pirates away, but Toki was hurt while defending Momonosuke. The family welcomed Oden back to Wano after his long absence. Raizo was instructed to remove Momonosuke and Hiyori from the room after Oden learned about Orochi's abuse of authority at Oden Castle. Only then was Oden informed of the Beasts Pirates' attempted attack on his family.

Oden's family continued to adore him despite his acting foolishly and losing the respect of most of Wano's people for five years after failing to kill Orochi. Momonosuke, Hiyori, and Toki remained in Oden Castle while being protected by Shimotsuki Yasuie and his men twenty years ago as Oden and the Scabbards battled the Beasts Pirates in the Udon region. Momonosuke questioned his mother on the day of Oden's execution as to why his life was in jeopardy. Toki responded to his query, and Momonosuke broke down in tears.

Momonosuke was inside Oden Castle with his sister and mother when it was set on fire by the Beasts Pirates following Oden's execution in the Flower Capital. Momonosuke was threatened by Kaidou, but instead of killing him directly, he decided to leave him in the burning castle. Toki sent Momonosuke and the retainers 20 years into the future when they came back.

They explored Wano Country after arriving in the future and were surprised by how much everything had changed. However, they found people they could still rely on and started formulating a strategy to retake Wano Country. When they departed Wano Country, the Beasts Pirates spotted Momonosuke and his retainers, who had also decided to go to Zou to enlist the assistance of the Mink Tribe.

They were shipwrecked on their way to Zou; as a result, they lost contact with Raizo and floated ashore at Dressrosa. Momonosuke observed Donquixote Doflamingo's savagery while he was in the nation as he tormented a gladiator for putting on a subpar performance at the colosseum. Later, Doflamingo's troops pursued the samurai. Before Kin'emon could find him, Momonosuke hid inside a ship, and the ship sailed away.

Momonosuke was brought to Punk Hazard and put in the Biscuits Room with the other kids. He was generously offered food and candy by the other kids. Still, he refused to accept "another's charity" and remained unidentified. He entered Vegapunk's former lab after sneaking out of the Biscuits Room. There, he beheld the scientist's artificial Devil Fruit in a glass cabinet. He smashed open the case and ate the fruit because he was starving.

A Ginko soon discovered him inside the space and spoke to him after finding him. Momonosuke explained to her that he had to get away and had a task to complete. He listened to her as she spoke until they heard the approaching guards. She instructed Momonosuke to follow suit and then fled to hide.

Momonosuke had already subconsciously changed into his dragon shape when the guards arrived. He ran away from the guards, saw himself in the mirror, and shouted in amazement when he realised he was the dragon. He overheard Caesar Clown discussing the newest group of kids and how they were only valuable for roughly five years of research before they would perish as he was running past his office. He intended to notify the other kids but decided to wait in the dump instead, where he got stuck.

Punk Hazard Arc

Later on, after the pirate also fell into the trash, Momonosuke ran across Monkey D. Luffy. Momonosuke thought Luffy must have been requesting someone else as they had never met before, even though the pirate seemed to recognise his name. A clearly furious Luffy requested Momonosuke to grip onto him as he planned to escape the rubbish dump after Momonosuke informed him of what was occurring on Punk Hazard.

With what Luffy had said, he felt comforted and assumed that Luffy was not a pirate. Momonosuke, however, abruptly experienced a hallucination involving Donquixote Doflamingo and began to fly. He was being held by Luffy as he floated up.

They went to Building R when Luffy was notified of Caesar Clown's location. Momonosuke then observed the altercation between Luffy and Caesar and became enraged upon seeing the person who had used his experiments to sentence his slaves to death. Later, after witnessing Luffy's initial assault on the insane scientist, he voiced amazement at his gigantic strength.

Caesar's subordinates subsequently opened the air vents to let the gas in. Luffy asked Momonosuke to care for Brownbeard when Caesar absorbed his weapon, Shinokuni, before preparing to use a devastating Gear 3 attack. After Caesar was defeated, Momonosuke and Luffy joined the other Straw Hat Pirates, the kidnapped kids, and the G-5 Marines. Momonosuke showed grief when he noticed that Kin'emon had been terrified by the deadly H2S gas after everyone had boarded the train car in the escape route.

Kin'emon eventually emerged from his shell and reverted to his usual form. After the two of them embraced, Momonosuke changed back into his human form and was given clothes by Kin'emon. The two eventually consumed Sanji's dish, despite Momonosuke's initial reluctance, and everyone shared a feast.

The Straw Hats and Trafalgar Law boarded the Thousand Sunny alongside Momonosuke and Kin'emon. Momonosuke listened as Law discussed Doflamingo's association with the criminal underground and the fact that Kaidou is his most important customer. Momonosuke was startled at the mention of Kaidou's name, and he unconsciously changed back into a dragon, surprising Kin'emon.

Dressrosa Arc

Momonosuke enjoyed dinner with Kin'emon and the crew after Law instructed Doflamingo to pick up Caesar at Green Bit. The crew was informed by Momonosuke and the samurai about their shipwreck, drift to Dressrosa, and Momonosuke's separation from the samurai. The Thousand Sunny headed towards Dressrosa after that.

The crew started the next stage of their operation after getting off the ship. Luffy considered turning Momonosuke into a dragon to fly. Momonosuke remembered someone reaching for him and requesting his name, but he refrained from complying. The two got into a short argument after Luffy questioned whether he feared heights before Kin'emon broke it up. Momonosuke was assigned to the group that would watch after Sunny, as the group was then divided into three teams.

Later, Momonosuke played Shogun alongside Brook, Tony Tony Chopper, and Nami. They heard unusual noises and a voice coming from the men's room before Brook began singing. Giolla of the Donquixote Pirates and a few of her lieutenants had invaded the ship when the voice was heard.

She transformed Nami, Chopper, Brook, and Momonosuke into abstract works of art using her Devil Fruit power and the men's room. They fled to draw Giolla away from the ship, but Giolla changed the ship into artwork despite their efforts, making it unable to sail.

Later, Giolla imprisoned Chopper, Momonosuke, and Nami in a fatal painting that would suffocate them over ten minutes. Brook acted detached as if he cared more about the art being made than the safety of his pals. The skeleton requested that Giolla turn his violin and cane back to normal to bring music to their demise. When Giolla agreed, Brook used "Drawing Song Hitoyogiri" to slash her, defeating her and causing her ability to fade, returning everything to normal.

The crew then launched a coordinated assault on Giolla to ensure her total disablement, which made Momonosuke feel good about his power. Giolla was later taken hostage by Law, giving Nami's team enough time to flee via Coup de Burst. Momonosuke recalled the first time he met Doflamingo, which left a dreadful impression on him after sailing far away from Dressrosa.

The Sunny and Luffy's crew had a conference call when Roronoa Zoro finally contacted Luffy. Sanji decided to go back to Dressrosa to carry out their attack on Doflamingo after bringing everyone up to date and explaining the reality of the situation there.

The group on the Sunny heard the battle in the Corrida Colosseum through the Den Den Mushi and was startled to learn that an Admiral was also there in Dressrosa. The Big Mom Pirates, searching for Caesar Clown, interrupted the return journey. Nami believed Momonosuke to be one of the three "cards" at risk, and she advised a second-course correction to protect him from Doflamingo. In agreement, Luffy ordered the Sunny's crew to go to Zou.

The next day, Momonosuke and the others made it to Zou, barely avoiding the Big Mom Pirates. Momonosuke, Nami, and Brook were running across dangerous terrain at Zou when they were abruptly met by Sheepshead and his allies. Then a rain eruption from the elephant's trunk occurred, and a torrent washed them away.

Since Momonosuke and Brook were Devil Fruit users, Nami had to save them and carry them to a log. The three of them were attacked by Sheepshead, but Brook stopped him, and Momonosuke supported him. Then, they were spared when Sanji showed up and drove Sheepshead away. Eventually, Momonosuke heard Chopper yelling for them. Following Caesar's successful neutralisation of the poison gas, Momonosuke's team set to tending to the injured minks, rescuing them from certain death.

Zou Arc

Momonosuke stayed in his room and avoided interacting with the minks while the Straw Hats got along well with them. He met up with Kin'emon and Kanjuro once more as they travelled to the Mokomo Dukedom until they finally arrived. When they got to Kurau City, the Straw Hats swiftly caught up with them and made a valiant effort to keep them hidden.

To the horror of the Straw Hats, the samurais showed themselves when they witnessed Inuarashi and Nekomamushi fighting. The Mink Tribe welcomed the samurais, contrary to what Straw Hats had anticipated, and informed them that Raizo was safe. While talking to Kin'emon, Inuarashi and Nekomamushi got into another argument.

Momonosuke stood up and pleaded with them to end their argument. The two rulers complied out of respect for Momonosuke, whom they acknowledged as their lord. Then Kin'emon disclosed that Momonosuke's real father is the head of the Kozuki Family and that he is not actually Momonosuke's father. The samurais and the Straw Hats were taken to a covert location in the Whale Forest, where Raizo hid after Inuarashi and Nekomamushi declared a truce.

Momonosuke permitted Nekomamushi to reveal the background of the Kozuki Family and their involvement in developing the poneglyphs after Robin deciphered the red poneglyph that Raizo was tied to. Momonosuke's retainers broke down in tears as Kin'emon disclosed that Kozuki Oden had been killed by Kaidou to save them, explaining that Momonosuke had never received his family's understanding of the poneglyphs.

Kin'emon begged Luffy to help them after the samurais disclosed Oden's desire to open the Wano Country to outsiders and defeat Kaidou and the shogun of Wano Kurozumi Orochi. According to Luffy, who declined, the request should be made by Momonosuke. Then Momonosuke vowed to take on Kaidou and defend his loved ones. Momonosuke bowed and respectfully requested Luffy's assistance. Luffy granted his request after recognizing his resolve and the formation of the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance.

The alliance decided to split up and reunite at Wano Country after discussing how to beat Kaidou. Law consented to use his submarine to transport the samurais back to Wano Country. As soon as they were out of the Whale Tree, they noticed Zou trembling and heard Zunesha sobbing.

Momonosuke saw Jack and his fleet via Zunesha's eyes as everything trembled around them. The elephant's voice ordered him to give it an order when he heard it. Then, Luffy persuaded Momonosuke to order Zunesha, claiming the elephant should listen to his voice. Momonosuke heard this and told Zunesha to send Jack on his way. After Zunesha sunk Jack's fleet, Momonosuke went to sleep.

Momonosuke decided to remain on Zou once Zunesha became calm to learn why he was the only one who could communicate with it and to find out if it knows the Kozuki clan. At the appropriate time, Inuarashi assured him he would return Momonosuke to Wano. Everyone, except for the Straw Hat men who remained at Zou, were startled to see Luffy jump off Zunesha with his group as the Sanji Retrieval Team left.

Wano Country Arc

Momonosuke eventually joined Kin'emon's group at the ruins of Oden Castle after travelling to Wano with Inuarashi. Later, when they arrived at the ruins, he was reunited with Luffy, Nami, Sanji, Chopper, and Brook. The samurai revealed their plot to raid Onigashima during the Fire Festival and overthrow Kaidou and Orochi to the Straw Hats. The group then witnessed Kaidou in his dragon form arrive in Kuri to pursue Luffy and Law. Kaidou then destroyed the castle ruins with a fireball, but Shinobu intervened to save everyone.

Later, Tama questioned Momonosuke about his sister, Hiyori, as he honed his swordsmanship close to Amigasa Village. Hiyori was still alive, in Momonosuke's opinion, but they would not be reunited until the war ended. That evening while strolling through the woods, Momonosuke, Tama, Chopper, and Kikunojo came across an amnesic Charlotte Linlin on Kuri Beach.

When the company arrived in Udon the following day, Linlin broke into the Prisoner Mine. Momonosuke and Tama were instructed to wait outside while Kikunojo and Chopper followed her. Tama, however, made Momonosuke sneak inside with her as the Beasts Pirates shut the main gate.

After he and their allies had successfully freed the prison, they got back together, and while Momonosuke quarrelled with Luffy, he was made to appear in front of the liberated inmates. The inmates' faith in the Kozuki Family's return was restored, and they bowed to Momonosuke.

The Straw Hats and Kozuki Family retainers assembled at Amigasa Village the following week to discuss their action plan, and Momonosuke went back there with Kikunojo and Raizo. Kawamatsu confirmed Hiyori's survival and Momonosuke praised Zoro for saving her.

Momonosuke turned down the blade Ame no Habakiri that Tenguyama Hitetsu had received from Oden for the time being. Then he watched as Zoro took Enma, Oden's other sword. Momonosuke, Shinobu, and the other Red Scabbards travelled towards Tokage Port to prepare a day before the raid.

But they didn't find any of their allies in Tokage Port when they arrived. Momonosuke requested that the Scabbards not embark on their own voyage to Onigashima, but they insisted that this plan could not be changed and urged him to endure while they made every effort to pay back their obligation to Oden.

Momonosuke was captured unexpectedly thanks to Kanjuro, a spy for Orochi and had sent a sketch clone of himself onboard the boat with the other Scabbards. Following the arrival of Denjiro and the allies, Kanjuro summoned a crane and soared towards Onigashima with Momonosuke. Momonosuke gave the alliance the order to move forward without bothering about Kanjuro as he made fun of his parent's legacy and cowardice.

The youngster was then exhibited on the Performance Floor of the Skull Dome while being bound to a crucifix. The Emperor asked Momonosuke for his name and offered to spare him if he denied being Oden's son after Kaidou explained his New Onigashima Project and killed Orochi. With courage, Momonosuke proudly proclaimed his name and ancestry.

When the Scabbards and Izou arrived, they fought Kaidou before he could put him to death. Shinobu tried to release Momonosuke after Kaidou and the Scabbards moved their battle to the Skull Dome's roof, but King saw her and threw her away. Sanji, however, used his Raid Suit to get Momonosuke back and then took off flying.

Momonosuke and Shinobu came across Yamato after landing. They fled from Yamato when he introduced himself as Oden. Later, Sasaki's battalion attacked the two, but Yamato intervened to save them. When the latter questioned who he was, Yamato repeated his commitment to guarding Momonosuke and identified himself as Yamato.

Momonosuke began to cry when Yamato gave him Oden's journal and explained it. Momonosuke and Shinobu listened as Yamato continued talking about his relationship with Ace.

A group of Beasts Pirates made an immediate attempt to enter the storage. Momonosuke hid beneath Yamato's garments while Yamato and Shinobu struggled to escape. Yamato asked Momonosuke how he was doing as Shinobu, and he moved forward in the Right Brain Tower. Momonosuke claimed that even though everyone saw him favourably, he still considered himself weak and dumb.

The group contacted Kin'emon while hiding in a first-floor crawlspace. Yamato then decided to separate Momonosuke and Shinobu from the fighting and warned Momonosuke to stay away from Marys, saying that he would use a dummy of Momonosuke as a decoy. Momonosuke then read Oden's journal. Momonosuke informs Shinobu that he came to the decision that he must not die after reading Oden's notebook while inadvertently being monitored by a frog named Mary.

Kin'emon and Kikunojo arrived at the crawlspace shortly after and tried to aid Momonosuke. At that moment, Kanjuro, following Kin'emon and Kikunojo covertly, entered the crawlspace pretending to be Oden. Momonosuke was delighted to see the man he thought was his father, but Kin'emon hid his eyes when Kikunojo denounced him as a forger and advanced on Kanjuro.

After defeating Kikunojo and removing his disguise, Momonosuke was upset to meet Kanjuro. Kaidou unexpectedly came through the wall into the crawlspace after Kin'emon defeated Kanjuro, shocking Momonosuke. Kin'emon is subsequently severely injured by Kaidou, forcing Momonosuke to call out his name. Shinobu immediately grabbed him and started running.

Shinobu used her magic to knock down the wall they were up against as Kaidou moved in to assault them, and she and Momonosuke leapt off the side of Onigashima. They successfully landed on the Wano mainland by Shinobu using her kite. Momonosuke sobbed once they touched down and yelled Kin'emon and Kikunojo's names. Later, at Tokage Port, Momonosuke and Shinobu reunited with Luffy and the Heart Pirates.

To become stronger and grow into a more enormous dragon, Momonosuke urged Shinobu to use her magic to age him into an adult. Shinobu warned him that changing him from a toddler to an adult would be permanent. In the end, Shinobu granted Momonosuke's request and gave him a twenty-year age increase, making him twenty-eight. He immediately changed into his dragon form, now the same size as Kaidou, and consented to accompany Luffy to Onigashima.

When they arrived at the location, Momonosuke, who was still terrified, finally opened his eyes when he heard that Luffy had seen Kaidou and flew towards the Emperor, enabling Luffy to fight Kaidou. Momonosuke summoned the confidence to reintroduce himself and assert once more that he is the person who will lead Wano as shogun as Kaidou transformed into his dragon form.

Before Luffy launched his second attack on Kaidou, he urged Momonosuke to use his fangs as a weapon against Kaidou. Momonosuke recalled his previous ambush at Oden's castle and his close call to death at Kaidou's hands, finally finding the courage to live up to his name and bite Kaidou in his dragon form.

Luffy asked Yamato to assist Momonosuke after Kaidou and his Haki clashed, so Yamato hopped on his head. Yamato explained how dragons fly by making and grasping clouds as they fall together. They rushed back to the island and saw that it had started to crumble since Kaidou's powers were decreasing as Momonosuke practised the skill.

After that, Yamato left Momonosuke alone to manage the explosives. When he was first left alone with the task, he worried, but then he reminded himself of all the lives at risk. He concentrated on building up the clouds one tiny chunk at a time, eventually producing enough to encircle the entire island. Since his clouds alone could not keep the island in the air, he tugged it and gently guided it towards the ground.

Soon after, Momonosuke became further alarmed when Kaidou revealed that Luffy had passed away and that he could no longer sense Luffy. Momonosuke and Yamato were debating whether to continue fighting or give up when Yamato leapt onto his back. When Zunesha announced Joy Boy's reappearance, Momonosuke was prevented from going up against Kaidou with them. Momonosuke was shocked to learn this information, and he shocked Yamato by telling him what Zunesha had told him.

Yamato asked Momonosuke once more to make stronger Flame Clouds as the ones holding Onigashima kept getting weaker. As he strived to earn more, Momonosuke became aware that he was failing his mother as he recalled their last moments together.

Later, Luffy clenched his hand into a giant ball and yelled for Momonosuke to move the island out of the way of his punch. As Momonosuke pressed against the island, Luffy and Kaidou exchanged attacks in the air. Momonosuke eventually created a Flame Cloud potent enough to replace Kaidou's when his Flame Clouds totally vanished. After that, Momonosuke led the island safely to a landing area close to the Flower Capital.

After quickly recovering, he informed Zunesha that he would postpone opening Wano's Borders and proceeded to travel to the Flower Capital in dragon form while frightening the populace. As news of the Red Scabbards' return reached Wano, Momonosuke addressed the crowd, introducing himself as Kozuki Oden's son and informing them that Kaidou, Orochi, and the Beasts Pirates' tyranny had been broken. He then announced several changes, such as abolishing slavery and the weapon factories.

He continued by saying that while on his journey, he made a strong friend who eventually joined forces with him to destroy Kaidou and Orochi. Momonosuke seemed anxious about what else to say as the audience cheered the news and mumbled to Kin'emon. Then he forced himself through and declared his name, pleading with Wano's people for assistance in jointly reconstructing Wano and assured himself that he would honour his commitment to his parents.

After Kaidou's defeat, Admiral Ryokugyu arrived in Wano to take Luffy's head. Momonosuke joined the fight against Admiral Ryokugyu, along with the Red Scabbards and Yamato, claiming that he swore a promise to the people of Wano to defend them from all harm, including a Marine Admiral, at all costs. Soon after, Shanks drove Ryokugyu away, leaving Momonosuke crying after the battle.

He and Hiyori visited their grandfather Kozuki Sukiyaki after the Fire Festival. He apologised to them but was warmly welcomed as a relative by them both, and Momonosuke said that after losing their parents, they were relieved to have at least one more blood relative.

A few days later, Momonosuke intended to ask Zoro to teach him sword skills while he was performing his Shogun duties at the Flower Capital. When he asked Hiyori why he couldn't find the Straw Hats, she responded that they had departed early in the morning and was surprised they hadn't said goodbye. He then led Kin'emon and Yamato to the harbour, where the Straw Hats were preparing to leave Wano.

Angered, Momonosuke and Kin'emon decided to make Luffy pay for his seeming rudeness and lack of camaraderie. All feelings of resentment, however, were banished when Momonosuke arrived in Tokage Port and, in human form, pushed Luffy to the ground while pleading with him not to leave Wano out of fear for what the future might hold for him without Luffy's assistance.

To his surprise, Luffy threw a flag with the Straw Hats logo at him, claiming that he had purposefully waited for him to do so, designating Wano and its residents under his protection as an Emperor of the Sea. When Momonosuke questioned whether he was now a crew member, Luffy addressed him, Kin'emon, and Yamato, promising to come to get them when they were ready to become pirates. Momonosuke addressed Kin'emon after the Straw Hats left, promising that one day he would exceed his father. Momonosuke was unsure of where to place the flag when the group eventually made it back to the Flower Capital.

Momonosuke’s Personality

Momonosuke has a prideful and stubborn nature due to his samurai upbringing. Ironically, this mindset kept him from being harmed by the poison, NHC10. Despite his young age, he is very committed to the Bushido samurai code's virtues of kindness, bravery, righteousness, and honour. Momonosuke has a great deal of compassion, and he loves the people of Wano, his retainers, and other strangers. He had the strange habit of changing into his dragon form whenever he felt terrified after receiving his Devil Fruit powers.

Momonosuke boasts he will take over as Shogun of Wano Country and is proud of his family. In addition, he asserts that he has no fears. Momonosuke developed acrophobia due to being traumatised by Kaidou, who took him by the throat and threatened to toss him from the top of Kuri Castle, killing him. Before it, he had even travelled to and descended from Skypiea, so he was entirely comfortable with heights. He bit Kaidou, the root of his dread, and overcame his acrophobia.

Momonosuke is bitterly angry and hates Kaidou for killing his parents despite how much he loves them. In addition, Momonosuke was immensely irritated by his lack of ability to protect his retainers or exact revenge on his parents. Momonosuke struggled to take leadership due to his immaturity and emotional outbursts, but with Luffy's encouragement, he started learning how to be the Kozuki Family's leader. Momonosuke is also extremely intelligent for his age because, although wanting to find his sister, he recognises the risk of Orochi finding out where she is and, as a result, chooses to look for Hiyori after Orochi is defeated.

Momonosuke has a proud side, but he also has a modest and humble side, since he freely admitted that he lacked the power and skills to avenge his parents. As a result, Momonosuke committed himself to training nonstop to become strong and get above his weaknesses. He urged Hitetsu to keep the family legacy Ame no Habakiri since he had long since realised how weak and inferior he was to his father Oden and that he still wasn't strong enough to inherit it.

Despite his age, he appears highly attracted to older women like Robin and Nami. He has used flattery and a façade of innocence to have them treat him as their mother, enabling him to get away with actions that grown men consider obscene.

The look he gives Kin'emon, Brook, and Sanji makes it plain that he knows what he is doing, even though it initially seems like he is only naive and demonstrates his extreme perversion. He got his father's warped nature from him, who had impacted him as a young child.

Momonosuke’s Appearance

Shinobu observed that Momonosuke resembles his father, Oden, with a similar facial structure and a mane of long, unruly black hair that covered his head until he was eight. He doesn't have any facial hair at the moment, and unlike Oden, his hair is messy everywhere and not styled on top of his head.

Kozuki Momonosuke in One Piece.

Shinobu and his sister Hiyori, who are 180 and 170 cm tall, respectively, can reach his chest level due to their height. He is dressed in a dark cloak lined with crescent moon patterns, a Kozuki insignia, and a light-coloured kimono that bears the crest of the Kozuki Family.

Momonosuke had previously dressed as an 8-year-old and had the typical features of a samurai from feudal Japan, including a topknot and a shaved head. His hair, while not shaved, was black like his father's, but when shaved, it was turquoise like his mother's and sister's.

Kozuki Momonosuke in One Piece.

Momonosuke was relatively short because he was still a child. In keeping with his name ("momo" means "peach" in Japanese), he typically wore a pink kimono with peach patterns and a pair of geta. Momonosuke sported a purple obi and a crimson scarf during the Punk Hazard arc.

Momonosuke’s Abilities

As the lineal successor, Momonosuke controls the Kozuki Family's retainers, the Nine Red Scabbards. As a result, he is one of the key figures behind the formation of the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance, which would not have happened without his approaching Luffy and Law for help on an equal basis.

Momonosuke also has control over the Mink Tribe, a race of formidable warriors that are fiercely devoted to his clan to the point that they would die for any member or retainer since two of his retainers are the Mink Kings Inuarashi and Nekomamushi.

Momonosuke officially has control over the Wano recruits of the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance as their leader. Additionally, it was largely because of his presence that most of the Wano recruits from Udon joined the alliance. Being young, he hardly uses this power and gives the most of it to his devoted retainer Kin'emon.

Momonosuke is the current shogun and is in total command of Wano Country. By destroying all the hazardous factories, the water wells, and the slave trade, he brought Wano Country back to its former splendour.

Devil Fruit

Momonosuke consumed Vegapunk's artificial version of the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, which was created from Kaidou's Lineage Factor and modified by the original Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit but was declared unsuccessful by Vegapunk due to Momonosuke's Dragon form's improper colouring. It changed Momonosuke into a serpentine dragon, allowing him to appear to fly by creating Flame Clouds that he could hold onto and ascend.

He only recently consumed this fruit. Therefore he does not appear to have much control over it yet. In fact, not long after eating the fruit, he unintentionally transitioned into his complete animal form. He informed Luffy he was stuck in the rubbish dump when they first met. Thus he was unaware of his ability to create and ascend Flame Clouds.

This changed, though, when he was transformed by Shinobu into an adult dragon and saw Yamato during the Raid on Onigashima, as he would explain the entire potential of his Devil Fruit to him. As a result, Momonosuke used the Fruit's abilities to produce and control the clouds, similar to how Kaidou used his capacity to grip and tug the clouds. He would later perfect the skill, as he was seen stopping Onigashima from reaching the Flower Capital by gripping the clouds swallowing the island.

He accidentally used his cloud power to flee with Luffy clinging to him when he was startled by a hunger-induced delusion. Until Luffy told him, he was similarly unaware of his ability to change forms. However, it's also plausible that he is manufactured and hence lacks conscious control of his powers. When he got together with Kin'emon, he demonstrated the capacity to change back into his human form.

Momonosuke is occasionally seen changing his shape, though. Unlike other Zoan users who physically morph into their bestial forms, Momonosuke transforms in a poof of yellow smoke or clouds, and the shift is almost quick.

Momonosuke's dragon metamorphosis was almost identical to Kaidou's appearance, except for Kaidou's stature, horns, and skin tone. He has significantly improved his strength and toughness, allowing him to effortlessly shatter through walls by smashing into them and biting Kaidou while he is in his dragon form.

He improved his ability to create Flame Clouds, which allowed him to use them to fly quickly. He still needs to close his eyes to prevent his acrophobia from making it impossible for him to fly correctly because it still impacts him. He can fly around without much issue when confronting Kaidou and getting beyond his weakness to seize control of Kaidou's Flame Clouds and drag Onigashima away from the Flower Capital. Momonosuke used Kaidou's Bolo Breath during the Aramaki battle to weaken the Admiral's wooden form.

Physical Abilities

Momonosuke did manage to survive suffering a hard pounding from Kanjuro; this astonished the samurai, who attributed it to Momonosuke possessing Oden's blood. However, he has shown none of the superhuman strength his father possessed as a child. After Momonosuke was transformed into an adult, this was demonstrated when he appeared to have inherited his father's tenacity and felt no pain despite being struck by Hiyori and Nami.

Voice of all things

Momonosuke, like his father before him, can hear the Voice of All Things. He could talk with the enormous elephant Zunesha, see through its eyes, and give it commands—the only way it could do anything other than walk. Momonosuke controls a potent weapon capable of destroying whole fleets in a single strike should he decide to order it to attack.

Additionally, he shares some telepathic connection with Luffy, as the pirate informed Momonosuke that he would return and overthrow the emperor no matter what when he drowns in the sea after being defeated by Kaidou.

Swordsmanship

At a very young age, Momonosuke learned the fundamentals of swordsmanship from his father. Despite having swords, Momonosuke has never been seen using them in a real battle. His proficiency with them is therefore unknown.

He is repeatedly seen honing his swordsmanship once they arrive back in Wano, but he did not believe he was good enough to use Ame no Habakiri. Later, during the three days leading up to the raid on Onigashima, Momonosuke is seen practising and getting guidance from Zoro.

Momonosuke managed to use a knife he discovered on the ground to cut himself free from his cords while being bound by Kanjuro. During their altercation, Momonosuke managed to cut Kanjuro's palm with the knife, despite being quickly defeated by the samurai.

Haki and Weapons

Momonosuke is capable of using Kenbunshoku Haki. He, in particular, has been acknowledged to be quite developed, as evidenced by the Raid on Onigashima, where he could tell how Luffy was doing against Kaidou and Big Mom and surprised Shinobu and Yamato with the level of detail involved.

  • Unnamed Wakizashi: It is unknown how proficient he is with his short sword, however, he was spotted wearing it when he was in his human form before devouring his Devil Fruit.

  • Ame no Habakiri: One of the 21 Great Grade Meito is Ame no Habakiri. It was one of the two swords that Emperor Kaidou was scared of, and it was forged by his grandpa Kozuki Sukiyaki and passed down through his father, Kozuki Oden. He felt he wasn't worthy enough to use it, so he chose to use his Wakizashi to prepare for the approaching Onigashima Raid. Shinobu decided to accept Ame no Habakiri once Momonosuke had aged, and he had assumed the post of Shogun.

Momonosuke’s Relationships

Family and Retainers

Parents

Momonosuke adores his parents and found it difficult to talk about how they were killed by Kaidou and the Shogun of Wano Country. He has the utmost regard for his father, both as a samurai and the generous daimyo of Kuri, to the extent that he intervened in Nekomamushi and Inuarashi's battle for the sake of his name.

When Oden passed away, he left Momonosuke one of his favourite swords, the Ame no Habakiri, as a testament to his affection for him. Oden also encouraged Momonosuke to travel to study more about the world as he had done. Momonosuke joined forces with the Heart and Straw Hat Pirates to exact revenge after they were killed.

When Kaidou threatened to kill him, Momonosuke refused to deny his ancestry and avowed that he would take his father's place as the Shogun of Wano in the future. He sobbed, partially happy that he would be reunited with his parents in the afterlife, as he was ready to pass away at Kaidou's hands.

Hiyori

Momonosuke loves his younger sister dearly. Even though Momonosuke believes his sister is still alive, he indicated he cannot meet her until Orochi is removed from power because otherwise Hiyori may become a target. When Zoro and Kawamatsu informed him that his sister was still alive, he felt great relief.

Kin'emon

To ensure Momonosuke's safety, Kin'emon, one of the Kozuki Family's retainers, pledged to defend the boy with his life and pretended to be his father throughout the journey. Despite the father-son facade, the two have a strong sense of trust and care for one another, almost like family. The Straw Hats saw that although the two weren't related, they had similar looks and twisted characteristics.

Raizo

Raizo vowed to defend Momonosuke with his life while serving as one of the Kozuki Family's retainers. Momonosuke insisted on seeing Raizo despite having to climb the challenging Whale Tree.

Inuarashi and Nekomamushi

They made a life-or-death oath to guard Momonosuke as retainers of the Kozuki Family. Despite their mutual hostility, they quickly stopped fighting when Momonosuke begged them to cease and resumed their friendship, working together and reminiscing about the past.

Ashura Doji

Due to his deep admiration for Oden, Momonosuke's father, Ashura Doji, followed him. Initially, Ashura was devoted to the entire Kozuki Family. However, after ten years of waiting for Momonosuke to return, many of Ashura's allies lost patience and launched an attack on Kaidou, which resulted in their deaths. Ashura appeared and rejoined the Nine Red Scabbards after Yasuie's passing, helping Momonosuke.

Friends

Ginko

Ginko was a fellow prisoner on Punk Hazard and one of the kids Caesar Clown experimented on. She attempted to get Momonosuke to eat anything when she spoke to him for the first time after he had been seized by Caesar Clown's men. After seeing him consume Vegapunk's Artificial Devil Fruit and change into a dragon, she expressed concern for him.

Straw Hat Pirates

Similar to Nefertari Vivi before him, Momonosuke has become relatively close to the Straw Hat crew on his voyage with them. By the end of Raid on Onigashima, he regards the pirate crew as his closest friends and enormously appreciates their assistance in saving his country. To let people know that Wano was aligned with and protected by the Straw Hats, they gave a duplicate of their Jolly Roger before they left and instructed Momonosuke to point to it when necessary.

Yamato

When Momonosuke first encountered Yamato, it was during the Raid on Onigashima. Yamato presented himself to Momonosuke as Kozuki Oden, which made Momonosuke fear him and not take his efforts seriously. He informed Momonosuke that he must not perish in this war because he will be Shogun of Wano, and it would be his duty to protect him under whatever circumstances because he is impersonating Oden. Yamato protected Momonosuke throughout the Raid in Onigashima wherever it was needed. He also helped Momonosuke by guiding the latter about his Devil Fruit abilities.

Enemies

Caesar Clown

Momonosuke could escape the security on Punk Hazard and enter a hidden area where he learned of Caesar's plans for the kidnapped children.

Donquixote Doflamingo

Momonosuke once witnessed Doflamingo's cruelty, and the experience left him traumatized. He was as unafraid to express his apprehension of the pirate. When Doflamingo almost killed Sanji before Law intervened, he was likewise concerned.

Giolla

Donquixote Pirates officer Giolla assaulted the Thousand Sunny and attempted to kidnap Momonosuke. Momonosuke was released from Giolla's grip with the help of Nami, Chopper, and Brook.

Kaidou

Momonosuke promised to wreak revenge on Kaidou with the aid of Luffy for his part in the execution of his father. While Momonosuke was weak compared to Oden, Kaidou had threatened to murder him personally but decided to leave Momonosuke to perish in the burning Kuri Castle.

Kurozumi Orochi

Momonosuke was enraged and hated Kurozumi Orochi for his partnership with Kaidou and involvement in his father's killing. Momonosuke was unhappy that Kaidou had killed Orochi, thus he never had the chance.

Jack

Zunesha requested permission to strike Jack's fleet during the second of his attacks on Zou. Jack had to be pushed back at the command of Momonosuke, the only person who could speak to the elephant.

Kurozumi Kanjuro

To destroy the Kozuki lineage and give the Kurozumi a chance to gain control, Kurozumi Kanjuro joined the Kozuki Family on Orochi's orders to collect information about them. Kanjuro becomes cruel towards the youngster after revealing his true self, even beating him until he is unconscious for trying to flee.

Others

Zunesha

Momonosuke could hear Zunesha's cries for aid during Jack's attack since he had the power to hear the voice of all things. Momonosuke and Zunesha have a unique bond that enables Momonosuke to see and hear as the elephant and to share Zunesha's sight. On Momonosuke's command, Zunesha swiftly dispatched Jack and his fleet.
