Hogback made Kumashi and modelled him after Perona's teddy bear at Perona's request sometime after Hogback met Perona 10 years before the Straw Hat Pirates arrived on Thriller Bark. Five years before the Straw Hats showed up, Brook started purifying zombies, and Kumashi tried to tell Perona what was going on, only to get shouted at for waking her awake.
Kumashi welcomed Perona back as she began to restore her spirit to her body in the form of the Negative Hollows that had been watching Thriller Bark. Perona reprimanded Kumashi for speaking due to his deep voice before announcing that they were leaving. Perona informed Kumashi that the Risky Brothers were transporting the vanquished Straw Hats in coffins after Ryuma rendered Nami, Usopp, and Tony Tony Chopper unconscious.
She then gave Kumashi instructions to bring the coffins to the dance hall. Kumashi waved at Perona before wishing her a happy new year after she chastised him for speaking his confirmation and informed him that she would be in charge of the treasure recovery team at the Thousand Sunny.
However, after fleeing the Wild Zombies, Nami, Usopp, and Chopper discovered Kumashi, and they hid inside him using the zipper on his back which he couldn't reach by utilizing the zipper. Kumashi attempted to explain to Absalom that the Straw Hats were hiding inside of him when he approached him while looking for them, but Absalom cut him off and asked if he had seen them.
When Perona came back, Kumashi greeted her and attempted to notify her as well, but Perona rebuked him violently for talking again, keeping the pirates' presence a secret. After Monkey D. Luffy was apprehended, Kumashi went to a meeting with the other Mysterious Four members with Perona by his side.
There, he attempted to reveal that Nami, Usopp, and Chopper were hiding inside him, but Perona once more ordered him not to speak, and the group then watched as Gecko Moria severed Luffy's shadow. Perona thought Kumashi was talking again as Nami, Usopp, and Chopper responded to what had just transpired. He then reprimanded him. Soon after, Kumashi went to the freezer where Oars' body was kept with Perona and the other Mysterious Four.
Kumashi observed as Moria inserted Luffy's shadow into the dead body of Oars. Nami, Usopp, and Chopper fled from Kumashi in utter fright as Oars suddenly opened his eyes and shouted. Perona was shocked and demanded to know whether Kumashi had been concealing them all along. Perona demanded to know why Kumashi was hiding the Straw Hats while the Soldier Zombies brought tonnes of food for Oars to eat.
However, after berating him for talking, Kumashi was forced to stop. Kumashi accompanied Perona to her chamber after she said she would pacify the pirates with her Negative Hollows as the Straw Hats went on the rampage across the house, waking up those who had their shadows snatched. Kumashi was present when Perona was accosted by Roronoa Zoro, Sanji, Usopp, and Franky shortly after, but he only stood by and observed while Usopp allowed the others to continue.
Perona apologized to Kumashi, who was astonished when her plan to attack Usopp with four Negative Hollows at once backfired. Soon after, Kumashi caught up with Usopp as he was running after Perona and yelled at him to stop touching Perona before swiping at him many times with his muscular arms.
Usopp was able to frighten Kumashi away with a fireball and stop him from chasing him any further with a wall of flames. Later, after Usopp had been brutally beaten by Perona's Mini Hollows, Kumashi came up with him and started pounding him into submission. Perona was shocked and furious when Sogeking suddenly took control and forced a salt ball into Kumashi's mouth, cleansing him.
Kumashi's body was left on Thriller Bark after Moria was defeated and it was abandoned; Perona discovered it when she got back.
Kumashi's body was brought back to Kuraigana Island by Perona. She took Kumashi with her when she made the decision to depart after reading about Moria in the papers.
Although he regularly forgot that Perona did not want him to talk, which caused her to severely scold him for doing so, Kumashi was fiercely devoted to her and would brutally beat anybody who attempted to harm her. He feared fire, like the majority of zombies.
Kumashi is a large wild zombie that resembles a patchworked teddy bear. Bandages cover his lower body, legs, and arms, which are covered in white, light blue, and orange material. He has bloodshot eyes and a surgical mask covering his lips. He also has a large white and blue cap on his head, which suggests that he lacks eyelids.
Kumashi was the leader of the Wild Zombies and held leadership over Vice-Commander Gallant Hippo and other lower-ranking Wild Zombies. Perona was the sole higher-ranking Wild Zombie. Kumashi was a zombie, and he was painless.
With power well above that of a normal bear, he was able to smash opponents into the ground with a single attack that would crater it and rip up solid stone with his strikes. Usopp saw that he had good physical speed, and he was able to easily keep up with him while following him.
