History and Appearance of the Mochi Mochi no Mi

History

At some point in the past, the second son and third child of the Charlotte Family as well as one of the Sweet Commanders of the Big Mom Pirates, Charlotte Katakuri consumed the Mochi Mochi no Mi Devil Fruit.

Appearance

The Mochi Mochi no Mi is a round fruit with a creamy white color and has the typical swirl pattern of all Devil Fruits. The lowest section of the fruit is narrow before growing a rounded foot, giving the fruit the impression of being pinched off in the middle. A green stem grows from the top of the fruit.

Strengths, Awakening and Weaknesses of the Mochi Mochi no Mi

Strengths

The primary ability of this fruit is that it allows its user to create, manipulate and transform any part of their body into mochi — specifically, a thick, extremely viscous, white-coloured mochi paste that they can control in any way they choose, including its viscosity and stickiness. They can use this to form structures like walls and other large items, which are subsequently hardened.

Due to its sticky, stretchy nature, it can be used as an efficient blunt-force weapon when hardened by Busoshoku Haki and is capable of catching anyone, even exceptionally strong ones. The latter is so dense that high-caliber gunfire cannot pierce through it. Also, because of its malleability and compatibility with Haki, mochi can be shaped into various shapes, including fists, tendrils, and even spiked clubs.

The power of this fruit to transform the user into mochi is equivalent to the properties of a Logia-type, which makes it unique among the Paramecia-type. As a result, the user is intangible against attacks that are not imbued with Busoshoku Haki, and can freely transform their morphed body into shape.

Awakening

Like the rest of the Devil Fruit, the Mochi Mochi no Mi has the capacity to be “awakened”, which allows the user to transform inorganic Marisela surrounding them into mochi.

Weaknesses

If a significant amount of liquid to the mochi, it loses some of its stickiness which allows the trapped opponent to attempt to escape. Additionally, the mochi is edible, especially if the user is not actively controlling it, so someone with a great appetite can eat their way through it if they are buried in it. This can be avoided if the mochi is too hard to bite. Other than these, the user is vulnerable to the standard Devil Fruit flaws.

Usage and Techniques of the Mochi Mochi no Mi

Katakuri uses the fruit’s abilities in combat and is capable of managing massive amounts of mochi with great precision. He has been shown using mochi to lengthen his limbs for various purposes. He can extend his leg to become an extremely fast, massive, tendril-like blunt weapon, imbuing it with Haki to hurt and entrap his opponent. This limb extension is also useful in circumstances where Katakuri must rescue or safeguard others from danger.

Katakuri used his Devil Fruit to make mochi earplugs to protect himself from his mother’s destructive screams, and he gave them to his siblings as well. Cannons can also be plugged with mochi, causing them to explode when shot.

This Devil Fruit gives the user’s body the attributes of a “stretchy” substance, allowing them to lengthen and expand their limbs at will. The user can fully transform their body into their substance (mochi) and produce and manipulate it outside of their body.

This enables Katakuri to imitate his opponent’s attacks, and with his ability to manipulate mochi, allows him to add his own twists, such as extra mochi arms for Hawk Gatling. These duplicated tactics are highly effective due to Katakuri’s physical abilities.

Katakuri’s highly advanced Kenbunshoku Haki allows him to avoid assaults by changing the shape of his mochi body, forcing Haki-imbued blows to pass through air rather than impact him. He can transform into mochi to deflect bullets and reform after suffering fatal injuries such as bisection.

He must, however, remain cool in order to use his Kenbunshoku Haki precily to predict the opponent’s next attack and move his body accidentally, or else he will be vulnerable to Haki like any Devil Fruit user.

Katakuri, as an awakened Devil Fruit user, can transform surrounding inorganic items into mochi, spreading adhesive substance around to increase his range of attacks and capture his opponents.

Katakuri has demonstrated various techniques using the power of creating and manipulating the mochi. They are:

Cannon Techniques

Yanagi Mochi (Willow Mochi)

Katakuri raises his leg and sprouts several long tendrils of mochi from it, resembling a willow tree, with the ends of the tendrils bent to mimic his foot and use it to repeatedly stomp down on his opponent.

Mochi Tsuki (Mochi Thrust)

Katakuri strongly bends his left arm while holding his trident Mogura, then untwists it while thrusting the trident forward, creating an extremely powerful drilling attack. The attack is great enough to completely destroy a structure.

Kaku Mochi (Square Mochi)

Katakuri transforms his arms and hands into mochi and compresses them into a square shape. He then uses Busoshoku Haki to harden them before punching his opponent. The fists’ compact, tight square shape results in attacks that are far stronger than a typical Haki-enhanced punch.

Yaki Mochi (Grilled Mochi)

Katakuri inflates his mochi forearm until it explodes, hurling his Haki-embedded fist at a distance towards his target. The fist moves so quickly that it catches fire owing to friction.

Zan Giri Mochi (Sliced Mochi)

This is Katakuri’s strongest attack in which he transforms his entire body into mochi and spins in a donut-like shape towards his opponent. When he reaches his opponent, he returns to normal shape and slams his enormous mochi forearm, covered in spikes and hardened with Busoshoku Haki, into his opponent with incredible power.

Aside from the damage caused by the powerful impact, his opponent will be stuck to his forearm due to the stickiness of the mochi, which Katakuri will then use to spin his arm through the air several time before smashing it down into the ground from a great height, crushing his opponent under its weight with enough force to create a large crater.

Awakened Techniques

Nagare Mochi (Flowing Mochi)

Katakuri uses his awakened abilities to change the ground around him into mochi, which he uses to capture his opponent from a far-away distance.

Kagami Mochi (Concentrated Mochi)

Katakuri uses his awakened abilities to transform neighboring walls and ceilings into mochi, causing them to collapse on his opponent, burying them beneath a big quantity of mochi and strangling them.

Awadare Mochi (Raindrop Mochi)

Katakuri transforms nearby surfaces into many blunt-ended mochi tendrils using his awakened abilities. He then has them charge at his opponent, hoping to smash them.

Muso Donuts (Peerless Donuts)

Katakuri summons tendrils of mochi from the ground and coils them into the shape of donuts using his awakened abilities. His fondness of donuts inspired the name of this approach.

Chikara Mochi (Power Mochi)

Using his awakened abilities, Katakuri uses his Kaku Mochi technique to mold the donut-shaped mochi into huge Busoshoku Haki-enhanced arms. He then manipulates his arms to punch his opponent with enormous force while wearing a coating of mochi on his hands.

Mochi Ginchaku (Mochi Singing Result)

This technique is an even more powerful version of Chikara Mochi. Using his awakened abilities, Katakuri summons multiple mochi donuts around his opponent, molds them into Busoshoku Haki-enhanced limbs, and has them continuously smash him into the ground.

Non-Cannon Techniques

Tori Mochi (Bird Mochi)

Katakuri extends a mochi whip from his palm and entangles his opponent. He then swings the whip around to fling his enemy away.

Mochi Hadan (Mochi Blade Bullet)

Katakuri transforms his hands into mochi and creates a finger pistol. He then hardens the tip of his finger with Busoshoku Haki and launches it like a bullet at his opponent.

Muso Mochi Hadan (Peerless Mochi Blade Bullet)

It is an advanced version of Mochi Hadan. Katakuri transforms his entire forearm into mochi and molds it into a Busoshoku Haki-hardened Gatling-gun. He then unleashes a barrage of Busoshoku Haki-enhanced mochi bullets on his enemy.

Naguri Mochi (Fist Mochi)

Katakuri unleashes a barrage of attacks on his opponent after using the Kaku Mochi technique.

Kuzu Mochi (Handclap Mochi)

Katakuri uses his newly awakened skills to mold nine Muso Donuts into Busoshoku Haki-enhanced arms. He then directs them to repeatedly punch his opponent.

Kashiwa Mochi (Handclap Mochi)

Katakuri uses his newly awakened abilities to mold two Muso Donuts into two huge mochi arms. He then has the arms attack his opponent with a clap, pinning them between the two hands.

Muso Kashiwa Mochi (Peerless Handclap Mochi)

This is an empowered version of the Kashiwa Mochi and also an awakened ability. In this technique, the two mochi arms are covered with Busoshoku Haki and Katakuri has them clap onto the opponent repeatedly, smashing them between the two hands.

Kuri Mochi (Chestnut Mochi)

Katakuri uses his newly awakened abilities to create a massive Muso Donut wrapped in spikes and hardened with Busoshoku Haki. He then fires a continual volley of hardened mochi spikes from the donut towards his opponent.
