Sakazuki in One Piece

Sakazuki, formerly known by his admiral nickname Akainu, succeeded Sengoku as the current fleet admiral of the Marines. He was the last of the three admirals to debut during the first half of the series. One of Sakazuki's first actions as the fleet admiral was to move Marine Headquarters to the New World to prepare for the New Pirate Age.

Sakazuki is arguably the most devoted advocate of Absolute Justice, to the point that his zeal forced his fellow admiral Aokiji to reject his elevation to the rank of fleet admiral and leave the Marines once it was unsuccessful.

Sakazuki’s Personality

Sakazuki is a powerful and effective leader who has done well to bolster the Marines' authority and reputation. Still, it is preferable to characterize him as an extremist and relatively rigid. His derived motto is "Thorough Justice" because he is firmly convinced of Absolute Justice and is brutal in upholding it.

He is severe, expressionless, deadly serious, and the most brutal of the three admirals before the time skip. This has earned him a reputation as a highly formidable opponent. However, his dogmatism raises more questions because it could turn the Marines into an army worse than the enemies they seek to defeat. Despite this personality, Sakazuki occasionally displays self-control.

He has borderline, if not outright fanatic, behaviour due to his radicalism. He is mercilessly eager to do whatever it takes to further his ambitions, regardless of the cost. He is highly inflexible and uncompromising in his ideas, displaying little compassion for anybody or anything. When Fujitora correctly noted that Sakazuki's concept of Justice had no credibility or honour if it was that weak, Sakazuki became even more furious since he perceived it as a personal attack.

He primarily views the Marines as an outgrowth of himself and his own ideologies, is willing to kill those who do not share his views, and has little to no regard for those under his command. Although this has made him very strong and feared among pirates, his own troops are unhappy and loathe him because of this fear.

He also does not tolerate Marines who run away from their posts; the one comfort he offers is that they should not disgrace their family. Sakazuki would like his concepts of mass murder weapons and cruel experiments on inmates, according to Caesar Clown. Any Marine who is not prepared to stand up for Justice, in Akainu's opinion, is not deserving of the Marine title.

Sakazuki is incredibly proud of the Marines' reputation. His pride is so strong that he would rather lie about the incident to maintain the Marines' commitment to his concept of Absolute Justice. He is aware of the need to keep the public's trust. Still, he is more concerned with the humiliation that losing it would cause the Marines than with the morale and reputation of his soldiers. Despite serving as an admiral before promotion, Akainu is prepared to tell lies and manipulate others to achieve Justice.

People who try to obstruct him are annoying hurdles in his eyes. While other Marines, such as Sengoku and Garp, have some respect for their skilled enemies, Akainu lacks this sentiment and instead mocks them whenever he has the chance.

Akainu was one of the few people who knew that Luffy was Dragon's son before Sengoku made it public. Because Luffy is Dragon's kid, Akainu believes that his very existence constitutes a threat to the world and that he must be killed. In fact, Akainu has such strong feelings about the heritage that he declares he would make sure that Ace or Luffy were not allowed to escape the battle due to their ancestry, even if every other pirate did.

According to Sakazuki, it is not the World Nobles' place to obstruct the activities of the Marines, and vice versa. This was seen when he confronted the Five Elders, criticising them for allowing the Celestial Dragons' CP0 to forge Donquixote Doflamingo's retirement from the Warlords of the Sea and even raising the possibility that they were Celestial Dragons puppets.

Sometimes, Sakazuki can show restraint while dealing with pirates or upset international relations. He exhibited this when, upon arriving at Marineford to save Koby, he made no move to attack Shanks. Also, when he has to wait for the outcome of a fight, he finds being Fleet Admiral frustrating.

Sakazuki’s Appearance

Sakazuki is the most muscular of the past admirals and is comparable to Sengoku and Garp's physiques. He is also an extraordinarily tall, light-skinned man. He has a square-shaped face, very noticeable facial features, short black hair, and is roughly the same height as his other admirals. He is taller than other significant characters like Jinbe, who is 301 cm, at 306 cm (10').

He typically wears a traditional Marine cap and a red, double-breasted suit with what looks to be a pink rose on the left buttonhole. He lacks a tie, unlike many high-ranking Marines. Instead, he wears an unbuttoned shirt with a light red floral pattern, exposing his toned neck and a portion of his tattoo. He's got black shoes and gloves on.

On the left side of his chest, he has a black (light blue in the anime) tattoo incorporating several floral images. The admiral has a tattoo on his left shoulder that covers part of his back and ribs and has flame-shaped edges. On his right deltoids and a little portion of the bicep, he has a second, smaller tattoo in the form of a black sword. His eyes appear brown in the anime, and Eiichiro Oda also depicted this in a coloured design.

The right side of Sakazuki's neck and face is scarred, and a portion of his right ear is missing due to the fierce combat he had with Kuzan at Punk Hazard after the time skip. In addition to his wounds, he also developed a beard and moustache. Sakazuki has also swapped off his typical red suit for a white one, similar to what Sengoku wore as Fleet Admiral.

He still wears the same floral-patterned shirt underneath, though he is not sporting his famous black gloves. His customary Marine cap is still on his head, but unlike his predecessor's, it does not have the life-size seagull perched atop it. He also commonly has a cigar in his mouth.

He looks to be wearing a darker outfit once more later in the Wano Country arc, probably a crimson one similar to his pre-time skip clothing. Sakazuki wore an open red shirt, khaki trousers, a loosely tied yellow-orange ribbed belt with a silver bullseye-shaped buckle and red trainers when he was younger. He wore a katana on his back as well.

He wore a plain white Marine cap under a dark grey hood at the Ohara Incident, which appeared to be part of a cloak underneath his suit or Marine coat. His face was always disguised by the cap bill until he got out of his chair during the Summit War of Marineford to smash an approaching iceberg.

Sakazuki maintained the same cynical outlook on life as a child. He had a dagger in his hand and was dressed in torn clothing. The headgear he wore was identical to the Marines' one he would wear later. It was inscribed with the characters for "justice".

Sakazuki’s Abilities

With only the Commander-in-Chief and the Five Elders of the World Government as his six direct superiors, Sakazuki, as fleet admiral, has operational absolute command of the Marines. Sakazuki can now fully define the organization's strategy, choose tactics, set policy, and freely assign and reassign forces to deploy globally in missions (including the admirals).

This is in addition to any previously held authority as an admiral (e.g., issuing special orders like the enactment of a Buster Call on any island he deems a threat at any time and granting others such privilege).

He can promote or demote lower ranks and assign such powers to others as he sees fit. During the two-year time skip, he used this power to order the Marine Headquarters to be moved to the New World and to execute a universal-scale draft. As the current fleet admiral, Sakazuki is one of the world's most tough figures in warfare, having served with his other admirals as the World Government's "Greatest Military Force" (i.e., the most potent individual combatants it can provide, feared by criminals everywhere).

Sakazuki's background gives him a particularly dreadful reputation even by admiral standards, as most prominently demonstrated after the Summit War when Blackbeard, upon learning of Sakazuki's presence aboard a Marine ship intended for negotiations. He immediately fled off the island he lived on with his crew, observing their lack of readiness to face the admiral despite Blackbeard, at that point, having developed two of the strongest Devil Fruit powers.

Sakazuki's fighting skills were well-proven during the Summit War against Whitebeard, an Emperor and the strongest man in the world, who the admiral could match in a duel. In their second encounter, Whitebeard prevailed over Sakazuki and struck him hard; the admiral responded by doing the same and melting off half of Whitebeard's face. Sakazuki quickly recovered and rejoined the fight after being abandoned to fall into a depth.

Physical Strength

Sakazuki has incredible physical strength, as do all admirals. Whitebeard, the "Strongest Man in the World," who, even in his advanced age could easily overcome a giant's might, was a match for his raw physical strength. He was able to fight and clash evenly with him in close quarters.

Sakazuki vs. Whitebeard.

However, Sakazuki's enormous durability and endurance are what truly stand out. This is best demonstrated by the fact that not even two consecutive, point-blank quake punches from Whitebeard could knock him out; as a bonus, the second punch was powerful enough to break the island of Marineford in half.

Sakazuki continued to be aware after that and still had the energy to fight, only showing minimal facial bleeding and never showing signs of fatigue or injury-related limitations. Sakazuki's duel with Kuzan, in which they fought for ten days, during which both men sustained severe injuries, is another example of his determination, endurance, and willpower. Despite the time it took to settle, Sakazuki was ultimately victorious over Kuzan.

Kuzan vs Sakazuki.

Sakazuki has proven to be relatively quick, using his abilities to go forward at high rates of speed. He can easily catch up to people moving away from him quickly. The admiral has also shown keen hearing, able to detect underwater movements at a distance.

Intelligence and Leadership skills

Sakazuki had numerous government dignitaries firmly urge him to succeed Sengoku as fleet admiral over the latter's personal selection of Kuzan, vowing to his considered leadership abilities and military competence. Despite being infamous, feared, and despised by some for his extreme leadership style, Sakazuki's leadership abilities are apparent.

In addition to fighting, Sakazuki is a cunning manipulator who tries to persuade opponents using his information about them.

Devil Fruit

Sakazuki consumed the Magu Magu no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to control, create, and change his body into magma. He can burn, melt, and destroy anything in his way thanks to his magma's intense heat and explosive force; in fact, Sakazuki's Devil Fruit is thought to have the highest attack power.

His primary method of attack is turning his arms into magma and launching burning punches (or clawed thrusts) that can easily pierce human bodies, greatly enlarging his arms to throw giant magma fists forward to reach enemies farther away or even launching multiple magma fists as a barrage of meteor-like projectiles tows the battlefield. As a homage to his animal motif, he has also been spotted moulding his magma fist into the shape of a fanged dog head.

Sakazuki's Devil Fruit powers.

Along with being immune to all attacks except those from Haki, Sakazuki's magma body is extremely hot, discouraging enemies from attacking him physically for fear of being burned.

He also has tremendous mobility thanks to his powers; he can excavate through the earth and melt everything in his way. He can also short-fly via propulsion with magma jets.

Even for a Logia, this ability has great potential and power; when used excessively by Sakazuki for ten days, it warped the climate of half an island, permanently rendering it a blazing hell that embroils even the surrounding sea.

Haki & Weapons

Sakazuki possesses the ability to use Busoshuko Haki and Kenbunshoku Haki.

As a child, Sakazuki was seen brandishing a knife and as a young Marine brandishing a red-hilted katana.

Sakazuki’s Relationships

Marines

Three admirals before time-skip. (Sakazuki in the middle)

Sakazuki is in charge of the entire organisation as the Marine fleet admiral. But his brutal dedication to "Absolute Justice" has turned his coworkers against him. Even though he is merciless, Sakazuki is prepared to keep the Marines' numbers for himself when the military might of the Marines is insufficient to compete with formidable opponents.

Kizaru

When Sakazuki became the fleet admiral, Kizaru became a confidant to share his views, frequently providing beneficial guidance and serving as a conduit to express his frustrations regarding the mounting menace of piracy, particularly the Straw Hats. The Marine who comes closest to becoming a friend to Sakazuki is Kizaru.

Aokiji

It is unknown how they got along before, but since Akainu committed the horrendous crime during the Ohara Incident, Aokiji has only had hatred towards him. Aokiji fiercely disagreed when it was revealed that Akainu would succeed Sengoku as fleet admiral, and they engaged in combat.

After ten days of intense battle, Sakazuki emerged victorious. Kuzan decided to leave the Marines and resign from his position as admiral because he refused to work under his old colleague.

Monkey D. Garp

Monkey D. Garp was treated disrespectfully by Akainu as well, despite being a "hero" who qualified for the rank of admiral because he belonged to the previous generation and shared ancestry with criminals like Dragon and Luffy.

Sengoku had to hold Garp when he attempted to kill Akainu for killing Ace. It is unknown if this has led to a further ridge between the two men or caused any issues among Marines who favour Garp's or Akainu's interpretation of Justice.

Sengoku

Before the time skip, Akainu did not appear to have any issues with Sengoku as his subordinate. This was demonstrated when he reluctantly cooperated with Sengoku's request to stop the Marineford War's hostilities and let the Whitebeard Pirates leave. He still has neutral terms with Sengoku after the time skip.

Fujitora

The bond between Sakazuki and Admiral Fujitora is likewise frayed. Although they appeared to be getting along since Issho could call Sakazuki by the nickname Saka-san without upsetting him, Sakazuki had first placed great trust in him.

This good relationship altered when Issho intervened during the Dressrosa events, trusting pirates to beat Doflamingo and apologising to King Riku for the World Government allowing Doflamingo to torment their kingdom for such a long time.

Ryokugyu

Sakazuki is highly regarded by Aramaki. Aramaki is likewise adamantly favouring a stricter, more dictatorial, and fundamentalist version of Absolute Justice, where "hierarchy breeds stability." At the same time, Sakazuki has enough faith in Aramaki to promote him to admiral during the World Military Draught.

World Government

Sakazuki meeting with Five Elders after Dressrosa events.

Sakazuki is revealed to be a passionate supporter of the World Government's philosophy of Absolute Justice and to have the utmost loyalty to it. Many in the upper echelons nominated him to succeed Sengoku when the Fleet Admiral retired.

World Nobles: Sakazuki, despite his allegiance to the World Government, believes that World Nobles are not to meddle in the affairs of the Marines and vice versa.

Five Elders: Sakazuki is devoted to his duties and to the World Government; however, he doesn't get along well with the Five Elders. Sakazuki even went so far as to oppress, mock, and humiliate them by saying that they had been "walked over by the Celestial Dragons' puppets, " proving that he does not always agree with the Five Elders.

CP0: Sakazuki dislikes CP0 and even refers to them as the "Celestial Dragons' puppets" when arguing with the Five Elders.

Enemies

Monkey D. Luffy: Luffy is always referred to as the "Dragon's son" by Akainu, who sees him as a threat on a grand scale based only on his ancestry and demands that Luffy be eliminated at any cost. As a result of Fleet Admiral Sakazuki killing his brother Ace and leaving a significant scar on his chest, Luffy has shown his greatest hatred for him, making him one of the future Emperor's archenemies (along with Blackbeard).

Edward Newgate: Akainu attacked Whitebeard in battle at the square to stop him from further harming Marineford. Whitebeard savagely hurt Akainu after he provoked and killed the second division's leader Ace.

Whitebeard Pirates: Akainu sees all pirates as outlaws who should not be allowed to exist, and the Whitebeard Pirates are no different. After severely hurting Whitebeard and killing Ace, the other Whitebeard Pirates turned on him, and the remaining commanders tried to fight him even though they might have been killed.

Seven Warlords of the Sea: Sakazuki perceived the Warlords of the Sea as little more than pirates and thought they could not be trusted, even though they were on the side of the World Government. Despite this, Sakazuki considered them a necessary evil and lamented the end of the Warlord system.

Jinbe: Jinbe's departure from the Warlords of the Sea and his cooperation with Luffy are why Akainu views Jinbe as a traitor. Jinbe immediately warned the Straw Hats about how brutal the Marines have become under Akainu's command because he knows how dangerous he is.

Crocodile: The former Warlord of the Sea Crocodile and Akainu clashed during the battle at Marineford. Crocodile stopped Akainu when he tried to kill both Luffy and Jinbe.

Shanks: While Sakazuki was horrified to see Shanks at Marineford, he prevented him from killing Koby. Even though Sakazuki was aware of Shanks' threat and refrained from attacking him, the latter's presence prompted Akainu's wrath, allowing Luffy to escape from Sakazuki's hands.

Marshall D. Teach: Akainu heard Blackbeard speak two years ago when he came to Marineford and stole Whitebeard's Devil Fruit power. However, he ignored him in favour of pursuing and attempting to murder Luffy, which failed. After the battle at Marineford, Akainu was ordered to deal with Blackbeard, but because they were aware of his threat, Blackbeard and his men escaped.
