History of Sandora Desert

Arabasta Arc/Saga

The Straw Hat Pirates had to travel over the Desert’s dunes multiple times during the Arabasta Arc in order to reach different towns. They had to brave the Sandora Desert’s many dangers, like the burning sun, supplies being taken by thieving birds, hallucinogenic plants, and sandstorms, among others, as they traveled from Erumula to Yuba.

The Straw Hats briefly considered going back the way they had come after learning from Toto that the rebels had relocated to Katorea, but Luffy rejected the notion and questioned Vivi about it. In the end, Luffy was able to persuade Vivi to let him and his team battle Crocodile at Rainbase, traveling through another section of desert en route.

The Straw Hats had to travel across the desert once more to reach Alubarna and put an end to the Warlord’s planned conflict after escaping Crocodile’s trap at Rainbase. With the aid of Alubarna on Hasami, the Kung-Fu Dugongs from Erumalu, and the Super Spot-Billed Duck Troops, the Straw Hats were able to go to the capital quickly and safely while Luffy stayed behind to face Crocodile on Rainbase’s outskirts.

Geography of Sandora Desert

Sand dunes on the Sandora Desert, which can rise up to 300 meters, are very ancient. The landscape is usually barren, however there are a few crags that can offer relief from the scorching sun.

The Sandora Desert has extremely harsh weather, with scorching days and chilly nights. The rocks in the desert can get hot enough to serve as a temporary griddle for cooking because of the intense heat. This area is known for growing the mescal cactus, which can give you hallucinations if you eat it.

Sandstorms are common and occasionally hit towns. It was formerly revealed that Crocodile was to blame for some of the more intense sandstorms in the area, especially those that affected the town of Yuba.

The desert is divided by the Sandora River. The capital Alubarna, Nanohana, Katorea, and Tamarisk are to the west of the river, while the towns of Rainbase, Yuba, and the ruins of Erumalu are to the east. On foot, the distance between Yuba and Rainbase is about one day (roughly half of that regarding Erumalu to Yuba). Despite being largely dry, there are a few oases dispersed throughout the desert that allow settlements to exist.

Inhabitants of Sandora Desert

There aren’t many people living in towns and cities in the Sandora Desert.

However, the indigenous wildlife that lives in the exposed sands is quite deadly. Warusagi Birds have a reputation for robbing unsuspecting visitors while acting dead.

Sandora Lizards

Sandora lizards grow to enormous size and can prey on passing humans. Apart from this, the region is also home to docile creatures like Hasami, a huge Moving Crab, and Matsuge, a Yasa Camel.

Sandora Bandits

Exclusive in anime, the Sandora Bandits are a band of robbers who reside there. They attempted to attack the Barbar Pirates, who are their sworn enemies, but were repulsed when their captain was run over by the dung ball of a Giant Dung Beetle.
