Smoker in One Piece

Smoker
Smoker

Smoker the White Hunter is a Marine officer and the commander of the G-5 Marine Base. He was promoted to vice admiral at some point during the time-skip. He has been Tashigi's superior and mentor since their initial introduction in the series.

He is one of Luffy's frequent enemies. Despite their opposition, he assisted Luffy during the Arabasta arc. The two of them temporarily teamed up during the Punk Hazard arc. These temporary alliances lasted only long enough for the two groups to defeat their common foes.

Smoker’s Personality

Smoker has a reputation within his group for being a loose cannon and having a stubborn, rebellious attitude against even his superiors. He frequently clashes with his superiors because he disagrees with how they protect justice and peace by hiding the truth or undervaluing people who deserve it. Smoker does, however, demonstrate a desire to progress, if only to increase his scope for straightforward action.

Unlike many other marines, Smoker follows his own code of justice rather than Absolute Justice, which he subsequently preaches to his subordinate Tashigi. Smoker's sense of justice allows him to be flexible about whether he can consider an ally depending on the situation and what he sees while it is happening. The Straw Hat Pirates are the best example of this. Smoker constantly informs the Straw Hats that he will arrest them at any other moment, as required by his job as a Marine.

Smoker is a very severe and grim man who very infrequently, if ever, flashes a smile. When someone bothers him, he is frequently sarcastic and corrosive towards them. He becomes agitated by their foolish or stupid acts. Nonetheless, he is intensely committed and motivated to protect the weak and his subordinates from danger. He respects his associates as much as his peers and never takes advantage of his position for his own gain. Smoker has a kind personality despite his blue attitude, particularly among youngsters and people.

Smoker
Smoker

Smoker is ruthless regarding pirates and generally captures them with a simple but effective method. While acknowledging that not all Marines are as honorable as their public image and that not all allies should be trusted without question, he is committed to pursuing global justice against criminals and never forgets those who forsake the law and manage to elude his awareness. Smoker doubts even the Marines because he believes that it is likely that there are traitors among them.

As a result of his belief that the Seven Warlords of the Sea are nothing more than pirates ("once a pirate, always a pirate") and despite their employment by the World Government, Smoker rarely leaves them to manage their own affairs. He frequently harbors resentment towards pirates who have eluded him and other renowned pirates who stand in his path.

Since he goes by the name Smoker, it is apparent that he enjoys smoking cigars and is rarely photographed without at least one in his mouth. Additionally, he naturally prefers to walk around with his chest exposed. Rock balancing is Smoker's pastime. As a result, he does not appear to appreciate it when there is a lot of noise around him since it interferes with his ability to concentrate.

Smoker’s Appearance

Smoker is a strong, white-haired (light blue-green in the pre-time-skip anime), brown-eyed man who has an unusual habit of always being seen smoking two cigars at once. His eyes occasionally appeared to be crimson.

He sports a huge, bulky, white and blue specialist maritime jacket that he keeps open, lined with greenish fur at the neck, wrists, and hem. The word "justice" is printed in kanji on the back of the jacket. The garment has several cigars fastened on it. He carries a jitte with a Seastone tip. Along with blue jeans and a brown belt, he is also sporting large military-issue brown leather boots. He wore goggles while in Arabasta, where he rode a custom motorbike.

In the manga, his coat's fur was originally blue, then dark green, and finally changed to resemble the anime, albeit with a much lighter shade of green and with green zips. His hair has a white tone in the manga.

His hair has grown out, been pulled back, and the sides have been shaved after the time skip. He is now wearing sunglasses. His face is marked by a scar from his forehead to his right eye, and tapers off to the side. On top of his outfit, he dons the classic Marines military coat, slung over his shoulders like a cape with his jitte.

He had the same hairdo from before the time skip as a child. His face is seen to be filthy, with a runny nose and a bandage on his forehead, seeming as though he had just engaged in battle. He had goggles around his neck and a plain white shirt with no writing. He was dressed in a pair of basic black trousers and a pair of black boots. He carried a baseball bat with nails in it and wore a pair of mittens or boxing gloves. He was accompanied by a dog that appeared to be worn out.

Smoker’s Abilities

Smoker is a strong fighter who stands out from other Marines of his rank thanks to his Logia Devil Fruit skills and physical power. Before Luffy arrived, it was said that Smoker's arrival had resulted in a significant decrease in the amount of pirate activity in Loguetown, demonstrating his competence. He came very close to apprehending Luffy in the town. Luffy was only able to escape due to Dragon's interference. He once more fought Luffy during the Summit War of Marineford. He was on the verge of capturing him but couldn't due to Hancock's intervention.

Smoker
Smoker

Smoker's overall strength towards the end of the Summit War of Marineford gave him the self-assurance he needed to ask for a transfer to the G-5 Marine Branch in the New World. This branch's soldiers were rumored to be insane, cruel, and ruthless, regularly torturing pirates using various techniques. Although they had a reputation for disobeying orders, Smoker, who is very similar to them, won their loyalty and obedience to the point of worship. Smoker took control of the base after Vergo committed treason and died, essentially elevating himself to supreme authority within the branch.

Smoker surprised the Straw Hat captain, who questioned how "Tashigi'' had grown so strong since two years ago, by striking Luffy while having his mind transferred to Tashigi's body. Smoker also defeated some of Caesar's subordinates using only his standard arsenal of talents, despite not being in his natural form.

Smoker has exceptional memory and hearing. He is also an intelligent and skilful interrogator. Smoker is an exceptionally effective commander and strategist, mobilizing his soldiers in a clear-cut manner at times of crisis.

Smoker is incredibly physically strong, as seen by his muscular build. He was able to hold the pirate down during his fight with Luffy in Loguetown by pinning him down and jumping up nearly two stories without any trouble. He has extreme durability and resistance. Smoker has considerably increased in physical strength since the time skip. Additionally, he has enhanced strength and durability.

Devil Fruit

Smoker consumed the Moku Moku no Mi, a Logia type Devil Fruit that allows him to create, control, and change his body into smoke. He can control the smoke's density, even to the point of hardening it, allowing him to hold and restrain anyone inside it. Like most Logia users, he can fly by converting his lower body into smoke and shooting off like a rocket.

Smoker
Smoker

He can encircle his opponents with smoke to trap and/or bind them. Since smoke is a gas with high mobility and unpredictable movements, he can easily cover the battlefield as his opponents try to flee it. He can increase the density of his smoke once it has encircled his opponents, solidifying it and imprisoning his enemies.

Weapons

Nanashaku Jitte

Smoker's primary weapon is a large jitte with a Seastone tip, which has a sea-like effect on Devil Fruit users. Smoker uses this weapon to subdue criminal Devil Fruit users. Smoker is unaffected by it since just the tip is made of Seastone. The tip is always held in the air, and he is further shielded by his heavy garments. Because of the Seastone, the weapon does not burn up with him when he does. Instead, he carries it with him while he is in smoke form.

Smoker
Smoker

Smoker appears exceptionally skilled with the jitte, surprising enemies and using the weapon to perform powerful blunt assaults. In the manga, it has a white hilt, but in the anime, it has a red one. Additionally, it appears to be much longer in the manga and its related merchandise and products than in the anime, almost reaching Smoker's feet.

Billower Bike

Smoker
Smoker

Smoker used Billower Bike for ground transportation during the Arabasta arc. It has three wide wheels—two big ones in the back and a smaller one in front. His Moku Moku no Mi abilities propelled it, and the bike also allowed him to cross water.

Haki

Smoker can use Busoshoku Haki and Kenbunshoku Haki. However, it was only after the time skip when this ability was demonstrated.

Smoker’s Relationships

Marines

Smoker has a fairly well-known reputation among the Marines, though not always in a good way. He can make civilians and even some lower-ranking Marines uncomfortable, especially if he starts berating them. Smoker isn't averse to publicly opposing the World Government or the Marines.

Tashigi

Tashigi is close to him and is constantly by his side in a faithful manner. Smoker has Tashigi under his wing. Smoker has faith in her ability to make decisions and advises her to always be on the side of justice. He puts Tashigi in charge of his other subordinates when he needs to be absent from work because of his faith in her leadership skills.

Smoker
Smoker

Tashigi generally addresses her boss by the informal Japanese honorific "Smoker-san" rather than by the title other soldiers would use to address him, such as "Vice Admiral Smoker." She never questions or doubts his decisions or orders.

Hina

Smoker
Smoker

Hina is a personal friend of Smoker's from their training days. She has defended Smoker in the reportedly numerous circumstances where doing so would have resulted in his termination. Hina refers to him as Smoker-kun, a Japanese honorific often used for younger peers, but Smoker only uses Hina's first name while speaking to her (which, in Japanese, can either be interpreted as being close or disrespectful). Hina is accustomed to Smoker's stubbornness, fighting with him in a casual, occasionally harsh tone. She is also aware of his more vulnerable side, about which Smoker merely advised her to "mind her own business".

Kuzan

Smoker

Smoker and Kuzan appear to get along well. Even after Kuzan had left, he would later prevent Smoker from being killed by Donquixote Doflamingo because they were still friends, assuring Smoker that the former Admiral had not changed his ways since leaving the Marines and comforting him about some negative rumors about him.

Issho

Smoker
Smoker

Smoker seems to have gotten along well with Fujitora. Smoker was grateful to Fujitora for not allowing the government to conceal the events in Dressrosa like they did in Arabasta. He even acknowledged that if he were in Fujitora's position, he would not be able to accomplish the same feat.

G-5

Smoker
Smoker

The G-5 soldiers take care of Smoker's well-being and depend on him for leadership, just as he does for his troops. He orders Tashigi to keep them safe when he is not around.

Enemies

Monkey D. Luffy

Since the moment the pirate was about to be put to death by Buggy in Loguetown, Smoker has had a solid desire to capture Luffy. Smoker thought that Luffy might be a threat to the world because he noticed that his flashing smile was similar to Gol. D. Roger's from 22 years ago.

Smoker
Smoker

Smoker doesn't seem to be hated by Luffy. Much to Smoker's chagrin, Luffy even admitted that he liked the Marine. In the past, Smoker and Luffy had temporarily united to overthrow their shared enemies. However, Smoker still wants to arrest Luffy someday.

Monkey D. Dragon

Smoker
Smoker

During the Loguetown Arc, Smoker encountered Monkey D. Dragon, the Revolutionary Army's commander. Smoker was puzzled as to why someone like Dragon would help Luffy escape Marine's grasp. Smoker eventually discovered the connection between Dragon and Luffy, resolving the events of Loguetown.

Portgas D. Ace

Smoker

Smoker turned against Ace during the Arabasta Arc. When Ace blocked his path to defend Luffy, Smoker and Ace got into a battle, with Smoker cursing Luffy's brother for getting in the way of his pursuit.

Crocodile

Smoker

At Rain Dinners, Crocodile locked Smoker and the Straw Hat Pirates in a Seastone Cage. The leader of the Baroque Works intended to kill the marine captain and quiet him. Smoker was shocked to see Luffy working with Crocodile during the Summit War of Marineford.

Boa Hancock

Smoker
Smoker

Smoker tied down Luffy and tried to assassinate him, earning Hancock's hatred, and Hancock vowed to "rip him to shreds and feed him to beasts". Smoker cautioned Hancock that her behavior might cause her Warlord of the Sea rank to be withdrawn.

Donquixote Doflamingo

Smoker

Smoker refused to give the location of the newly formed Pirate Alliance when Donquixote Doflamingo demanded it when the latter arrived at Punk Hazard in search of Law and the Straw Hats. Smoker then mockingly brought up Vergo's role in the entire outbreak. Doflamingo was forced to try to silence the vice-admiral since he reasoned that Smoker had learned much about his criminal activities. Doflamingo spared Smoker's life after Aokiji's intervention because he didn't want to risk fighting a former Admiral.

Trafalgar D. Water Law

Smoker

At Punk Hazard, Smoker ran into Trafalgar Law and demanded information from the former Warlord regarding the island's mysteries. They engaged in combat, and Law eventually prevailed by using his Mes attack to steal Smoker's heart and exchanging Smoker and Tashigi's bodies to prevent them from getting in his way again. But once Law, Luffy, Smoker, and Tashigi were all taken prisoner by Caesar Clown, they came together to fight the villainous scientist and his ally Vergo. Later, Smoker and Law had a brief conversation while everyone else celebrated after Caesar's defeat.

Caesar Clown

Smoker posed a threat to Caesar's Punk Hazard operations. Caesar seems aware of Smoker's reputation as an uncompromising and intrusive marine when he calls the vice-admiral a "pain-in-the-neck". Caesar was happy when Law took Smoker's heart and gave it to him as a present. Caesar attempted to kill Smoker in retaliation for being defeated by Luffy, but he was unaware that the heart Law had given him was actually Monet's.

Vergo

Vergo put up a friendly façade to soldiers and citizens while still the base commander to prevent suspicions. He acknowledged having some qualms about Smoker's transfer to G-5. He mentioned that he had to pitch the strongest security to keep the recently transferred Marine from discovering his true alliance.

Smoker
Smoker

Vergo also stated his wish to kill Smoker and Tashigi "by accident" now that they knew his true nature. Smoker expressed contempt for his colleague's crimes after being freed from confinement. He vowed to fight him by himself as retaliation for his betrayal against the Marines.

Seven Warlords of the Sea

Smoker is well known for detesting the Seven Warlords of the Sea and considered them to be nothing more than rogues. He indirectly assisted in the collapse of the Warlord system.
