Tonjit has always enjoyed stilts and has devoted most of his adult life to perfecting the highest set. His fixation was so intense that he even dismissed the news of Gol D. Roger's death as insignificant. He pursued his passion in his early fifties using a pair of stilts that he had himself made out of bamboo from Long Ring Long Land. However, while he was ascending them, he became aware of his extreme acrophobia, which prevented him from dismounting out of fear.
He lost track of the rest of his tribe in the process, and when they ultimately made their annual migration without him, only his beloved horse Shelly remained. As the bamboo stilts grew over time, Tonjit was entrapped higher and higher. He was able to stay alive, nevertheless, by consuming fruit from the equally tall trees that were strewn over the environment.
The Straw Hat Pirates, led by Monkey D. Luffy, assaulted and shattered the stilts after they unintentionally stumbled into him almost 10 years later when Tonjit was saved. Initially misidentified as the kami of the bamboo, Tonjit quickly made friends with the Straw Hats and imparted all of his knowledge of Long Ring Long Land (along with some long-curdled milk). He was even more encouraged to see Shelly again, and he delighted in their reunion by giving her a delightful ride over the plains.
Foxy the Silver Fox, who callously shot Shelly on a whim, ended their reunion, nevertheless. Tony Tony Chopper swiftly fixed Shelly, but an enraged Tonjit threatened revenge with his own rifle. While nearly simultaneously accepting a Davy Back challenge against Foxy's gang out of concern for his safety, Luffy cautioned him down.
Tonjit was a supporter of the Straw Hats but stayed out of the Davy Back Fight that followed, even going to the Foxy Pirates' food stands. After the Foxy Pirates were vanquished and dispatched, Admiral Aokiji of Marine Headquarters was approached by Tonjit and the Straw Hats.
To their surprise, Aokiji created a sturdy passage around Long Ring Long Land using his Devil Fruit abilities. Exuberant, Tonjit loaded Shelly and all of his belongings onto a cart and, after saying a last, appreciative goodbye to the Straw Hats, quickly made it back to his tribe.
Tonjit read the most recent updates on the crew two years after his run-in with the Straw Hats while surrounded by a number of grandkids.
When Tonjit and Luffy first met, he acted as if he had known Luffy and Chopper his entire life and greeted them as such, only to quickly accept that they were complete strangers and calmly remark that explained why he didn't recognize them. Tonjit is a kind-hearted and hospitable, yet incredibly eccentric and absent-minded old man.
Due to his forgetfulness, he often acts recklessly and sometimes without thinking or taking important things into consideration, as when he attempted to set a world record for the tallest pair of stilts but failed to account for his fear of heights or how he would descend, leaving him stuck for ten years, or when he consumed some spoiled milk.
He cherishes his horse. He changes from his customary calm and laid-back demeanor to passionately meaning to fight Foxy after he shoots her, and she shares the same sentiments towards him.
Tonjit is a wrinkled, old guy with a full beard of white hair. He is toothless and has tiny, round eyes, a round nose, and other features. He wears a purple-brown hat with brown material on the sides and brown fur inside. He is dressed in a yellow tunic with a green inside and a circular pattern on the cuffs and side of the chest. His sash is purple and has a crimson thread hanging from it. He is wearing purple shoes with a grey toe and white strings holding them on.
He also sports purple and tan trousers with vertical zigzag stripes. He had the same outfit on when he was 22 years old, but his face was less wrinkled and his black beard was shorter. Additionally, he still had his teeth.
Tonjit has no martial skills, yet he is remarkably tough for a man of his age, surviving a very long fall with only a nosebleed. He also seems powerful enough to easily pull a wooden wagon that is several times his size.
Tonjit uses a musket, but its purpose is uncertain.
