Shanks, Chief of the Red Hair Pirates, gave Luffy his hat. This Straw Hat was initially worn by the King of the Pirates, Gol D. Roger, who gave it to Shanks, when he was a pirate apprentice under the Roger Pirates. About 13 years ago, Shanks and his crew arrived at the East Blue (Goa Kingdom), where Luffy met Shanks.
Ever since he was a child, Luffy kept talking about becoming a pirate, and requested Shanks over and over to allow him to sail with him whenever he and the crew departed from the Goa Kingdom. While Shanks kept making fun of Luffy for being a child and wanting to become a pirate, it was merely because Shanks knew that the life of a pirate is dangerous in every step of the way.
When Shanks was ready to set sail to continue his journey to the North, Luffy stood before him and declared that one day he would gather a crew as strong as Shanks’, and eventually conquer the seas to become the King of the Pirates. Even though he was just a child back then, those words moved Shanks as he realized that Luffy was being serious.
He handed over the Straw Hat to Luffy in exchange for the promise of keeping it safe and returning it to Shanks, once Luffy becomes a great pirate.
Thus since the age of 7, Luffy has worn this hat and always spoke about how important it is to him. 10 years later, Luffy set sail from his hometown as a pirate to gather his crew and begin his journey. As time passed, he made a name for himself with every major incident he caused around the world and became renowned among the people as, “Straw Hat Luffy”.
