Shanks was born in the West Blue and grew up in a small village. Gol D. Roger found Shanks in a treasure chest when he was just a one-month-old baby and he was then taken in by the crew. Roger made him and Buggy his apprentice. Roger even handed the Straw Hat that he was wearing to Shanks. Shanks then took part in a lot of the crew activities.

During their time as the crew members of the Roger Pirates, Shanks and Buggy spent the majority of their time arguing. But despite their fights, these two members were always seen together. Shanks and Buggy talked about a hidden treasure and Shanks said that a treasure is not the most important thing in a Pirate's life. Buggy eventually found the map of the hidden treasure but kept the information to himself as he didn't want anyone else finding out about it. The same night, Shanks and Buggy were talking about what they would do after they leave the Roger Pirates.

Buggy said that he would love to take in Shanks but Shanks declined, saying that they both had different ideals and they should forge their own paths. They both then agreed that once they left the crew, they would meet again as enemies. Shanks told Buggy about the Devil Fruit that they had acquired and Buggy started scheming on how he could take the devil fruit.

The next day Buggy replaced the devil fruit with its fake version and took it with him. When he had successfully stolen the fruit and was carrying it with him, he stumbled upon Shanks and in an attempt to hide the stolen devil fruit, he hid it in his mouth and accidentally swallowed it. Shanks then noticed a map (the one which Buggy had found) floating away in the ocean and told Buggy. When Buggy realized what it was, he quickly jumped in to save it but he didn't know that his ability to swim was no longer present and he started struggling. Shanks saw this and quickly jumped in to save Buggy.

After Roger became the Pirate King, the crew was disbanded and everyone left one by one. Shanks asked Buggy if he wanted to join his crew but Buggy refused and they went their own ways. Shanks was also present during Roger's execution and he cried seeing his captain pass away. Shanks then formed his own Pirate crew known as the Red Hair Pirates and sailed the ocean.

When Shanks and his crew were stationed in Foosha Village, they met Luffy. After the crew was in the village for over a year, Luffy expressed his interest in joining the crew and he even stabbed himself under his left eye to prove that he was worthy enough to join the crew. Luffy tried his best to convince Shanks to join his crew. In the bar, Luffy found the Gomu Gomu no Mi fruit and ate it, not knowing that it was a devil fruit. When a brawl broke out in the bar, Luffy was angry, but Shanks stopped him. When Luffy tried to escape, his arm stretched and that's when Shanks and his crew were shocked that Luffy had eaten their devil fruit and they told Luffy wouldn't be able to swim for the rest of his life.

One day, when Luffy was sitting at the bar, Higuma's gang came back and Luffy picked a fight with them but they overpowered Luffy. The Red Hair Pirates arrived to fight them but then Higuma threw a smoke bomb to distract them and escaped with Luffy. He then threw Luffy into the sea and the Sea King was about to attack Luffy, but Shanks arrived just in time and scared the Sea King away. Luffy was sad at the fact that Shanks lost his left arm due to him saving Luffy.

After the Red Hair Pirates left Foosha Village for good, Luffy decided that he would set sail and make his own crew. Shanks teased him but Luffy declared that he would become the King of the Pirates and make a crew stronger than Shanks. Shanks then gave Luffy his straw hat and told him to return it when he became a great pirate.

Shanks is known to have really good leadership skills and charisma. With the help of these qualities he can gain the trust and loyalty of a lot of people and this helped him recruit his crew members. He is also quite skilled at infiltrating and stealth missions.

He is also a really great swimmer and is known to have swum into the deep depth of the ocean to save Buggy and even rescue Luffy. He also has an incredible amount of physical strength and he could even rival the master swordsman Dracula Mihawk. He put his power into his swordsmanship and is able to even match Whitebeard. With the help of his Busoshoku Haki he could even defend against Akainu.

Special abilities of Shanks

Haki

Shanks was one of the few people who could use all three types of haki. He knew how to use the Hoashoku Haki, which allows the users to exert their willpower over others. He is a master in this haki and only a few including him have mastered this type of haki. He can be seen using this haki when he intimidated the Sea King, when he went to meet Whitebeard on the Moby Dick. Shanks is able to knock a lot of people unconscious with his haki.

He can also use the Busoshoku Haki, which allows users to use their spiritual energy to create an invisible armor around themselves, giving them offensive and defensive capabilities. He is quite proficient in using it and very skilled at it too. With the help of this Haki he was able to defend himself against Akainu.

Lastly, Shanks even possessed the Kenbunshoku Haki, which allows the users to use the sixth sense to sense the presence, strength and emotions of others. It even gave the user prerogative abilities.

Weapon

Shanks is seen carrying around a large Saber with a single edge blade and a large hand guard. He coats his sword in a fiery aura while fighting his enemies.
