The Hie Hie no Mi is a Logia-type Devil Fruit that transforms the user into a Freezing Human, allowing them to create, control and manipulate ice at will. It was consumed by Kuzan, better known as Admiral Aokiji.
The fruit’s abilities were first seen after the Davy Back Fight Arc.

At some point in the past, Kuzan, better known as Aokiji, consumed the Hie Hie no Mi (Ice-Ice) Devil Fruit. The fruit’s appearance is unknown.
The main strength of this fruit is that it allows the user to create and manipulate ice on an enormous scale, mainly to freeze their surroundings. Even by Logia standards, this power is exceptionally effective because it can permanently change the temperature of one side of an island, turning it into an uninhabitable wasteland. Kuzan can also move quickly over enormous distances by turning his entire body into ice.
It is an interesting fact to know that this fruit’s user can be hit by attacks unlike other Logia users, who can transform into their respective elements and escape from harm's way. This is mainly due to the fact that ice is a solid element, and as a result, the user cannot simply dissolve away from danger like most Logia-users can with their fluid bodies, and it takes longer for the body to build after damage.
However, because of their ice bodies, the majority of attacks are still useless since the body can easily shatter and the ice can rebuild on impact. It is also shown that the user can control the ice in his body by molding and changing its shape.
Any object that comes into contact with the user is immediately frozen regardless of whether the user grabs the enemy or the enemy makes physical contact with the user. Also, the target will suffer frostbite and suffer tissue damage, if the frostbitten area is not treated properly. If the target’s body is completely frozen, they can survive for a while and be saved if properly thawed out, but they will be left in a highly brittle state that will instantly kill them. If eternal heat is applied, it will cause the target’s frozen tissues to crack, so the victim’s body must produce heat internally by applying low temperature water to it continuously, until it is defrosted and then the frozen area is to be massaged.
Kuzan is able to move around in cold environments with no protection because of his Devil Fruit’s elemental resilience to cold. The ice can also cancel out fire if they clash with it. However, there are certain Elemental Devil Fruit users, whose abilities cannot be nullified by the user’s own Elemental Devil Fruit powers.
The majority of this Devil Fruit’s attack requires Kuzan to make physical contact with his enemies in order to effectively freeze them, but Kuzan has discovered ways to increase his range of attacks by forging ice spears or tridents.
The user is vulnerable to the standard Devil Fruit flaws, but the ability to create and manipulate ice, gives the user one of the few abilities known to be able to counter the usual Devil Fruit weaknesses of falling into the water. By simply freezing the liquid and producing a surface to stand on, the user can avoid sinking and drowning.
As shown by Kuzan, the main ability of this fruit is for battle combat purposes. Kuzan has incredible control of ice and can use it to create weapons or freeze his opponents. He can instantly transform a vast amount of salt sea water into a big ice sheet and produce enough ice to freeze a giant, a Sea Beast, or a human. Kuzan even managed to stop two tsunamis.
Kuzan’s main method of attack using his abilities is to paralyze and freeze his opponents, freezing their bodies solid by only touching them, and endangering their fragile forms by either directly contacting them or by using ice pillar extensions. To compensate for his otherwise necessary physical touch, his other main ability is to build ice-based weaponry to spear his opponents. He can also irritate his opponents by using ice.
Kuzan has also demonstrated the ability to cross an ocean using his ice. He either makes a wide area of sea frozen so that others can walk through it, or he makes a small ice path so that he can ride his bicycle, the Ao Chari, over it. Kuzan is one of the few Devil Fruit users who has demonstrated the ability to modify his powers for travel. He has also created a prosthetic leg using his Devil Fruit powers.
Kuzan has demonstrated the following abilities using his Devil Fruit powers:
This is the form of attack that is only used close to a body of water, such as the ocean. Kuzan can turn the water and anything in it into solid ice. He can use this technique by dipping his hands directly into the water or by projecting an ice pillar into the water from his hands. The ice can spread for miles and form a very thick sheet that lasts for more than a week before melting, making his attack exceedingly effective on a very large scale.
Kuzan creates a large, angular blade of hard ice that can combat real steel swords. Kuzan gathers and throws up numerous grass blades, blowing a chilly breath on them to cause them to solidify into the shape of a sword.
Kuzan touches the person he is battling to turn them into an ice statue. The victim in question can survive in their prison in a state of suspended animation for a while, but any decent blow will shatter them to pieces. However, if the ice is immediately and carefully melted, a sufferer can recover without experiencing any long-term effects. However, the ice can be shattered from the inside out.
Kuzan condenses the chilly air surrounding him into many ice spears, which he then throws at his opponent.
Kuzan sends a wave of ice over the earth, and everything the wave touches turns into ice.
Kuzan can freeze his opponent in an ice orb from a distance.
In a single blow, Kuzan unleashes a huge wave of ice in the shape of a pheasant, presumably the source of the nickname Kuzan was given. It should be noted that only the pheasant’s wings were visible in the panel in manga. The pheasant, however, was depicted in detail in the anime, as if Kuzan had created it out of living ice and endowed it with the capability to fly.
This is a non-canon technique, which is demonstrated in the Video Game, One Piece: Pirate Warriors. In this technique, Kuzan launches an ice dart at his opponent.
This is a non-canon technique, which is demonstrated in the Video Game, One Piece: Pirate Warriors. In this technique, Kuzan freezes the water vapor into a massive block of ice, which he then drops down onto his target.
This is a non-canon technique, which is demonstrated in the Video Game, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2. In this technique, Kuzan freezes his opponent with a blizzard and leaps into the sky and creates a large-scale Partisan to finish them off.
This technique has been demonstrated in a SBS volume of manga, in which Kuzan's female counterpart created artificial nails when instructed to draw the admirals with their genders reversed.
A. The Hie Hie no Mi allows its user to create and manipulate ice, transforming the user into a Freezing Human.
A. The Hie Hie no Mi is one of the strongest Logia-type Devil Fruits, as it not only grants the user exceptional combat abilities, but it also gives them the power to counteract the standard Devil Fruit flaw, i.e, drowning into the sea, by turning the ocean surface into ice, allowing the user to travel on its surface.
