History and Appearance of the Magu Magu no Mi

At some point in the past, Sakazuki, better known as Akainu, consumed the Magu Magu no Mi. The fruit’s deadly abilities were demonstrated during the Summit War of Marineford. The fruit’s appearance is unknown.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Magu Magu no Mi

Strengths

This Logia-type Devil Fruit is formidable even for its own class, especially in terms of offense. The main ability of this Devil Fruit is that it allows its user to transform into, possess, and create lava (molten rock) in order to assault their enemy.

An iceberg can be instantaneously vapourized by the extreme heat, and any ocean that the magma happens to land in can be boiled. This power was potent enough to turn one half of an island’s weather permanently into a raging inferno throughout the course of a ten-day war.

Unless the person has Busoshoku Haki, it can let physical attacks like punches and slashes harmlessly pass through them. The person would suffer severe injuries or burns if someone attempted to attack the user with their own body because of the fruit’s natural element. Swords and other weapons have also been shown to melt when they come into contact with Akainu.

The ability of this fruit is inherently superior to that of the fire-controlling Mera Mera no Mi since the magma it produces has the power to consume the opposing flames and destroy the fire-based intangibility, which could damage the user.

Weaknesses

This fruit’s powers do not appear to be weak against anything in particular but there are certain objects or powers that this fruit cannot encounter or burn.

The user can also suffer damage by touching a seastone, being caught off guard (if they haven’t been trained to morph automatically), and coming under attack from the fruit’s elemental weakness (though no such weakness has been canonically revealed so far).

Busoshoku Haki is able to get over its intangibility, much like any Devil Fruit. Sakazuki did, however, show some resistance to Haki-powered assaults. Apart from these, the user is vulnerable to the standard Devil Fruit flaws.

Usage and Techniques of the Magu Magu no Mi

Sakazuki’s trademark attack involves turning his fist into magma and expanding it while moving forward, usually in the form of a punch. In the anime, it is also shown that Sakazuki can launch his magma fists much like a rocket punch.

His body heat has been shown to melt the opponent's weapons in his immediate vicinity simply by forming an attack. He has repeatedly shown his ability to easily pierce through the bodies of his opponents with his might, and as a result of using just one of his methods.

The magma-based assaults feature extremely explosive qualities in addition to great corrosion and temperatures; one attack is enough to set off an explosion that can cause significant damage across the entire battlefield.

When it comes to propulsion, Sakazuki has the ability to hurl himself like a real volcano blast in the direction of his aim and even melt solid rock and dirt to create tunnels for underground travel.

Sakazuki has demonstrated the following techniques using his fruit’s powers:

Dai Funka (Great/Major Eruption)

This is Sakazuki’s signature technique in which he turns his fist, mainly the right, into pure magma, expands it, and then launches it forward like an enormous rocket, scorching everything in its path. The enormous fist could also be made to explode, shattering into little meteor-like pieces of volcanic rock as they fall to the ground. After this one attack, onlookers have claimed that the battleground below resembled the end of the world.

Ryusei Kazan (Meteor Volcano)

This technique is similar to Dai Funka, but in this several enormous magma fists are used instead of one. Sakazuki raises both fists into the air and unleashes a barrage of magmic fists that rain down on the battlefield and do massive area damage in a manner that mimics a volcano eruption and meteor shower.

The aime also added a fireworks sound effect during the shooting and dropping of the meteoric fists. Also, the meteoric fists were first seen flying high into the sky and above the clouds then falling back down after a delay as if genuinely descending from space. Additionally, Ryusei Kazan was demonstrated by Sakazuki in the anime as a close-range, quick-projectile assault.

Inugami Guren (Dog Biting Crimson Lotus)

In this technique, Sakazuki summons a wave of magma that he directs at his enemy in the form of a fanged dog head. This technique’s name is given in the anime, however, it is unidentified in the manga.

In the video game Giant Battle, this technique is called Gansho Kenga, though it is unknown whether it was a name officially given or not by Oda.

The technique’s name riffs on the Japanese mythological term inugami, which translates to “dog god/spirit” and describes how the spirits of dogs inhabit humans (similar to kitsunetsuki).

Meigo (Dark Hound)

In this technique, Sakazuki turns his palm into magma and unleashes a claw thrust towards the enemy. The way this technique is used in the anime is different due to the strict censorship of the gore: Sakazuki uses a molten rock fist to punch into and pierce his opponent’s body in a manner reminiscent of Dai Funka, then detonates it to fill the victim’s body with magma and causes severe internal damage.

Bakuretsu Kazan (Exploding Volcano)

This is a non-cannon technique which is demonstrated in the video game; One Piece: Pirate Warriors. Sakazuki punches the earth after turning his hand into magma. This causes a volcanic explosion that damages everyone nearby by erupting around the region that was punched and numerous spots nearby.

Kazan Bakuhatsu (Volcano Explosion)

This is a non-cannon technique which is demonstrated in the Pirate Warriors. In this technique, Sakazuki executes his standard attack string finisher to quickly erupt lava balls from beneath his target's feet in a variation of the above used as a CPU-only move in the game. This attack also appears in Pirate Warriors 4 as one of his unlockable R2 special attacks.

You’re Next!

This is a non-cannon technique which is demonstrated in the video game; One Piece: Burning Blood. In this technique, in order to accomplish an uppercut, Sakazuki turns his entire body into magma, and then makes a punch with his right fist after the uppercut when facing a single opponent.

When battling a team of opponents, the uppercut will make the opponent switch positions, and the subsequent assault will hit the teammate who took their place.
