In the past, a crew in the East Blue had bound the Mera Mera no Mi and kept it in their chest. None of those crew members got to eat that devil fruit as their ship got wrecked on an island and the chest remained there. After many years, the chest was eaten by a giant bird. Years after that, Ace and another crewmate ended up on that island and they encountered that bird, who in turn tried to eat Ace's crewmate. Ace defeated the bird and the bird spit out the chest that was in its belly, before running away. When Ace and his crewmate looked inside the box, they saw the Mera Mera no Mi. As they didn't know it was a devil fruit, they were fighting over who would eat it as they both were hungry. They eventually decided that they should split it. Ace took the first bite and obtained the fruit's powers. He later on joined the Whitebeard Pirates.
During the Marineford War, after Akainu killed Ace, the fruit reappeared somewhere else in the world. Donquixote Doflamingo, who was in the war, somehow obtained the fruit. Doflamingo then made the Mera Mera no Mi the grand prize of the tournament that was being held in the Corrida Colosseum on Dressrosa. He had done this so that he could break apart Luffy and Law's alliance. It was revealed during the tournament that the devil fruit belonged to Portgas D. Ace, the son of the former King of the Pirates. As Doflamingo predicted, Luffy couldn't stand the idea of his brother's devil fruit to be taken by anyone and he then participated in the tournament to win it back. Luffy knew that he couldn't consume another devil fruit, so he offered Franky the fruit when he won it. Franky refused as he wanted to keep his ability to swim. There were a lot of people who took part in the tournament for their own selfish reasons too.
When Sabo destroyed the Colosseum, he grabbed the Mera Mera no Mi and ate it. Thus he became the new wielder of it. He wanted to inherit Ace's will and he stayed true to his word. The first thing he did was use Ace's signature move to fight off his enemies.
The Mera Mera no Mi is round in shape and orange in color. It has many flame shaped components with a swirl pattern on each of them. It also has a swirled stem on the top.
The major strength of this fruit is that like the usual Logia-type users, they can produce and become the element they control, in this case fire. The user can create devastating fire based attacks and they also have high resistance to heat based attacks. The user can use their fire to increase the force of their physical attacks. When the user turns into fire, any attack that comes towards them passes through them harmlessly. When the user clashes with another Logia user, the elements clash with each other or they cancel out each other.
Even though the Mera Mera no Mi is a strong devil fruit, it still has its weaknesses. The Mera Mera no mi is inferior to the Magu Magu no Mi. This is because magma is hotter than fire, thus it overwhelms the power of the Mera Mera no Mi. The magma can even neutralize the heat of the Mera Mera no Mi, thus the user can be burned and become vulnerable. Other than that, they have the standard devil fruit weakness, which is the inability to swim.
Ace had used his devil fruit powers in various ways. Ace uses his power for combat and also to propel his raft. Ace has also sunk down a lot of battleships and burned down cities with the help of his powers. It was also seen that Ace once used his devil fruit powers to save a Marine. Even though he was severely injured during his fight with Blackbeard, Ace was still able to use his fruit's power to do some damage to Blackbeard.
After Sabo ate the Mera Mera no Mi, he was able to utilize it effectively just after consuming it. Even though he was struggling with it, soon enough he adapted and started having great control over his powers. He is able to use it along with his pipe to avoid injuries by making himself intangible. Sabo also enhanced his powers to increase the destructive power in his claws to overwhelm his enemies.
The techniques used by Portgas D. Ace and Sabo are:
In this technique, Ace shoots a stream of fire from the palm of his hand.
In this technique, Ace creates a circle of fire around a selected area and prevents anyone from entering or leaving it.
This is Ace's signature technique. In this technique, Ace turns his fists into flames and launches it as a dense column of fire at his opponent.
In this technique, Ace points the index and middle finger of both of his hands at his opponent like a gun and shoots fire from his fingertips like bullets.
In this technique, Ace creates large amounts of flames around his body to prepare for an attack.
In this technique, Ace creates many small, glowing greenish-yellow fireballs that float around his enemies and then attack them.
In this technique, Ace hurls long lances made out of fire. These lances have the combined effect of simultaneously burning an opponent while piercing them.
In this technique, Ace places his index finger together in a cross shape before launching a cross-shaped column of fire directly at his opponent.
This is Ace's ultimate attack. In this technique, Ace creates a large amount of fire and focuses it on one point. He then turns it into a giant fireball resembling the sun and hurls it at his enemies, trying to obliterate them.
In this technique, Ace releases a wall of fire to block an attack.
This was Ace's signature move which Sabo inherited. In this technique, Sabo, just like Ace, turns his fists into flames and launches them as a dense column of fire at his opponent.
In this technique, Sabo combines his devil fruit powers with his Busoshoku Haki-infused talons and slams them into his opponent, spinning them around before blasting his enemy with a burst of fire.
