Nico Olvia is the mother of Nico Robin, a member of the Straw Hat Pirates. She was also the older sister of Oran and the paternal aunt of Mizuira.
She was an archaeologist from Ohara, an island in the West Blue that was famous for its scholars and researchers.
She dedicated her life to studying the Poneglyphs, ancient stone tablets that contain the true history of the world, especially the mysterious Void Century, a 100-year period that was erased from official records by the World Government.
Because of her research, she was considered a criminal and hunted by the Marines. She was captured and tortured but managed to escape with the help of a former Marine named Jaguar D. Saul, who became her friend.
She returned to Ohara and reunited with her daughter briefly before the World Government ordered a Buster Call, a devastating attack that destroyed the island and killed most of its inhabitants.
She sacrificed herself to save Robin and entrusted her with the task of finding the truth about the world. She was 33 years old when she died and had a bounty of 79 million berries on her head.

At the age of twenty-seven, after her husband's death, Nico Olvia embarked on a six-year expedition with thirty-three other archaeologists to study the Poneglyph. She reluctantly left her daughter, Robin, in the care of her brother and his wife.
Towards the end of their six-year journey, their ship was intercepted by the Marines. Olvia's colleagues fought valiantly to protect her, but sadly, they all perished, leaving Olvia as the sole survivor. She was captured by the Marines and subsequently interrogated by Jaguar D. Saul before being imprisoned.
Jaguar D. Saul, who was disillusioned by the World Government's sense of justice, ultimately released Olvia and aided her in escaping aboard a Marine ship. While she was grateful to Saul for his help, she couldn't forgive him for his part in stopping their research expedition and for the loss of her comrades.
Upon returning to Ohara, Olvia visited the Tree of Knowledge's library. She apologized to her fallen colleagues for not completing their expedition and for unwittingly putting Ohara in conflict with the World Government. However, her colleagues, understanding the constant struggle between scholars and the World Government due to their knowledge of Poneglyphs and Ancient Weapons, offered apologies to Olvia for sending her on such a perilous mission.
While trying to warn her fellow scholars about the imminent threat, Nico Olvia learned that a World Government ship had arrived on their shore. In response, she quickly grabbed a rifle and headed in the direction of the ship, unaware that her daughter, Robin, had just passed by her, going in the opposite direction.
Upon reaching Spandine, Olvia used her rifle to intimidate him. Spandine, the leader of CP9, revealed that the World Government battleships were there to destroy Ohara as a warning to all Poneglyph researchers. He then ordered his subordinates to subdue her, and Olvia was knocked out and apprehended. She was presented before the incapacitated scholars to demonstrate their association with her, effectively proving their "guilt."
After Clover's revelation to the World Government, Olvia was confronted by Robin as she was being taken away. Eventually, under Robin's pleas, she acknowledged her relationship with her daughter. As the Buster Call operation was about to commence, Spandine ordered Olvia to be taken with them, but he fled in panic after nearly being hit by an explosion.
Nico Olvia was separated from the other scholars and finally reunited with her daughter. Overjoyed, she hugged Robin and expressed her pride in her. She implored Saul to take Robin to safety and urged her daughter to live, continue preserving history, and embrace life to the fullest.
Olvia and the other scholars tried to protect the Tree of Knowledge, but it eventually succumbed to the flames. In her final moments, Olvia regretted not leaving more words of motherly wisdom to her daughter. When the tree fell, she, along with the other scholars, was believed to have perished.
Nico Olvia was a brave, determined, and selfless person. She was well aware of the World Government's hostility towards Ohara and the risks associated with searching for Poneglyphs. Nevertheless, she embarked on this perilous journey to reveal the true history of the Void Century, demonstrating her unwavering determination to uncover the truth.
Her deep maternal love for her daughter, Robin, is another significant aspect of her character. Although leaving Robin behind was painful, Olvia's selflessness shines through when she sends her daughter away with Saul during the Tree of Knowledge's fire. This act highlights her love and sacrifice for the well-being and future of her child.
Despite the challenges and persecution faced by her people, Olvia remains hopeful and selfless. She is willing to stay behind in a dangerous situation to save valuable books and preserve knowledge for future generations. This reflects her noble character and dedication to the preservation of history and truth.
Nico Olvia shares many physical features with her daughter Robin, particularly in their facial and eye characteristics, with both having similar-shaped eyes (brown in the manga and blue in the anime). However, Olvia's hair is notably different, being long, slightly curly, and white, which sets her apart from Robin, who has black hair.
Upon returning from her prison, Olvia adopts a completely different attire. She wears a fur-lined coat over a light blue T-shirt and long green trousers. A belt with golden disk-like ornaments adorns her waist, and she wears a modest necklace with a thin rope and three small pearls around her neck.
As a scholar from Ohara, Olvia had the rare skill of reading Poneglyphs, which are crucial for uncovering the hidden history of the Void Century and the locations of ancient weapons.
Her deep knowledge of history, coupled with her determination, allowed her to withstand imprisonment by the World Government without revealing her origins.
Olvia's remarkable resilience was evident when she survived a beating from CP9 members and still had the strength to assist her companions in preserving historical books.
Additionally, she demonstrated proficiency in marksmanship by using a rifle to intimidate her targets.
Olvia had a deep and loving relationship with her daughter, Nico Robin. She was very fond of Robin and took pride in her intelligence, especially her ability to decipher Poneglyphs.
However, Olvia's life's work as an archaeologist called her away, forcing her to leave Robin behind on Ohara. She regretted not being there for her daughter but died proud of Robin's accomplishments and abilities.
Olvia held her husband in high high regard. She left Ohara to study the Poneglyphs to honor his wishes, suggesting a sense of duty and respect for his memory..
Oran, a fellow archaeologist on Ohara, accepted responsibility for caring for Robin upon Olvia's departure, despite his wife, Roji, being against it.
Olvia initially held Jaguar D. Saul, a giant Vice Admiral, in contempt for his role in the destruction of Ohara and the murder of her colleagues. She resented him for blindly complying with the World Government's policies without knowing the full situation.
Despite her resentment, Olvia was concerned for Saul and warned him that he could never return to the Marines due to his treasonous actions.
Eventually, she entrusted Saul with protecting her daughter, Robin, and evacuating her from Ohara.
The name Olvia may be a reference to Olbia, an ancient Greek city in Ukraine, which is fitting given her profession as an archaeologist.
When Robin's updated (pre-timeskip) wanted poster was released, it bore a striking similarity to how Olvia's poster looked. Both posters focus on the right side of the character's face, which is placed toward the left of the shot, with some sort of destructive implications in the background (flames in Olvia's poster, heavy smoke in Robin's).
Olvia shares her birthday with her daughter.
In both the Japanese and English anime, she has the same voice actress as Robin.
Nico Olvia ranked 44th in the third popularity poll, 122nd in the fourth, 108th in the sixth, and 160th in the seventh.
Olvia's favorite foods are sugar toast and coffee.
