Jaguar D. Saul’s History

Saul is a giant, but not from Elbaf; he was born in the South Blue. He became a Marine and reached the rank of Vice Admiral. Before the main story, he traveled through the Grand Line, encountering many Devil Fruit users.

During the Edd War, three years before the Pirate King's death, Saul was in Marineford and discussed the Marines' efforts to arrest Gold Roger with Garp, Kuzan, Sakazuki, and Tsuru.

While on duty, Saul's ship encountered a group of archaeologists from Ohara, who were seeking to decode mysterious poneglyphs with ancient history. Saul's crew was ordered to capture them, but they ended up killing all but one, Nico Olvia.

Sengoku then selected Saul as one of the five vice admirals to lead a Buster Call against Ohara for their crime of deciphering the poneglyphs. Saul, however, began to question the World Government's actions and grew disgusted with their brutal intentions. After questioning Olvia and learning more about the situation, he was disgusted by the situation and defected from the World Government by releasing her.

Saul was shipwrecked and ended up in Ohara, where he met Nico Robin. They became friends, and Robin visited him while he built a raft. When he finished the raft, Robin told him about her mother and the impending Buster Call to destroy Ohara due to the scholars studying the Poneglyphs.

Upon seeing the Marine battleships gathering for the Buster Call, Saul rushed to find Robin, who had reunited with her mother. He promised Olvia to protect her daughter and carried Robin to the shore. However, the Marines spotted them and opened fire. Saul retaliated by picking up one ship and throwing it into another.

He urged Robin to go to the evacuation ship, but she was refused entry. Saul tried to charge at the CP9 ship, but Kuzan intercepted him. Their argument about Justice was interrupted by the evacuation ship exploding. Saul attempted to escape with Robin, but Kuzan froze him in place. Before being completely encased in ice, Saul encouraged Robin to escape and find friends at sea.

After the Marines left Ohara, Saul survived the Buster Call and being frozen by Kuzan. He led a group of giants to retrieve the books thrown into the lake by the scholars and transported them to Elbaf. Saul later shared this information with Vegapunk, who visited the library on Elbaf, setting Vegapunk on a path to uncover the truth of the Void Century.

Jaguar D. Saul’s Personality

Saul is a kind-hearted and timid giant. He questioned the Marines' orders when he felt they were morally wrong. He values moral justice over the code of Absolute Justice followed by the Marines.

He couldn't understand why the Marines would need to slaughter innocent archaeologists who had no means to fight back. He also chose to protect Robin when he saw a former colleague destroy a ship of innocent civilians who had no connection to the incident at hand.

While he found the Elbaf giants somewhat barbaric and didn't follow their tradition of fighting to the death, he trusted them and led a group of Elbaf giants to save the books saved by the scholars of Ohara. Saul was dedicated to preserving Ohara's knowledge and trusted Vegapunk enough to allow him to read the entire library.

Saul has a unique and awkward laugh (Dereshishishishi) and enjoys seeing others laugh and have fun. Like other "D's" before him, he was seen laughing before his apparent death.

Jaguar D. Saul’s Appearance

Saul, being a giant, dwarfs humans by a significant margin. He possesses long, vibrant orange hair and sports a massive beard that encircles his entire face, somewhat resembling a lion's majestic mane.

During his tenure as a vice admiral, Saul adhered to the Marine uniform, donning a standard Marine coat like other high-ranking officers. However, after his defection, he cast aside his Marine attire. When he crash-landed on Ohara, he was dressed in a black shirt and slightly worn gray jeans. As a Marine, he had worn the Marine cap, but upon his defection, he opted for a cowboy's hat.

Notably, while leading a group of Elbaf giants in their mission to recover books from Ohara, Saul was often seen wrapped in bandages.

Jaguar D. Saul’s Abilities

As a former Navy Vice Admiral, Saul held command over lower-ranking subordinates and could lead a Buster Call with other Vice Admirals. However, his defection led to the loss of these privileges.

Saul is well-prepared for the challenges of the Grand Line and is not surprised or scared by Devil Fruit users. He even admired their incredible abilities. He possesses basic survival skills, such as fishing for food and building rafts.

In terms of physical abilities, being a giant, Saul has extraordinary strength, even surpassing most giants. He can effortlessly lift a massive Buster Call ship out of the water and destroy it. His durability is also remarkable, as he could withstand explosions from direct cannonball hits. He also survived being completely frozen over by then-Vice Admiral Kuzan.

It's worth noting that all Vice Admirals possess Haki, and Saul is likely proficient in using this ability as well.

Jaguar D. Saul’s Relationships

Nico Robin

Saul played a significant role in Nico Robin's life. He was the first person to befriend her when she found him washed up on Ohara's shore. He encouraged her to laugh, even when she was sad, as a way to cope with her hardships. Saul told Robin that she would find friends who would protect her, just moments before his death. Robin mourned his loss, along with the destruction of her home and the death of her mother.

Saul's influence on Robin is also related to her knowledge of the "Will of D." She asked Monkey D. Luffy about the significance of the "Will of D." after her experience with Saul, although Luffy didn't have an answer.

Twenty-two years later, Robin learned that Saul was alive and in hiding on Elbaf, a revelation that moved her to tears when Shaka shared the information, even though she couldn't directly confirm Saul's name.

Kuzan

Saul had a good friendship with Vice Admiral Kuzan (later known as Admiral Aokiji). They shared similar views on Moral Justice. Although their friendship couldn't save Saul, Kuzan allowed Robin to live as a final favor to Saul.

Nico Olivia

Saul initially had a hostile interaction with Nico Olvia, as he was responsible for capturing her and her colleagues, who were archaeologists from Ohara. Olvia berated Saul for blindly complying with the World Government's orders and not knowing the entire situation. Saul realized she was correct and began to question the World Government's actions.

This eventually led him to release Olvia, thus defecting from the Marines. Olvia entrusted him with protecting her daughter, Nico Robin, and evacuating her from Ohara. Saul encouraged Robin to be proud of her mother and the other archaeologists for their defiance of the World Government.

Marines

Saul's defiance of the World Government's orders and his actions to preserve Ohara's knowledge put him at odds with the Marines, even though he was a former Marine Vice Admiral. He questioned the morality of their actions and was willing to betray their orders to protect the innocent.

His actions went against the code of Absolute Justice followed by the Marines. After the Buster Call on Ohara, Saul saved the books that contained the forbidden knowledge, effectively undermining the purpose of the Marines' mission to destroy that knowledge.
