While pregnant with Ace before Roger's death, Rouge resided on Baterilla in South Blue. She astonishingly extended her pregnancy to twenty months through sheer determination, concealing Ace's ties with the Pirate King.
When she finally gave birth, she cradled the child and named him "Gol D. Ace." Sadly, the strain of holding Ace for so long took a toll on her, and she passed away due to exhaustion shortly after childbirth.
Ace recognized the sacrifice she made to protect him from the World Government and felt indebted to her. In her honor, he adopted "Portgas" as his surname as a testament to her bravery and love.
Although limited information is available about Rouge's personality, she appeared to possess great kindness and love. Her ultimate act of sacrifice, enduring extreme hardship to ensure her baby's birth, speaks of her selflessness.
Additionally, she exhibited characteristics often associated with the "Will of D.," including a powerful resolve, even smiling just before her passing.
Rouge had a slender figure and long, wavy pink-blonde hair. She adorned her hair with a pink hibiscus flower placed on the left side of her head. Freckles graced her face, a trait inherited by her son.
Her attire included a lengthy, short-sleeved, light blue dress that extended to her feet, along with sandals.
In the anime, her eyes were depicted as brown. In Episode 460 and before her official introduction to the anime, her hair color was portrayed as blonde.
Nothing is known about her abilities. Based on the limited information available, it appears she did not possess any remarkable abilities.
Rouge had a deep and genuine love for Gol D. Roger. Despite the danger and uncertainty surrounding their relationship, she cared deeply for Roger and their unborn child.
She even named their child using a name Roger chose and used Roger's surname for the child. Her love for Roger and their child is evident in the fact that she sacrificed her own life to ensure their child's safety and well-being.
Rouge's love and sacrifice for her child, Portgas D. Ace, are undeniable. She endured a nearly two-year-long pregnancy to keep Ace hidden from the World Government.
Rouge's selflessness led her to give birth to Ace in secret and then pass away shortly after cradling him. Ace grew up cherishing the sacrifice his mother made for him, which is reflected in his use of her surname as a mark of respect and honor.
Despite being on opposing sides as Roger's enemy due to his position in the Marines, Rouge trusted Vice-Admiral Garp to take care of Ace after her death.
Garp's agreement to care for Ace and protect his identity from the Marines is a testament to the respect and admiration he held for Rouge's sacrifice and love for her child.
Apart from the One Piece manga and its anime adaptation, Rouge also appears in One Piece: Pirate Warriors as a non-playable character.
Portgas D. Rouge is the only known character with a recorded date of death, January 1st.
Her name is believed to be linked to the term "Jolly Roger," possibly stemming from "jolie" (French for pretty) and "rouge" (French for red), similar to her lover Roger's name connection.
Ace's name is a reference to the highest card in standard playing cards, while "Rouge et Noir" ("Red and Black" in French) is a name found in various card games.
